  1. 1. Who's Masters Shot was Better from the Pine Straw?

    • Phil 4th Round 13th Hole, 2nd Shot, 2010 Masters
      31
    • Bubba 2nd Playoff Hole, 10th Hole, 2nd Shot, 2012 Masters
      62

Bubba for sure.  Phil had a pretty straight shot into the green that he could see.  Bubba had to hook it about 40 yards to a hidden green from where he was standing.  Plus Bubba was in sudden death to add more pressure.

But Phil had much less margin for error. He cleared the creek by a yard or two. Bubba's shot could have landed almost anywhere that let him get up and down.

On the flip side, Phil's shot was simply a stock 6-iron. The trees weren't actually a factor, nor did he have to do anything to curve the ball. He was almost certainly playing the ball to go up the slope behind the hole location at 13 and come back - that's the way most people will play that shot - and just happened to hit it short of his target.

I voted, but I won't say which way, because really I think both are pretty much equal. If one of them had made the putt (though obviously Bubba knew he didn't have to) it might have helped, IMO.

I gave it to bubba simply because his shot was to win the tournament.

What made Phil's shot difficult was he had to make sure he cleared the creek from where he was, but was still a fairly straight shot. Bubba's was difficult because to hit a 40 yard hook and to hit it that close to the hole is amazing. In my opinion, Bubba's had less room for error, which is why I voted his shot.

Both of these guys are "go for broke" type players. Each had probably a safer play - par 5 for Phil where he could have just pitched it closer and use his wedge game to get it closer for a birdie and Bubba knew Louis came up short of the green so he could have just pitched it out as well.

Best Regards,
Ryan

I think the blind shot gives a slight edge to Bubba.  Both required incredible control and accuracy, but not being able to see your landing spot made Bubba's more of a "Wow" for me.

Both are incredible. I voted for Phil just because he had a tree in front of him, more distance, and the creek to clear. A few have noted that Bubba's was for the win, but Phil's was midway thru the back 9 of the final round. That's an awfully risky time to be attempting a shot from the pine straw over the creek like that. I'll admit, I thought Phil made the putt, but I guess I was mistaken. Either way, I was blown away by Bubba's big hook. Awesome finish to the Super Bowl of golf haha

Bubba Watson's shot was incredible because of when he did it. It was an amazing shot, but not that difficult for him.

What made it so exciting was that you pretty much thought that he was finished and that there was so much drama.

When you look at where he was in Google earth, you can see that he was lucky tio have a clear shot, but that it was very doable for him.

The thing that impressed my more was his driving on 18 in regulation on Sunday and in the playoff.

I had been saying to friends all week that if Watson was leading on Sunday I just couldn't see him hitting that shot anywhere but left. I was wrong.

Phil's was amazing because he had to make himself not think about the tree. Again, incredibly dramatic.

I truly can't see a need to compare them. Under the circumsatnces, both as good as could be hoped for and great theatre for the viewers.

There is a lot to be compared, if you feel the need to compare them.

If there was "no comparison" the votes would be 100% in Phil's favour.

And the fact that Phil's was essentially a dead straight shot with nothing in fron of him........... for him, just the same as a regulation a 6 iron from the fairway. TV made it look harder than it was. An amazing shot, nonetheless.

This could just be me, but it seemed like the pine straw that Phil was in was in better shape. So there's that.

Interesting point, no "patrons" walking around where Phil was

Sorry, but it's Bubba's for me.  As has been pointed out, Phil's was essentially a straight six iron.  Yes, it was over water, but was also pointed out, he had a backstop built in so he could rip it and let the slope bring anything long back to the hole.

Bubba's shot was 150 yards plus, with a 52 degree wedge with 40 yards of hook on it to a green that repels errant shots.

No comparison, Phil's.

Absolutely agree. Forget trees on Phil's shot, just consider the distance and that he had to clear the ravine. Bubba's was with a 52 degree wedge. Yes it had to hook but that seems to be Bubba's specialty.
