I believe that this might be the greatest example ever of the Streisand Effect in action.  Had Smith done nothing at all, the joke would've been forgotten by the world within 5 seconds and we'd have all moved on and had a chance to be excited for him to win an Oscar.

Now, without even making an effort, the whole world knows many very dirty details about their lives, their marriage, their religion, etc that most would never have cared to know about.  Old clips of him making bald jokes on his show, on Arsenio Hall show, reminders of other similar stuff he or she has done in the past, etc etc etc, all because of that one action.

I guess if you go with the "any press is good press" theory then he was a genius for doing what he did, but I'm thinking it's really not a good look for Smith at all.

I agree with @Denny Bang Bang that Rock isn't "less" wrong in this, he's not wrong at all.

I'm not sure it's the greatest example ever. But I agree with you. It is definitely a very good example.

Will Smith has forever changed his life... and he will never live this down.  A single, stupid, emotional decision can do that.

Beg to differ. Everyone will get over it with all the really important things that are happening in the world right now.

Yea right. If you think he’s going to face any serious consequences from this, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Almost all the consequences will be to his own self-image.  And there's the possibility he'll be "blacklisted" for future movie roles if producers perceive he won't be the same box office draw.

How much are you asking for the bridge?

No.  Let's see what happens.

An-Image-Of-Charlie-Sheen.jpg

Several Hollywood celebrities, who were once at the pinnacle of fame and success, have now become outcasts.

Hardly a comparison. Sheen was guilty of a hell of a lot more than what Will did. And it was over years of bad behavior. WS will suffer mild consequences for a very short period of time if that. And …Charlie was never the box office draw that Will is. Also, for every example you give of career wrecking, we can give another who is doing just fine despite. Brandy, Chris Brown, to name two.

I have read the 'Academy' is mulling over the incidence now. I don't see how they would be done with just one boiler plate statement on this. Some fallout should be expected.

Let's revisit this in a year.  I've got you on my calendar.

If Will chooses to take the ‘ I’m dealing with mental issues now’ then forget it. He will not only be forgiven, but he will be praised for his strength and ability to give such a great performance. He will be applauded for continuing to sit through the awards show and collect his $140k gift bag and give an acceptance speech with all the mental strain he’s enduring.

I would think the 'Academy' is self serving enough to do something in their own interest regardless of WS's mea culpa/WIP cop out. They've got far more at stake than WS.

Well the fact the spineless academy let him sit there and enjoy his evening and get a major award despite assaulting a presenter shows their teeth.

    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.

    • Thanks man, sometimes it’s hard to improve bc when I’m not feeling comfortable I don’t like practicing bc I get frustrated. Any advice?
