  1. 1. Do you have a problem or dislike Justin Thomas (or anyone else, really) cursing on TV while playing golf?

I voted yes because it was not cursing. They get fined for that on tour. He used an unacceptable, derogatory pejorative for gay people and he needs to banish that word from his vocabulary. I don't think he even understood that it is offensive but it is no different from the "n" word to some. He strikes me as a smart, empathetic person and will use this moment and his platform on the Tour to promote inclusion.

I'm pretty sure he knew it was offensive, hence the immediate apology.

Why it was so readily available, I don't know, though.

I'm not sure if I've responded to this poll or not and the thread title has changed enough that it's lost me. But, in any event, I am sure I've said this before - either here or in another thread - (stepping back onto the soapbox) I think pro golfers in televised events should exercise control over their behavior whether it applies to cursing or slamming their clubs into the ground or any other example of inappropriate childish response to frustrating circumstances. They should have learned how to behave properly in public from their parents but, if that didn't happen they should learn it now.

FWIW, I usually just say my own name in exasperation. I do swear, but not in that kind of situation where I’m mad or disappointed in myself. For JT, it says a lot that he uses that word.

I do say, “Mother Puss Bucket!” on occasion.

Where I come form we use a lot of rhyming slang;

Irish Jig - Wig

Bob Hope - Dope

etc.

there is a shoe shop in the city called Bayne & Duckett, comes in handy after a poor shot ;-))

I'm pretty damn sure he knows it is offensive and it is very likely a word that he and his macho buddies use or used all the time.

Problem is, he clearly hung around people who never felt inclined to call him (and his friends) out on it. It's more about the fact that JT live/s/d in a culture where this sort of think was seen as OK.

If he was playing golf with a famous athlete or some other celebrity and he said it do you think they'd pull him up? My guess is no. Or when he was 16 or 17 playing with friends? Again, I guess not.

He has conditioned himself to think it's OK. He absolutely knows it's offensive but he didn't care.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

On the range I just let loose with a growl, a grizzly bear growl. Not too loud. No words.  People move down only one or two stalls away from me.

Maybe they can't tell if you're growling at the ball or passing gas?

Imagine the shit storm if Reed would have uttered that. This thread would be 3000 and the media would be all over it calling for him to be band from PGA.

In fact, Patrick Reed did utter that "f" word in the HSBC Championship in Europe.  Perhaps you were alluding to that, I don't know.

As you now know…

BTW I’m not completely displeased with my posts there, but I have grown in the last seven years.

Follow up to this, was Reed accused of cheating on PGA tour back in 14?

It does show people have changed since 14, as I read a bit of that thread and saw a lot of he is just a 24 dumb kid(paraphrasing). Crazy some of the words dropped in that thread.

Huh?

Let’s stick to the topic here, please.

Sure. But also, it’s “okay” to say the word if you’re talking about the word.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
