just oiled up the clubs to play my first nine of the year yesterday.  Over the winter I wached alot of golf on golf tv and alot of it talked about getting a lower handicap.  I never had a handicap my whole life.  When I sauntered into the proshop to see if I had to pay to play, i thought "I am going to ask to get a handicap and how low I can get".  The snake oil salesman behind the counter told me it was going to COST over $40 to get a handicap, or maybe even more AND I had to put in scores! (I thought golf was posed to be fun NOT WORK).  I thought to myself "I never had one before and never had any problems, why would I need one SO bad now".  I let him finish off his sales pitch before I told him, "he buddy, how about I give you $30 and we just forget I asked about the handicap".  Long story short I saved at least $10 and didn't get a handicap, so i don't have to worry about putting in scores.  Love to hear if anyone on here has fellen for this trick.

Decided not to play that day too, because it was pretty dark already.

So you had some free time on your hands, and writing this post is how you used it. Hmmm. I think that says a lot about you. Mostly though, it shows you are not nearly as amusing or clever as you think you are. .

I understand being put off at having to pay to have an official handicap, but how on earth do you think your handicap can be tracked without telling anybody your scores?

Not at all funny, but then again, I've never found any of your drivel to be all that amusing.

So I'm thinking about this, and the OP might actually have touched on something here. If you're the type of golfer who doesn't play in a league, or in tournaments, why would you pay for a handicap service? Even for the league play, it gets sketchy at times. The best run leagues at my club (there are a lot of them, some days up to 4 may be out there) use their own system. One example, using a Stableford format, this league takes the best 3 out of the 5 most recent totals WITHIN THAT LEAGUE. This "self policing" controls sand bagging, people who don't use ESC, don't enter all scores, etc.

If you want to worry about that, start a new topic @GrandStranded, because a @Gilberg topic will never be all that serious (or all that funny).

So you gave him $30 to not play golf and just have a conversation about the club potentially keeping your handicap?:hmm:

Surely your work as an English teacher would provide enough income to cover the $40.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.
