i don't know what I'd do in that situation.
I'd probably take the medal starting off and then later give it back.

Fair play to him.

Nash said Wednesday he wouldn't have been able to live with himself if he'd kept the medal from the Aug. 11 tournament. One of Nash's golf mentors, Chris Wood, says many adults would have justified keeping the medal by saying they didn't use the extra club.

It's a sad world we live in and kudos to the kid. Not many kids these days have morals like they. They all feel entitled to everything.

I have to strongly disagree with what you say here. My experience is the complete opposite. I've found kids to be very honest and sincerely interested in doing the right thing. Adults tend to be the problem, especially those with cynical views like this. I've coached youth sports for the last 8 years and have 4 kids of my own. Because of that, I spend a lot of time with kids ranging in age from 7 or 8 to 15 or 16. I'm actually quite impressed with the younger generation. Hopefully they can make it to adulthood without succumbing to this cynicism.

I'm impressed when someone steps up and does the right thing to their own detriment. It's likely that no one would have ever known about the extra club, but he did, and that's what mattered to him. Kudos to him and his parents.

It would be wrong to label all as cheaters as it would to label all as honest beyond reproach. At the club I noticed that women play more by the rules than the men, but not all.One of the women's top players has a reputation for rule bending.

I kinda like the story more after it's been run through the English-Chinese-English translator bots on the web, which is what Google spit out when I looked for it.

MILWAUKEE -- — Zach author was shocked when he unconcealed he had digit likewise whatever sport clubs in his activity a pair hours after success a lowly river PGA tournament. But rules are rules, and the 14-year-old from gray river prefabricated a selection that strength assail whatever people: He disqualified himself and given his medal. “I knew correct absent I couldn’t springy with myself if I kept this medal, so it was pretty instantaneous,” author said during a sound discourse from his activity in metropolis on Wednesday, his prototypal period of broad school. Nash effort a 77 to get the boys 13-14 geezerhood sectionalization at the metropolis County Parks Tour Invitational, which is separate by the river PGA Section, on Aug. 11. He vex 31 added players in his division, every patch his grandparents from Chiwere were watching. After his victory, author went to the Rivermoor Golf Club – where he played 36 holes nearly every period this season – to training more and speech to digit of his mentors, Chris Wood, the club’s nous sport professional. “I was display everybody my ribbon and then Chris and I went and we were having a salt and he said ‘Hey, whose edifice is this? And I said ‘my friend’s.’ And he said ‘This makes 15.’ I was in damper after that,” author said. The penalisation for breaking the rule, titled conception 4-4, is digit strokes for apiece mess played with more than 14 clubs, with a peak of quaternary penalisation strokes. But since he didn’t attending his player edifice during the tournament, a penalisation wasn’t added. That meant he subscribed an inaccurate scorecard, which he knew disqualified him. Nash said sport prides itself on herb and players occupation penalties on themselves. While the selection was clear, he said he couldn’t support but scream a taste in face of Wood. Wood had to call Nash’s father, Bob, to garner him up. Later that night, author titled Andy Landenberger, lowly journeying administrator for the WPGA, to vindicate what happened. He dispatched backwards the medal, which Landenberger said he would inform to runner-up European Reinhardt, who effort an 80. Nash, who has been golfing for most threesome years, said a someone spent the period at his concern before the competition and mitt a 5-wood club, and he place it in his activity not realizing it prefabricated a amount of 15. Wood said author prefabricated him and the edifice proud. “I conceive most grouping – not meet kids – would hit proven to reassert in their nous having the player clubs in their activity and not using them as an defence to not call and alter themselves,” Wood said. Nash’s ascendant said his son is a lawful teenager – he talks backwards to his parents, picks on his brothers – and was a taste astonied the teenager didn’t consider, meet for a moment, ownership the nonachievement to himself. But he said he did the correct abstract and he and his spouse were proud. “When I prototypal heard it, when he told me the full story, I thought, ‘Wow, you are doing the correct thing,’” Bob author said. “You hit to ready doing what’s right. But in the backwards of my mind, I’m intellection ‘If you didn’t feature anything the stagnant wouldn’t change.’” The boy’s open accomplishment was prototypal reportable by the metropolis Journal Sentinel. Nash started his underclassman assemblage weekday at metropolis Union High School and plans to go discover for the sport team. He played in added competition on weekday – and counted his clubs threesome times. The faux pas has prefabricated him a meliorate golfer, he said. “It category of got me to be more alive of every the rules, especially 4-4,” he said.

Stretch.

Are you listening, LPGA?

If the kid had a big fat check to go along with his medal, I bet he'd think twice...

Good on the kid. If his win is any indication of his future career, this won't be his last win but hopefully first of many.

I applaud him for doing the correct thing and I'd like to believe he would have done it even if he was alone at home when the error was 'discovered'.

After his victory, Nash went to the Rivermoor Golf Club — where he played 36 holes nearly every day this summer — to practice more and talk to one of his mentors, Chris Wood, the club's head golf professional. "I was showing everybody my medal and then Chris and I went and we were having a soda and he said 'Hey, whose club is this? And I said 'my friend's.' And he said 'This makes 15.' I was in shock after that," Nash said.

Apparently the rule say that the standings shouldn't be changed ...?

I was wondering about just that issue. Depending on the timing, I think the article is right: it's admirable of him to admit the error, but if the outcome was announced, it should stand according to my understanding of the rules.

how do you not realize an unfamiliar club in your bag? His friend's 5 wood was sitting in the bag the entire round? Find that kind of odd.

You don't. He had no option when his error was exposed. I'm guessing that he actually didn't know the rule and when his situation was made clear to him, he knew he had no option but to do the right thing. Remember, the story didn't say that he got home and noticed the extra club. Someone else noticed it.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

    • Lemme guess….’ We don’t want any confrontation so nobody says anything.’ Sheesh…..Call him out and fix the problem.
    • Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.
    • Yeah, this isn't sandbagging. It's outright cheating. He should be banned.
    • That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
    • This is the part I don’t get. He’s not even kind of sandbagging, he’s blatantly doing it and submitting scores that are verified to be incorrect. How he’s not banned from competition is beyond me.
