Snell and Vice are both good direct to buyer options, coming in under 30 bucks a dozen when you buy 5 or more dozen, with performance and feel similar to the big dogs (ProV, Calaway, TP5 etc.).

For the future, there is a separate section of the forum dedicated to equipment, which a club section and an accessory section where balls would fall under. A mod may move this, so if you can't find it, that's where it went.

Thanks. I’m new to this, so I appreciate the tip.

No prob. Always good to have someone new, and I only found this site last year. Welcome, and I hope you find it well here. Plenty of information and some great conversation.

I assume you have strong swing speed to use the x?

I have used other brands in the past. I like Titleist durability. I could also get some weird change in iron distance with some high spin balls.

I have never had to worry about sucking my irons and wedges off of greens. (I don’t smash 9 irons 110%, that’s goofy.) I’ve historically hit my irons a tad low.

The X goes higher and spins a tad more with irons. That is fine with me. I see most difference in mid irons.

I have a frugal friend in LA who buys Titleist X- out practice balls and uses them on the course.

The x outs aren’t legal for tournament play, but the practice balls are. The x outs DO have potential for performance issues, unlike the practice balls.

But I get it.

Interesting.  I think my friend has more performance issues himself than the golf balls he uses. Doesn't play in tournaments.

I guess things changed over time. Originally, the x was supposed to feel harder, launch higher and spin less and it was suggested it was for swings in excess of 110 mph. I remember announcers talked about it with Greg Norman, who switched because he was backing up the Pro V’s off of greens they were spinning so much, while the x came in high and stopped.

The recommendation had more to do with the decrease in spin. The V1x originally was the slightly firmer ball, so it always had higher ball speeds… it just might not have performed the best given the spin characteristics.

What does this have to do with anything?  We're not talking about a 80g xxx stiff shaft and a head 4* of loft here.  Read up on what the golf ball offers; it's not about swing speed.

No.  It's about flight preference.  A harder ball gives you more ball speed.  Who doesn't want that?  Nowadays, both the v and the x are very similar in terms of ball speed, but spin and feel are a little different.  Nonetheless, the idea that swing speed determines the ball is nonsense.  It's about achieving the launch characteristics that fit what you want.  A slower speed player with higher spin loft can benefit from the reduction in spin.  Also, a faster speed player with lower spin loft may want a spinnier ball (Tiger's ball is VERY spinny).

It's about the individual, not some overbroad generalization.

I either go Bridgestone e6 or Volvik vivid orange. I will also use any of the Marvel Volviks if I’m swinging well lol. I haven’t bought any of the TP5s yet but want to try them.

For me many different balls ...I seem to change every so often ..had a period where I only played Bridgestone e6 ....then tired Wilson duo and had some great rounds so kept playing them for club comps .... when I practice play I hit many different balls sometimes I'll play 9 holes tee off with 2-3 different balls ...great way to compare balls

After losing many Doz Golf balls at Natadola Fiji hard GC... I have just purchased 50x Taylormade tour preferred x balls ...might try and only play these for the next several months (once out of lockdown)

Sounds good. I hope we get to play before summer. Everything is closed until May 5 and probably longer if numbers keep going up.

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
