So no one at Fox has noticed the annoying triangle boxes on the top of their coverage screen? Lawd....just awful.......

And why did the golf media think Tiger had a chance of winning? I knew he would implode early.

I too knew he would make a triple on the first after it had happened.

Even with you telling me about it, I can't see it.  You might be imagining it.

Can you link to your prediction?  It's easy enough to say it after a few holes.

GIR for Tiger, finally! :-)

Nice birdie by Dustin.  Keep up the good work.

The fifth is by far the easiest hole today. Getting a shot back will do good.

Dustin is looking good with -2 through 5.

Getting a shot back anywhere will be good :-)

Not that I'm complaining of course.

Not seeing it on the Fox app. I don’t have access to my home cable broadcast at the moment.

This year's US Open so far is awful. The course sucks and so does the coverage on Fox. And has anyone at Fox noticed that the picture has boxes all over the top of the screen?

So I only disagree with 4 things in that comment.

The Open is great - it's fun to watch these guys fight a really tough course.

The course is beautiful and challenging.

The coverage is SO MUCH better than our usual fare:

  • the announcers are easy to tune out when I want, but when I don't
  • they are speaking to what the players are doing rather than stroking their own sad and bitter egos (Miller, Zinger)
  • No petty little snarks about the players or their shots (Miller, Zinger)
  • One guy said DJ is the "Best driver in the world", NOT "best driver of the golf ball in the world"  THANK YOU
  • sometimes they just shut up and let the video speak for itself - THANK YOU
  • I'd like more shot tracer

As for video issues, that's on your end, new TV or restart your computer and give that a try

other than that, we agree

it takes a special kind of asshole to shout inane crap at a tournment, but do they realize they are doubling down as special idiot and a super gross creeper when they yell out the name of the player's wife.  I thought they were done screaming "Paulina" at Dustin - apparently not.

Just like my groups at home.  When someone hits into the thick stuff, everyone is searching.  Nice to see Tiger and Justin helping out.

Another GIR by Tiger.  He might finish with 14/18 GIR.

Nice fourth by Henley at #10 (long putt from well off the green to a few feet).

He was 10 shots worse than the second worst in the field.  That number means nothing.  A typical, not great, score of 75 is what you need to compare against.

I think the whole “An average player would shoot 25 strokes higher than their handicap on a tough tour event” thing is overblown.

300 yard carry and in the fairway.  It's like the Tiger of old, except this time he's in the fairway.

His driver has been really good today, thankfully. That club can quickly ruin a scorecard if it goes off. Remove that triple on the first and this would look like a decent round so far.

300+ yards with what looked like a fairway wood off the #9 tee.  And the shaft looked like he still had the used-bin sticker on it.

No. The U.S. Open celebrity challenges say quite differently.

The best players in the world are not "throwing double bogeys up like they're pars." They're getting an occasional double. And a 10 would make an occasional par.

Do you think it would be fair to assume that a 10 could make at least 1 birdie on the easier holes, and 2-3 pars? We're talking a 10 that shows up, perfectly in form and playing the best they're capable of. I always like these debates because think about a 10 with a mediocre short game. They may duff a chip and be saved by the speed of the green because if they didn't duff it, they would have blown through the green. I think with greens this fast mistakes can be saved, but they can also ruin your game.

Did not know Fowler was using a stand bag. Is it just today or the whole tournament?

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
