That's the bottom tweet, but the whole exchange looks a bit more like this:

Brittany Lincicome.png

We've known that professional golfers are often not the most knowledgeable of the Rules, and so this Twitter conversation shouldn't surprise anyone.

This topic exists to share stories of pro golfers and the 2019 Rules. That means we might find ourselves discussing a pro golfer screwing something up, talking about the Rules changes, doing something under the 2018 Rules accidentally, whatever.

Here's another example:

I'll pin the topic for now, as I expect the beginning of the year might see a flurry of activity, while I also suspect it will die down by about March or April.

Though video of pros putting with the flagsticks in at Augusta National or any other major championship will be particularly fun to see…

BTW I recommended to Brittany that she check out RulesGeeks.com. You should as well.

I asked Dave, and he said he was always 95% on the rules, which placed him way, way above the vast majority of his peers.

I believe it!

Of course, maybe I’m expecting too much from someone who doesn’t understand the difference between “to” and “too”, too...  ;-)

Yeah... that one jumped out at me too.  Those mistakes have always seemed so obvious to me, yet for some people

On a different note, I watched the play at Kapalua for a few minutes on Thursday, and say my first example of a pro tapping in without removing the flagstick.  I don't even recall who it was that did it (might have been DeChambeau, I saw him on  a couple of shots), but I have to say that despite knowing the new rule, it still looked odd.

I like DeChambeau's comments about it.  He has apparently been running his own tests, and he agrees with Erik that leaving the stick in the hole is advantageous.  I'll certainly be leaving it in on most of those 3-5 foot knee-knockers where I'd rather have the option of being a bit more aggressive.

DJ played wrong ball from a "hazard" (voice-over: "penalty area"), because he didn't verify that the Taylormade ball he hit was actually his (it wasn't).  Seems he was concerned about moving the ball while identifying it and being penalized for that:

Dustin Johnson shares what happened on the fourth hole during his second round where he was penalized for playing the wrong ball.

Meanwhile, Webb Simpson wasn't penalized for moving his ball while searching for it:

I considered making this a separate topic, and maybe I will if there is enough interest, but for now, this tweet is interesting:

Other possible reasons could involve fatigue, pressure late in the round, the grass growing and/or being in the sun and/or just becoming less "mowed/rolled" throughout the day could have an effect too. But to the other side of things, players further into the round should have a better idea of how the greens are rolling, too.

As far as the fatigue issue...if this was compared to other stats in areas that require much more exertion (driving, approach shots) then maybe we’d see a trend. But that’s difficult as those shots could be affected by weather and course set up more so than with putting. But I think it’s an interesting stat that he’s made.

Spieth, although he talked about the rule and from what he said, knew it, still dropped from the shoulder before corrected.

Woods nearly jarred his tee shot on the par-3 11th hole, setting up what appeared to be an easy birdie attempt from inside of 3 feet. But as he stood over the ball to take his address, it moved slightly, and caused him to back off and summon a rules official.

While Woods did not cause the ball to move, under the new rules he was required to return the ball to its original position and continue on without penalty.

“As I was about to build my stance, the ball moved,” Woods said. “Normally I just play it where it is, but now I had to move it back to where it originally was and then play it from there. That was a little bit different.”

From https://www.golfchannel.com/news/was-little-bit-different-tiger-woods-gets-familiar-new-rules-torrey?utm-tags=golf1304000

I think I heard elsewhere that he had marked and replaced his ball. Otherwise, wouldn’t it be played from the new position? 13.1d(2)

Also, I thought it odd he would use the phrase “build my stance.”

    • I don't think it is concept that is hard to grasp. Most people who complain find an S&D penalty too harsh for a lost ball that is presumably inbound/in a non-penalty area.  I suspect because in other sports, when you loose a point, you loose only THAT point. While that is an apples to oranges comparison, to the casual golfer it's a bit of system shock.
    • I don’t understand why this concept is hard for people. If the ball is lost, it is lost. It doesn’t matter where they think it should be, or whether they feel like it should be lost. The bottom line is they don’t have a ball in play. I play with some people that will just drop with one stroke (if they even take a stroke at all). Frankly, I don’t care since it’s not a competition, but if they go bragging at the bar later that they shot “85” because I will call them out on it every time.
    • I played in Open Qualifying about 25 years ago. I got to the last hole - I shan't share my score, but it wasn't good. It's a long uphill par 4 with the clubhouse just long left of the green. The clubhouse is out of bounds. I hit my second shot left and it got a firm bounce. Get up there and the clubhouse has a patio. Between the patio and a grass is a little channel filled with pebbles. In that channel is my ball. Channel is in play, but hardly ideal. About 8 inches behind my ball also in the channel is a sprinkler head. So I asked an official who happened to be on the patio whether I got relief or not. He had me set up to it and take a backswing. My club hit the sprinkler head (harder than I would have liked). He asked me to do it again (side note - WTF?) and I hit the sprinkler again. He begrudgingly gave me relief and I dropped it on the grass, pitched on the green and missed from about 8 feet. Holing it would have allowed me to break a certain score threshold I'd rather not flirt with. Following year, I played same course, same event and I played a LOT better. I birdied 17 to go back to even par for the day. Friend of mine told me it looked like even was playing off for last spot, but birdie on 18 would get me through (this was local qualifying, so through to final qualifying). I hit my drive in the heather right, went for it from there and pulled it heather left and wound up making double to not be in the play off (which wound up being about 8 people for 2 spots). But I digress - anyway, as I walked off 18 green I walked over to the patio where the scorers were and noticed that they had painted a white line on the grass next to that Channel, so they fixed my issue from the previous year, albeit in a way that would have been much more detrimental to my score.
