I played at a course for my first 18 years where Club Champions are determined by three days of stroke play. That always seemed proper to me but at the course I've played at for the past 11, they conduct their club championship at match play. That seems absurd to me.

I like match play well enough but if you're trying to determine who's playing the best, shouldn't all members of a flight play against each other? At match I may shoot a 75 and be eliminated while another player advances with an 82. The fellow who organizes their club championship over-heard me talking about it at a table with a few other players last year and he really jumped my shit about it and seemed to take my critique personally.

I joined a new private course this year and haven't really looked into their scoring method yet.

How many of you determine the Club Champ at match play? Does anyone else feel that that particular tourney should be played at stroke?

For the first few years, my club did 36 holes of stroke play, but for at least 15 years it has been all match play.  We'll typically do a seeding round in the week or two prior to the actual matches, then have a bracket of 15 players (last year's Champ gets a bye) for the Championship flight.  We still do the Senior Club Championship as 36-holes stroke play.  I think there are good points for each way, but I like the match play format a little better.

We have a separate match play championship, but the club championship is stroke play.

I added the poll for you, @NEhomer, but it's pretty easy to add them yourself.

I think a club championship should be stroke play, and over enough holes to mean something.

Thanks....didn't think of doing a poll.

I agree that 54 holes of stroke play will determine who's playing the best.

Ours is match play, has been that way for ever, you have to play a 36-hole qualifier to get in the Championship bracket.  The best players have typically won the club championship.

Sr. Club Championship is 36-hole stroke play.  I like match play and stroke play events.

I think they do match play becasue it’s a load of fun to watch the finals.  There are usually 20 or more spectators watching the finals.  Not sure there would be that with stroke play.

We have a 36-hole stroke play Presidents Cup in which the winner is automatically in the match play championship.

Our club has multiple events for both Match Play and Stroke Play (36 holes)

In stroke play we have senior and regular which used to be played on separate weekends.
I would compete in both, but last year they switched back to having the competition on one weekend.

In match play, we have individual and 2-man in both senior and regular mens.

Players receive points for the EOY standings for a POY Champion in both.

That's a lot of golf over the season, especially when one advances to the finals.
A few years back I won both senior and regular 2-man and A-Flight stroke championship.

Plus add on Member - Member and the Couples Championship.
I was frazzled with competitive golf that year.
