Share any awkward stories you may have about having to play in a group of people you don't know as a single golfer for the day.

Last night:

There is a little night-time par 3 course about 20 minutes from home I like to play.  My normal friend I go with couldn't make it, and given any privelage of going to play when you're a parent is taken!

I get put with 2 other guys by the starter.  Round goes fairly smooth till hole #X where we finally had to wait for slow play.  Before that, they seemed to be pretty normal folks, of similar skill level, easy to talk to.

We get to talking about other places we've played rounds or different kinds of play (match, alternate shot, superball).  We were joking around so I mentioned the stupid rule some kids play while in school called "dickies".

90% of my friends that play golf know what dickies are, and if you don't know and you've played golf long enough to break 100 then you must live under a rock.

After mentioning it, the guy goes off on a homophobic tangent about all-boys schools, dicks, and the gay marriage ammendment in our state.

That really made playing the last hole awkward as hell.  Greaaaaat, I am playing with a homophobe that now thinks I'm a creep.

I told the story to my friends at work I've played golf with and ALL of them knew what dickies were.  Oh well.

If you don't hit your tee shot past the ladies tee, then you have to finish the rest of the hole with your.... out.

I was once paired with a racist old man that made the last FIVE holes of the front 9 uncomfortable as all heck.  Another guy we paired up with and I were talking about some basketball player and how amazing he was and this old guy pipes in talking about how slavery bred them to be better athletes and how he can't stand to watch black people play basketball and how they ruined a game invented by a white guy for white people and so on and so on....I was blown away.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

Yeah, I've never  been more embarassed on a golf course.  Assuming they would get the joke/fun given some of the junk they were joking about seemed a sure thing.

Hence the risk in assuming anything.

Golf, especially public golf, is a microcosm of society.  As such, the people you might be paired with will have opinions that may or may not be the same as yours.  I suppose you could make value judgements (are all people opposed to a gay marriage amendment homophobes?) about everyone you play with. Or you could look at it as an opportunity to meet and converse with people you normally wouldn't.

Whether you agree with them or not (obviously you didn't), you have the opportunity to hear different sides of things.  Kind of like a golf forum.

I've heard of that "rule", but never heard it called 'dickies'. May be a regional thing.

I remember a round a long time ago where I got paired up with a husband and wife team that were in the midst of a day-long fight. They were constantly berating each other, and he told her to shut up a bunch of times. It was quite uncomfortable, and screwed up my game. I'm always embarassed by couples that fight in public..

Knights Play, 27 hole par 3 course with a huge range.

Looking at your username, you have a sport bike?  R1 or R6?  I'm used to people calling a GSX-R a Gixxer around here.

In all fairness...

I've never really had any awkward situations.  I've had a couple of annoying advice givers, but nothing out of the ordinary.  On the contrary, most of the people I've gotten paired with were quite pleasant and enjoyable.

Dickies?  does anyone actually do this?  I thought i was just a joke to make fun of poor tee shots...   If I was golfing and someone actually attempted to play out a hole with their junk out I would run them over with the cart.

The most awkward time was when I was a kid (sometime between when I was 13 & 15) playing with an older ladies set of clubs, and with the really small driver heads, I could still hit the ball 250 or so.  When I played with other people besides my dad, I guess some liked the fact that I had distance with an old driver and they asked if I'd like to try their driver.  At that time I was always happy to do that, so I went away and hit a ball.... only I broke the head off the driver after impact.  So my dad had to pay to get his shaft replaced. After that point, I never used another guys clubs, unless it was family.

It wasn't as a single but it was kind of akward.  When we first started to play, my girlfriend (now my wife) and I went down to the local muni to play 9 holes after work.  We had never really played before so we didn't even realize we could be paired up with a stranger . .we were hoping to play just the 2 of us since we really had no idea what we were doing.  We'd been to the range a few times but that was it.  So anyway we get paired up with this older guy who seems like a pretty nice guy as we chatted a bit while waiting to tee off.

So he tees off and hits a pretty good one.  Then we get up there and both hit terrible drives.  Now, before we teed off I told this guy that we were new to golf and weren't really going to play by the rules - we were going to be giving ourselves plenty of free drops, etc, etc.

But as we were walking to the first green - he out to his tee shot and us advancing our balls manually (in our pockets) he starts going on about how we have no business at this course.  That its a really hard course for good golfers only and we shouldn't even be out here.  I sort of reiterated that we were just learning and were just going to walk along and take shots and thats why we came out in the evening, etc.   I didn't tell him this but we also picked the cheapest, shortest muni out there so it most definitely was not Bethpage Black or anything.

So the 9 holes went pretty much like that - with him making goofy comments about 'real golfers', suggesting that we take lessons at Golf Tec and us pretty much ignoring him and being polite.  We kept pace of play - it was a crowded muni so we were up on the people in front of us the whole time anyway.  THen at the turn he takes off like he just stole something from us . .apparently trying to ditch us at the turn.  As we told him, we were only playing 9 holes anyway.

Other than that I've had really good experiences being paired up but that was really uncomfortable.

I'd have told that guy to stick it.  Good players know that playing cheap munis with less than a 4some means they will likely be paired up with a hack/newbie or two.  What an ahole.  I'd have probably told him to play on by himself and let him know why.

A friend and I got paired with another 2some at a public course not long ago and both of them said the get out quite bit. We get to hole 4 and we are almost 2 holes behind neither one of them has made less than a 10 on any hole. At 16 tee the one guy swings and misses 3 times so we finish the hole and I had to ask how they got any enjoyment out of playing golf especially if they play quite a bit. I understand people have bad days but neither of these guys broke 150 and I just don't see how it could be fun for them. So I guess I was that guy...

At that point I would have said 'Why don't you go ahead of us. We don't want to slow you down.'

What I would be thinking is, 'Why don't you pack sand up your ass sideways with a crowbar.'
