Sand Shank… What Did He Do Wrong?

Even the announcer says something about being "almost bladed". If you look up shank in a golf dictionary, this shot would be the literal farthest distance from it. A cleanly struck ball is closer to a shank than this is.

The shot is almost the opposite of a shank.

A couple days ago, when the pro golfer was putting and the kid in the gallery shouted during his stroke... the reporter who pushed out the story called his 1 inch miss from 6-7 feet a shank.

Not that it's a 3rd World issue, but how can you say that with such surety?!  Do you have super slo-mo video footage to prove it?  Did you talk with the player or the caddie?  Have you ever hit a shot off the toe of your club?  Looks and feels like a shank but it isn't.

A shot off the toe does NOT feel like a shank, and a 2.9 would know that.

It all goes so fast and looks the same.  And in the sand I'd say it virtually feels the same.   Out of the sand I've never hit that shot.  Though I've had a few hosel rockets.

Disagree, I know what a "toe shank" feels like from a bunker because I used to miss them like that. Doesn't feel anything like a hosel shank which I struggled with for an entire year several years ago. 

Definitely looks like a hosel rocket IMO based off the ball velocity and the placement of his strike in the sand.

Dude it was a shank, El Hosel, the laterals, hosel rocket. Not sure why you seem to think you are 100% correct, because the player is the only guy who knows for sure. I've done that several times before, open the face, try and pop it out and crack... hello Mr. Hosel.

I am not 100% correct but I'm sticking to 41% of the golf ball making contact with the toe at the club.

I agree except the hosel getting farther part- you're much closer.  Though much less likely for hosel contact to send the ball to the right (that why I'd agree with it being a toe or bladed contact, not hosel)

I agree.  Nice diagrams.  Actually, when I hit a sand shot (sand wedge greenside) I line up the hosel with the ball before I pull the club back, knowing I'm going to cut across it and eventually catch the ball in the center of the face area, with a layer of sand between ball and face.

I love playing sand shots... strong point of my game (though I do try to stay out of those pesky bunkers).  Can't tell you how many times in a scramble I lobby for the ball in the trap over the ball in the rough 15 yards from the green.  I am always overruled; nobody seems to like to play sand shots.

My power point fu is strong in child like pictures

My sand game is good if I practice, sucks otherwise.  But in scrambles I've been in the same boat.  Usually a better lie.

Yep, but virtually all scramble players run from a sand trap like running from Godzilla.  Where's their courage?!

My philosophy is that one of the four of us will hit a good one.

The last time I convinced my group to play out of the sand, it was because it was much shorter, and we were hitting up toward the pin, whereas the fairway shot was longer, but, mostly because the green was steeply falling away from that angle.

One of the fours of us did hit a good shot, but not me.
