Unless it's without spectators at all, really, that seems like it might be a little aggressive/early.

But hey, hopefully it's "safe" enough to do it then.

June 11th?  Hopefully, it will have no fans or limited number of fans.

This social distancing will likely a good idea until vaccine is developed.

That's August or September, 2021 at the earliest.

Germany, who seems to be handling this better than anywhere else in the Western world, announced that there will be no sporting events with fans until August 31. I assume the PGA Tour is planning no fans for a while, but I doubt any events with fans are happening in the next couple of months.

Peter Kostis also made a good point on twitter (sorry, can't link right now) that you can't broadcast a tournament, even without fans, and practice social distancing. Even a tournament that is only players, caddies, support staff, and broadcasters is going to involve a couple of hundred, maybe even a thousand, people on the course.

All this is to say, even though mid-June is a long time from now, it still seems a bit ambitious to me.

The people can stay away from each other. The biggest breach will be that they'll be touching the same things, but they can certainly stay away from each other in almost any situation.

We're all eager to see sports on TV, especially golf.  If it's at the expense of people's health, I can continue to play online golf, practice Erik's generous lessons and watch too much TV.

It seems theoretically possible, but it's going to be hard in practice. It will require the PGA Tour to think through things - not necessarily its strong suit - and the players to obey the guidelines. But players are still going to have to travel, stay in hotels, etc.

Edit to add - broadcasting and the infrastructure with that are probably the hardest part. You can keep commentators away, but you still need cameras, cables for the cables, people to put together the towers, etc.

No fans for the first 4 events:

We appear to be getting closer to seeing the best golfers in the world return to action

No way they could possibly do this with fans, so that makes sense.

June 11th? Well, I just hope the virus is well contained by then. Galleries, or no galleries, there's probably going to be more folks involved than just the golfers.

For sure. But wouldn’t it be cool to see a really minimalist telecast? Like some of the vlogs? Just sounds of the pro, his caddie, the strike, background nature. Even then, there’d be a lot of support involved.

No way it will be contained. Once there’s a treatment for those who get it, life will go back to normal. But until then, it’s going to be a social distanced world with very few fans allowed into sporting events and athletes tested daily.

I don't think there really is a possibility of this either... I believe it's vaccine or nothing.  This type of virus there is no "treatment".  Just managing the symptoms and let your body try to fight it.  I think we're incredibly fortunate as it is that *most* people should make it through this ok.  Personally, doesn't make me any less terrified of getting it, even as someone who is young (mid 30's) and otherwise healthy.

You have a different definition of "treatment" than most people.

If you can reduce symptoms, lower the mortality rate, etc. then that's a "treatment" in my book. If, with "treatment," this becomes about the same as influenza, then…

I think you’re confusing ‘treatment’ with ‘cure.’

Heard about Brooks points about possibly more lost balls on a tv segment. I never thought a lost ball problem would happen with no fans but I've been curious to see it. Maybe 1 or 2 per weekend if the 3 minute search is enforced?

    • As a geezer who remembers seeing the original Star Wars in theaters - this sim is pretty kewl.  Fantastic detail!
    • Day 203 (21 Nov 24) - Weekly nine hole round with my good friend.  Played it as a 7 club challenge (7w, 5h, 7i, 9i, GW, LW, putter).  As we were playing up a set of tees, no super loss of distance off the tee.  Had some good looks at birdie, failed to convert.  These sessions with fewer clubs really helps with course management.
    • Tell me about it - shouldn’t have second guessed…
    • My wife is going to drag me to see Wicked.   She is very excited to see it.   We saw the musical while in Chicago and thought it was very good.  I'm not usually a fan of musicals but I'm looking forward to seeing this.   Gladiator 2 does look good.   I'm going to go back and watch the original Gladiator before going to the theater.
    • MSN Glover expressed his dissatisfaction with what he termed as 'cool kid meetings' between Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Tiger Woods and other high-profile golfers. "I think it's terrible," he stated. "And then hiding behind pace of play, I think, challenges our intelligence. They think we're stupid.     "Don't cut fields because it's a pace of play issue. Tell us to play faster, or just say you're trying to appease six guys and make them happy so they don't go somewhere else and play golf." Fitzpatrick joined the conversation on X (formerly Twitter), with the 30-year-old echoing Glover's sentiments regarding the PGA Tour changes. "He's so right," Fitzpatrick posted. "Pathetic that pace of play is spoken about every year and nothing ever gets done."     I agree. Instead of  penalizing  players for  turtle  play they appease the  slow jerks  by  cutting the  fields. They will play even slower  knowing they will NEVER be  penalized.
