I liked Johnny a lot and I will miss him.  When the U.S. Open went to Fox, I really missed him.  I'm sorry that NBC is going with Zinger.  He says one platitude after another and I find him tedious.  I'm a fan of Justin Leonard's skills as an announcer.  And, of course, Tom Weiskopf.  For me, they would have been great picks.  (Feherty isn't available, but he would be my 1st choice.)

Good with me I guess.  I enjoyed Johnny's comments.  Found them interesting, if not a little caustic at times.  But I like Zinger too. I think he will do fine.

At one point Johnny Miller was easily the best color man in golf. But he's gotten lazy in his old age, and his insistence on explaining every poor shot late in a tournament by citing nerves has become tiresome. Azinger is a good replacement.

In a story in the Global Golf Post, Brandel Chamblee said he would have taken Johnny Miller's job in the NBC booth if it was offered. Paul Azinger eventually filled the role. “I like who they hired," Chamblee said. "I think he...

“I like who they hired,” Chamblee said. “I think he was the best choice. I think he was the best man for the job. If they had asked me to do the job, I would have done it. But doing what I do, I think it’s the best gig in golf.”

If what he's doing is the best gig in golf, why would he have done it if they'd asked?

That makes sense. 🙂

I think so.

It makes sense - Johnny can then retire without detracting from the finish of the tournament.

Not a Zinger fan would prefer Frank Nobilo if he is a possible.

Frank Nobilo?! That dude's as dry as dust!

Now that Zinger is in the catbird seat, let's see if his commentary changes at all. Justin Leonard is a snooze, and Weiskopf, while a great course designer, is a whiny, privileged crybaby!

And why wouldn't Feherty be available? He works for NBC just like Miller did. As much as I like him, I don't think he's the guy to shoulder the main load. He's better as a hole commentator and general sideshow.

I think Azinger did a fine job on Sunday. I hardly noticed him, and that’s usually a good trait in a commentator. I’m sure he will be just fine.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
