I said there that I'd start this thread later today - so here it is.

I'd like everyone to pledge in this thread to introduce one new golfer to the game of golf.

And as you can imagine, I don't just mean "introduce them and then leave them to fend for themselves." I mean do whatever it takes to introduce at least one person to the game of golf, and get them to the point where they are hooked and are going out and playing on their own.

I think everyone here should pledge to essentially "create a golfer." It can be a badly relapsed golfer (i.e. someone who played ten years ago but hasn't played since, or something), a brand new golfer, someone who only plays once a year in your corporate scramble, something.

The golf course is a scary place for a lot of people, particularly adults. It can be an expensive game. Let's give them (or at least loan them) old equipment. Let's help them with the basics. Let's get them out to executive courses, teach them the basic etiquette of the sport, and show them just how fun it can be to whack a ball in a gopher hole outside for a few hours.

I'll start that thread later today.

I love this idea, it would be great too if folks could share "success stories" and suggestions for how to get new people introduced to the game. I have a friend who I'd love to get out there, but he's in his mid 40's (like me) and is extremely self conscious about embarrassing himself out there. I'm sure he'd have no problem going out and whacking away at the driving range but I'm the last person who should be giving a beginner swing instructions (and I doubt he'll go get lessons until he gets "the bug" first).

This thread will serve as a place for people to both commit to the process, and to share ideas with others, and to share updates on their progress.

I've created three badges.

You can get the first when you sign up.

You can get the second when you've identified your "target" and have begun the process of introducing them to golf.

You can get the third when you feel you've "created a golfer." You will be the grand poobah of this project at that time, and then… you get to start all over again in 2015. :D

This is a call to action. I'm going to have Mike push this pretty hard, and I'll be doing my part as well, and we're going to make a dent in the universe, so to speak. Let's all do our role.

I already started to bring one of my friend in the world of golf.....

I knew he was somewhat interested in the game since he was asking me what I played when he knew I was going to play golf last summer.

Right after the holidays, I was booking some lessons for late january and I was able to convince him to come and take the same lessons. He found a used golf bag on internet (I am lefty so I can't lend him any clubs) and he signed up for lessons. He took one so far and loved it! We are going for the second one on Monday.

So does that count since I started the process in 2014 or do I have to find another future golfer?

It's up to you. I've given you the Level 1 badge for now. If you can get another… that'd be for the best.

Sigh, I've got a buddy who used to play a fair bit back in the day and I have been trying to get him back in for 2 years now. He talks a good game but never actually comes to the course. I'll keep working on him though.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

    • I have been on a roll in November. Today was a 77 (69.2/115, 6,050 yards) on a wet course with dew covered bumpy greens. Better greens and I might have shaved a few more strokes off the score.
    • So, it appears to me that everyone is bringing out some version of the zero-torque, or square to square, or torque balanced, putter.  What ever name you want to give it seems like everyone has one of these types of things in their line up now.  It reminds me of about 10 years ago, when everyone had to have a counter-balanced putter in their line-up.  Callaway Media | Videos, Podcasts, & Episodes | Golf Content The Official source for Callaway golf clubs, golf balls and gear.
