I think half the people on here have no idea how far they hit it.  I just wrote a thread about how when I really measured, my irons were about 30 yards shorter than I thought on average.  This past Saturday, I hit the best drive of my life.  Hard swing, totally square, and straight.  The scorecard said the hole was 450, and I hit it right next to the 150 yard marker.  So, a drive that felt great that was 300 yards!  Well, no.  When measured with GPS, the drive was 239.2.  The yardages on the course were insanely off.  I double-checked with google earth since I hit it just over a fairway bunker, and sure enough the edge of the bunker was 230.

I'm going to say right now that if you carry a 10 handicap you do not drive further than 280.  You may, some time ago, have hit one drive that was 280, but average?  I'm not buying it at all.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

It's great that you've realized you're not as long as you thought you were, but how about "typically" drives 280. Would you accept that claim from a 10 handicapper? I mean a true 10 handicapper here, not one who reached a pinnacle of mediocrity after months of dedication. I'm talking about someone who plays occasionally, hits the ball okay, but needs to tighten up their game a little. I played with an 11 and a 14 last week (real indexes - no interweb BS) and both of them hit the ball >280 on every drive. Wasn't always in a good spot when it was done rolling, but still, they were long.

I know I got considerably shorter after I bought a laser.  I've hit several of those 240 yard "300 yard" drives.  As an aside, I was also better before I got an official handicap.

Yeah-no debate from me that it happens, I've played with a few of those guys.  But it's rare, and certainly rarer than the internet makes it out to be.

Swing changes seem to be paying dividends in the long clubs, but strangely enough loosing a bit in the wedges (used to be a sweeper, now take reasonable divots, maybe my kbs tours in wedges dont like that).  New distances in METRES:

I put ranges because I almost never try to hit it as hard as I can... i.e., I'd rather hit a 3/4 PW 125 yards then try to kill a GW

This has been a tough one for me: between losing weight, making swing changes, experimenting with different balls, I never know what each day will bring.  I'm going to put what I seem to hit most of the time, but from round to round there could easily be a 10 yard difference per club in either direction.

comfortable (carry) distances on stock and in control swings:

driver: 275 to 280

3w: 250

2-iron: 225

3hybrid: 215

4 iron: 205

5 iron 193

6: 182

7: 172

8: 160

9: 147

w: 135

s: 115

l: 95

I gave up trying to kill the ball a long time ago, now I just try to stay in balance and keep an even tempo.  I can hit each club 10 to 20 yards further if I want but I rarely try to do so in a round unless there is something to be gained (like hitting it higher and stopping it on a firm green etc...)

on the course though i'll hit club from all kinds of distances depending on how it feels and where I want to miss it.  I'll hit 7 iron from 160, 178, and even as short as 155 (if I need a low-cut etc...)

Bag:

4-9 irons: Bridgestone Tour Premium DG-s400
Wedges: Vokey 200 series: 48, 54, 60 DG-s400
Putter: original Cameron Newport gunmetal blue

    • Day 85 - Played 9. Driver was solid, approach shots were pushed, chipping/pitching was better, putting was rough.
    • Day 514, March 28, 2024 Quick ten minutes while waiting for the wife to come home for our trip.
    • Day 262: did a stack session. Worked on rehearsal swings during rest breaks.
    • It's been a little more than a year since I can last remember hitting golf balls and today I just got my second cortisone injection in 11 months. I thought maybe shortly after the first injection I was going to be able to start playing again with therapy but the pain while doing my backswing past halfway just didn't subside like just lifting my hands up in the air did. So today the Orthopedic surgeon put more in the backside of the shoulder than before to address the tendon more. I'm going to try therapy for another 3 months and if I  can't swing the club without pain then I think surgery is going to be my next option.
    • I was just down visiting family in southern California and we played a couple rounds of golf. I hit my ball into the deep rough near some tree's and my cousin's husband offered me his Sim 2 Rescue Hybrid to try out. And I felt the same way, wow! I loved it, it also had a Pure DTX grip on it which I loved. As soon as I got back home, I ended up buying two used Calloway Rogue X hybrids, 3 and 5. So far I've only tested them out at the range, but I love them. They're much more forgiving than irons for me.
