2018 Dell Technologies - FedExCup Playoffs

For the second leg of the playoffs we head to Norton, Massachusetts, where the field has now been reduced to the top 100 points leaders in the FedEx Cup. The tournament will play Friday Aug. 31 to Monday Sep. 3 due to Labor Day and there's a 36-hole cut to top 70 players plus ties.

 

Defending champion is Justin Thomas, winner of the FedEx Cup last year and sitting pretty in third at this years FedEx Cup. Rory McIlroy is back on the tee after a break last week. Francesco Molinari has decided to take the week off to rest for the BMW, while Rickie Fowler is unfortunately still missing due to his oblique injury. Tiger Woods will however tee it up again for the third time in four weeks, hoping to play all the FedEx Cup events this year. Bryson DeChambeau rose to the top of the FedEx Cup rankings with his win at The Northern Trust, but has Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau close at his heels.

 

No one will be surprised to see Tiger Woods yet again in the featured groups, where Marc Leishman will once again bask in the glow of the cameras having followed Tiger a few spots down the FedEx Cup rankings at The Northern Trust. The second group for Friday is unsurprisingly the top 3 on the FedEx Cup rankings:

 

Friday: 
Group 1: Marc Leishman (24), Tiger Woods (25), Chez Reavie (26)

Tee times: 8:51 a.m. off No. 10 on Friday; 1:16 p.m. off No. 1 on Saturday.

Group 2: Bryson DeChambeau (1), Dustin Johnson (2), Justin Thomas (3)

Tee times: 9:03 a.m. off No. 10 on Friday; 1:28 p.m. off No. 1 on Saturday.

 

Saturday:

Group 1: Tony Finau (4), Brooks Koepka (5), Justin Rose (6)

 

The second featured group for Saturday will be decided by a voting held on Twitter, choosing between these groups:

Tiger with a mediocre one over first round. The leaders seems to be at -4, so he's not too far off.

 

The good news is he putted better. The bad news is he lost strokes on every other stat. Almost the opposite of The Northern Trust.

 

Northern total SG:

Off the tee: 1.841
Approach: 5.661

Around green: -1.005

Putting: -4.925

Tee to green: 6.496

 

Dell first round SG:

Off the tee: -0.789

Approach: -0.106

Around green: -1.341

Putting: 1.657

Tee to green: -2.233

 

On today's round he said he putted beautifully, but didn't give himself enough looks. Also said "this is a lot of golf right now".

 

He seems to be feeling the weight of playing a lot of golf recently. In an interview before Dell he said:

BMW follows the week after Dell, or actually the same week since Dell has a Monday finish and BMW starts on Thursday. Should he fail to perform this week and drop further down the rankings, he can still get back into the top 30 at BMW.

I've never understood that.  Seems like a no-brainer to have the week off after the Dell, rather than after the BMW, so they get an extra week of rest after the Monday finish, instead of having only three days.  Putting the off week right before the Tour Championship, as they do now, is meaningless for all but 30 players.

I'm even more puzzled why the NFL players don't revolt against having Thursday night games right after a Sunday game, instead of after their bye week.   It's just asking for injuries.

However, the NFL’s injury data does not back up any contention that Thursday games present greater injury risks to players. In fact, the injury rate is lower in Thursday games than it is in Sunday games played a week after the previous game.

DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFL Players Association, mentioned that in January during a meeting with Washington Post reporters and editors.

I think that's the exact idea! Put the pressure on these guys! I bought the Friday paper, fully expecting to see scores from the Dell posted there, only to find none!

I find this much like the PGA placing their championship in a hot house in the middle of August! Test them! Make them work for it!

Yeah but the lucky stuff irks me. Yeah I know...that’s golf. But watching Tiger lip out for birdie to go 65 then Simpson holes out from 25yds for eagle? Damn it.

I know, but I had to reply. On Thursday everybody's still stiff and sore and can't play at full speed. No wonder injuries are down!

Back on topic. Man! Seems like Dechambeau is just on fire right now! Another 63 today after one in the last 3rd round. Seems like the "mad scientist" is onto something!
