I checked in behind a retired, walking single yesterday...

... on a course that's not very 'walker friendly'.  He was exiting the shop as I was walking in.  The woman behind the counter told me it was cart path only (to be expected with the weather leading up to yesterday) and that the guy I had just passed was going to be walking the course.  She suggested I get my stuff, get to the tee and head out before him.

Well... by the time I got my bag on a cart, gathered my pitch mark repair tool, ball marker, tees and balls then drove to the first tee... this guy was already up on the first green.  I didn't see him again until I got to the 4th tee and he was just leaving the green (par 3).  He did not hold me up at all until the 17th hole when he was in the fairway waiting for the grounds crew to finish up near the green.

Some of the walks between holes at this course are near 1000 yards with no way to cheat it and walk a straight line.  Riding the path between a few holes takes 45 seconds to a full minute.  This guy was blistering!

Managed to play the round in just over 2-1/2 hours.  I would have been happy with that time, on this course in cart path only conditions if there was nobody in front of me.  I was amazed at how quickly this guy moved.  When I finished up, I popped into the clubhouse to see if he was around.  I wanted to offer to buy him a beer but... he tossed his sticks in his trunk and off he went.

Now granted... I'm not in any form of shape, but truthfully... if I had walked that course (even playing as a single)...  think it would have taken me a full 4 hours.  Chances are, it may have taken me longer because I'd have needed to stop and rest somewhere along the way.  I was impressed by this guy.

Maybe he's one of those speed golf guys?

5 mph is considered to be a fast walking pace.  Every "1,000 yard" stroll  (0.57 miles) would take at least 10-12 minutes.  You are right, this gentleman can really hoof it.

If he’s walking 5 mph he’s covering one mile in 12 minutes, and .57 miles in 7.  A more likely sustained pace is 3 mph though.

But, assuming a standard golf cart, doing about 15mph max, a minute run between the long holes is only about 440 yards, not 1,000.  He can walk that in 3 minutes at 5 mph, or in 5 minutes at a comfortable 3 mph.  Still moving right along, but very doable...

Sad part is he's also likely to be the asshole in the BMW that's doing stupid shit every morning on the way to work.

HOWEVER, I'd be happy to see him in the group in front of me on the course too.....

(My apologies to those whose clubs have a lot of BMWs and Audi's in the parking lot.  Not for the comment, just for your club)

If he is a retired gent he is probably not driving his BMW to work every morning.

Obviously she didn't know much about that guy.  Or she would have said for you to grab some ham & eggs in the grill room 'cause there's no way you'll ever catch him.  I have a reputation at my course that when I go off the tee, if I'm not playing with friends, you'll never catch me.  I use a push cart, run off the 1st tee and run half the course.  If other golfers look at my tracks in the early morning dew they must think I'm a sasquatch, with the 5 foot strides.

Last year I thought I was going to be the first off of the tee early one week day.   I arrived and was told there were two older ladies that were first but I'd never catch them.   I only saw them twice and I finished in 2:15.     Sometimes, age doesn't play a factor in the speed of a round.   Playing ready golf is what it's all about.

The problem is that some people are never ready. It doesn't matter if you wait for no one but you take 2 minutes on every shot a la dechambeau/holmes. People see that on tv and think its ok.

Nice article. I hope to be the retired walker one day soon.  I have the retired part, got rid of the money pit BMW, now have to work on the walking part.

I like your course.  Most courses I play, every tee time before twilight times is filled with a foursome.  And the better twilight times are filled up also.

FYI, Torrey Pines, Coronado, Encinitas Ranch, The Vineyard are the full courses I mostly play.  Not true for the executive Tecolote course though, just the morning times are pretty filled up which is whne I play.

    • It's been a little more than a year since I can last remember hitting golf balls and today I just got my second cortisone injection in 11 months. I thought maybe shortly after the first injection I was going to be able to start playing again with therapy but the pain while doing my backswing past halfway just didn't subside like just lifting my hands up in the air did. So today the Orthopedic surgeon put more in the backside of the shoulder than before to address the tendon more. I'm going to try therapy for another 3 months and if I  can't swing the club without pain then I think surgery is going to be my next option.
    • I was just down visiting family in southern California and we played a couple rounds of golf. I hit my ball into the deep rough near some tree's and my cousin's husband offered me his Sim 2 Rescue Hybrid to try out. And I felt the same way, wow! I loved it, it also had a Pure DTX grip on it which I loved. As soon as I got back home, I ended up buying two used Calloway Rogue X hybrids, 3 and 5. So far I've only tested them out at the range, but I love them. They're much more forgiving than irons for me.
