He really hasn't chased distance. He's been at roughly 290-295 yards in driving distance his entire time on Tour.

This.

I know, too.

Spieth isn’t struggling because he’s having to hit 6i into the green when his competitors are hitting 8-9i. His ball striking and putting just hasn’t been good especially on the weekends. It’s gotta be frustrating. I think, and this may be wrong, but he’s been saying ‘ it’s coming around’ for many months now....I don’t see it.

At least 11 months 😭. He was on NLU podcast last spring saying that. Anyways.... it’s still Friday, he’s only +5...nah I’ve moved passed denial early this week.

Next stage of grief is anger. What the hell was that iron shot yesterday that found the middle of the water!?

That was the first time I really thought like...maybe he won’t be a super star again.

But where are these awful shots coming from?! Does anyone have an opinion of why these shots are happening? Like is his swing degrading?

He hit a shot on a par 3 with a pond on the right of the green, and hit it so far right, he almost missed the pond. As a 4 handicap, it would have been a terrible shot for me, let alone a guy on Tour. I know those guys hit bad shots, but with an iron, teed up, and it wasn't a shank, I couldn't believe he missed so badly. The announcer really didn't know what to say. I'm not good enough to say what he needs to do to get back to playing well, but it seems that what ever he's doing now isn't working. He seems like a good guy, and I'd like to see him return to form.

I agree and have said in the past...I really wish he’d just go see a new instructor. I know instructors can tell me it’s not the instructor...fine I get that, but when it’s this off ya gotta start exploring all you can. Call it a mental reboot or whatever. I wish he’d go see George Gankas. Plenty of top players change coaches. I hope he’s not feeling sappy emotions for McCormick. Whatever he’s ‘working on’ isn’t working.

Just curious as to why him for Jordan?

The videos I’ve watched with him working with the young guys...I think he’s got a demeanor that would get through to him. I like how he communicates. Let’s face it, Spieth is a bit of a pansy. And although I’ve conceded McCormick is a knowledgeable guy...he’s a pansy too. Spieth needs boot camp, not a head tassel and a ‘ you’ll get it back sport!’ attitude.

Lol. Well I expected a much more scathing response from you with that. But that’ll do.

How much longer are his exemptions from his majors good for status on tour?

Winning The British Open gives you a 5 year exemption to like everything. So through 2022?

Plus forever at Masters and until he’s 60 at British Open since he won them.

Im sure he gets something for his top 3 at the PGA last year, but my answer is prob close enough

When I look at Spieth I can't help but think of David Duval.  For that reason, who knows if Jordan comes back.

I did find this article from a couple of years ago...

John

This is exactly what I mean when I say that if you're at the top of your game, just keep doing what you're doing and don't listen to anyone about changing anything.  And for heaven's sakes, don't chase after getting more distance if you're winning a lot.

What did Jordan try to change?

He just started hitting the ball more poorly than his other-worldly form of 2015-2017.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
