Bad enough when the lunkheads do it at the munis I play on. If I ever get that chance to play Sawgrass, I'd be beside myself.

Yeah it was pretty rough. It definitely ruined the day. I tried to move on the next day. It was actually a trip with some golfers from our church. On 18, I wanted to yell obscenities at the guy but I decided to take the high road. Not sure I would have had it not been my church friends. :)

Slow play is the worst, nothing else comes close.

90% of golfers feel this is a problem, unfortunately the other 10% don't seem to make an effect to speed up play.

Ignorant golfers. The ones who don't rake bunkers, fix pitch marks, let people through, use etiquette, etc. nothing makes me more mad than this while playing. Second is a smaller one but still digs into me sometimes. I really don't like when people talk about your or other people's game DURING a round. For example dropping comments about a slice, draw, particular mishits, scores, or where they think your ball ended up on a course they don't know. Focus on your own game, it's the most important thing to you. I'm not going to reconstruct my whole gameplan and swing in the middle of a round, but if you do have advice that you think would help, just wait til we're off the course and I'm all ears.

I have a family member who likes to tell you what is wrong with your swing. Anytime you hit a bad shot he insists "you pulled your head".

Regardless if that is really the cause of the problem.

I try to stay positive to my playing partners during a bad round. If they hit a lousy tee shot, I just inform them they have a good second shot, they can get home from there.

I dont try to fix anyones swing and I dont want anyone messing with mine, especially mid round!

PEOPLE WHO DON'T YELL ... FORE !!

My FORE is pretty brutal & scares most people I play with, but I always consider it top priority when I mess up & even have a remote chance of hurting someone.

It always really bugs me when people don't yell out like they've got a pair ... BUT ... I lose my sh1t (verbally, not physically) when I've finished a hole and I'm walking off & still on a green and hear a ball hitting the green around me.   I'm normally a big teddy bear kinda guy ... but the few people who've done that come away wishing they hadn't ... my Irish gets up in a nano-second when I hear a ball hit a green when I'm still on it - absolutely no excuse (particularly for a par 3).

The other day on the course there was a foursome. Two guys and two gals. They were foreign and barely spoke any English. The entire round they spent getting up behind their women and showing them how to swing the club and hit the ball. We were a few pairs behind them and this is an executive course that is really family oriented, so slower play is understood. But this was crazy. This wasn't waiting on a nine year old and family of four. This was two couples probably in their 50s legitimately trying to teach their women how to play while on the course. By the time they were willing to let people through they were heading to the 8th hole. Took 2 1/2 hours to get through nine. The worst part was people coming up behind and getting mad about us playing slower. We tried explaining to them that there was nowhere for us to go because when we get to the next hole there will be two pairings waiting to tee off. Why would you take them on the course to teach them? I don't understand.

This is exactly my outlook. I just try to be positive and hope for a good recovery unless they ask for advice. I've always seen it as a bit pretentious to constantly give advice, even when in reality I know they are just trying to help.. that's why I never get to bent out of shape about it. It's just a one of those annoying little things though.

New peeves for me

the guy that lines up his shot, takes 4 or 5 practice swings, relines up his shot, another 2 practices swings, finally addresses the ball and hits a bad shot and then claims it was a bad shot because he was rushing.

Guy who waits for the green to clear on a shot he couldn't reach the green on if his life depended on it.

As a guy who could possibly be accused of both of these (though I don't say I was rushing on the bad shot) I can try to explain why someone may do this.

Have you ever got the feeling that a shot was going to be bad as your were going through the pre-shot routine?  My routine typically involves standing 5 yards behind the ball and sort of pointing my club at where I want to hit it then lining in beside the ball and taking my practice swings.  Occasionally I'll have a hell of a time getting a practice swing to "feel" right and generally that is when I'll back out and restart the routine.  It might just be remembering the bad shots, but I swear when I don't start over I almost always hit a horrible shot.  The worst ones are when I literally feel myself producing a flawed swing but unfortunately I find myself unable to stop my downswing and just have to take the horror when it comes.

If I know that I can't reach the green with absolute certainly I typically won't wait for it to clear but I will play it safe and maybe overly so because even on those minuscule chances it gets into my head that I might interrupt or hit someone.  Hitting in these situations tends to always end badly for me, as I psyche myself out and worry too much about the people I'm hitting towards instead of worrying about the shot.  I've gotten to the point where I'm fed up with my brain's lapses as being the main cause of a horrible shot so I tend to just wait another minute and then hit to the now clear fairway/green.

Guys who think they play at a nice pace but, no, they don't.

A couple of days ago I was playing late with a group of guys who aren't very good players, but they are not slow. We knew we had to play at a good pace to finish before dark and we were in carts. On the second hole, one of the guys hit the wrong ball, leading another guy to do the same, and we didn't discover it until they got to their next shots. They both went back to correct it and it took a little time but not a lot.

There was group behind us of very good players who play for a lot of money. They are good, but they are grinders who will tell you they are just "deliberate" but in actuality they are slow. After we tee'd off on three I had to ride back past the second green and one of them called me over and said, "You are going to let us play through, right?" I looked at him and said, "Why? We had a mishap on the last hole but we will be fine. See you in the clubhouse." He again said that he thought we should let them through but I just drove away. They probably waited for a minute on the third tee but we never saw them again. We finished with plenty of time to spare and they finished the last hole in the dark.

Self awareness is a wonderful thing. All that guy did was make himself look foolish.

When I see right where my ball landed, but can't find it when I get up there and search.  It happened just last week.  My tee shot bounced twice in a left-to-right sloping fairway.  Twice!  And I saw right where it went.  It should have been just a few feet into the rough, but I finally had to give up searching for it.  Oh sure, I realize it's my own fault.  But it makes me MAD!  Mad at the world!

Calling it a "fairway METAL" - seriously.  woods, hybrids, drivers, what's wrong with that?

that's a great "GOLF shot" - thank you, I thought you were talking about a shot of scotch....sorry, golf scotch

a fine "Driver of the GOLF ball" - you mean not driving the golf cart?  thanks

etc, ad nauseum

stop it - if not, then add the stupid "golf" into everything and at least make it funny.

"He's a very good GOLF putter".

"Let's take a look at his golf swing, see here at the golf takeaway it's square, now at golf position two, you can see that his golf fairway golf metal is golf parallel and still on golf plane.  His golf followthru is golf full and his golf rotation is golf impressive.  Golf."

There's a guy in my league who, every time we play against him and his partner, tells me "you need to slow your swing down about 5 mph".... He's a bit worse than me and his swing is way worse... I finally snapped the other day and told him to stop telling me what to do. I had been laughing it off but after that 15th time it's hard to let go anymore.

I would never say fairway metal in person . Heard it on mcginnis and katrek and they even had a discussion about saying it. It really sounds douchy.

You might remind him the next time that he's forfeited the hole (assuming its match play).  If he does it again, he's lost another hole.

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
