It took me a while, but today, I finally found my groove.

I have yet to take a lesson. I have been watching tons of You Tube videos and reading articles and forums. In particular, I like Mark Crossfield, Golf with Aimee, the lady from More Pars Golf, and Paul Wilson Golf.

Today, a few changes brought me swing in to a groove that worked on every club. Not only that, the contact felt unbelievable good, and ball flight was perfect. And for the first time, I had proper distance gaps between each club. Heck, I was even able to nail my hybrid and my fairway woods!

Although I'm sure everyone is different, this is what did it for me.

1. More shoulder and hip rotation, and less arms.
2. Smoother take-away with better tempo
3. A more neutral grip (I was way to strong, because I had been trying to correct a slice)
4. Remembering to set a bit of lag at the beginning of my downswing
5. Allowing my club head to "swing" instead of trying to push it through with my arms
6. Seeing the arc that my hands are tracing, and bring that arc smoothly all the way around

After about 20 swings, all of them hitting correctly, it just started to happen naturally. I still had a few fat shots, and a few shanks, but with each of them I immediately knew what I had done wrong and made sure to correct it. Out of probably 150 balls, I'd say at least 130 of them felt terrific. I was even jumping around the bag at the end, instead of ending with just the driver. (I usually start with wedges and work my way through the bag up to the driver.)

I finally understand "how" to hit. Now I just have to work that groove into muscle memory, so that I don't have to think about it, and can then start learning how to "shape" my shots when I need to.

Love this game.

Glad it worked out for you. Now all you have to do is keep your swing in repeatable fashion.

The reason the above two posters are cautious for you is because no one has ever mastered golf! You might have it for a little while, but eventually it will float away on you, and you will be left to wonder why?

What fascinates me is your you-tube methodology. I remember when I was looking for some pitching advice and found so many contrary postings. How did you decide who to trust?

I do like Golf with Aimee -short and sweet advice.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

Same way I figured out my own BBQ sauce. Look for the common denominators, and if someone gives contrary advice, see if they have a good explanation as to why. Then experiment.

I fully expect that my next day at the range, I'll be shanking stuff all over the place. But at least now I know what I'm supposed to be doing, and can identify what I did wrong when I screw up.

Without video, you'll have a hard time knowing whether what you're feeling you're doing is even remotely close to what you're actually doing.

Yeah I did that too. I have some old notes about how to pitch, where I wrote down what was common.

@iacas is right about video. I had an instructor who was trying to explain something to me but I could not get it (a matter of a dense skull). I found a YouTube video that showed it to me visually and succinctly, and I copied it on the range. My instructor's eyes confirmed. But even then I needed a video of me doing it to get it from head to heart. So, for me, instruction/YouTube/video can work. Best to all, -Marv

Can't endorse the video point enough.  Sure, there are some things you can pretty much feel correctly with enough experience even without video.  But I can't tell you how many times I've had a day or a week or a couple weeks where one or two new feels worked incredibly and had me feeling like suddenly I was a wildly better golfer.  Then, one day, those feels stop working.  If you're not 100% sure what actual issues those feels were helping you fix, then you have no reliable way to figure out the next feel that keeps those issues fixed (for now).  And you're stuck just bouncing around fixes and feels until you get that magic combo for a while again.

I'd highly recommend taking video next time you're at the range.  Hopefully the stuff that was working for you last time continues to feel great and give better than previous results, so you can record what it is your swing looks like when you're hitting it better and have a reference when new issues crop up.

Paul Wilson by the way I find unbearable. He stares into the camera and talks and talks and talks without any golf action. I just don't get it.

Well I wish he’d be more like that here. @iacas was having what I consider a professional discussion and once Paul was proposed a pretty simple question he bailed. Since then.....silence. Hey, if you’re gonna throw out instruction and charge for your program, you should be more than willing if not eager to defend it.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
