Ive been using my 3 wood lately a lot off the tee. Its a ACUITY GOLF RCX 14° reg stiff that i bought off ebay from rockbottom golf. I can average about 210 or so, sometimes get 225-230 if i really hit one really well. I dont hit my driver much farther than that if i hit it well and lately i havent been hitting my driver well, its like i cant control where the ball goes. I can hit the 3 wood pretty straight, i tee up like i do the driver with about 2/3 of the ball above the top of the club but its pretty low profile so i dont have to tee it up very high. I feel more confident using it. Was going to go to the range today to try to work on hitting my driver better but its raining here so have to wait for another day.

240-250 carry. 15*

The one thing I did to this club is get it splined and man did that help. I bought it straight from Golf Galaxy and the shaft was put on terribly. Now that it is aligned properly I love it.

I don't carry a 3-wood, but my 17° 4-wood goes about 220-230 off the tee, with the tendency to draw a bit.

I usually prefer my driver because of the oversized head I usually make better contact than with my smaller 15* 3 wood. Only use my 3 wood on shorter holes where there is really no other choice.

Mine is 15*. I hit it different distances, depending on how well I actually strike the ball. For good, clean hits, I'd say it goes 230-240 including roll. I've definitely had some end up close to 280, though.

I too don't use a driver due to my not being able to control it well.

15*, carry about 235 with an easy swing, 250-60 if i rip it (and actually hit it well)

Like most of the other guys who posted here I use it in these situations:

1. tight fairway
2. dog legs or anytime i need to work it right to left or left to right (not really good at shaping shots with the driver just yet)
3. driver is just too much and would leave me at a weird yardages in to a par 4
4. usually for the first few par 4's no matter what just to gain some confidence for the rest of the round :)

I'm just wondering how far you all hit your 3-wood off a tee and what degree it is? Also, how often do you use it to tee and what situations?

I like strong 3 woods, so mine is a 12.5* and when hit well is good for ~250 yds. on the fly. I guess with roll out, depending on course conditions any where from 250 to 265 yds. I play a MacGregor NVG2 12.5* with a Graffaloy Prolaunch Platinum R flex SST/pured and tipped to 5 wood length.

I do the same. I think I read it somewhere that Lee Trevino (or was it Nickalus) that said he never uses the driver on the first tee. No matter whether it is a short par 5 where I can reach it in two if I hit my driver or a long par 4, I always start out with the 3 wood.

I use a 17.5 4 wood that goes 245-250, both off the deck and off a tee. One of my most consistent clubs.

I don't know who said it, but they sure were on the right track. I've only played about a dozen courses and most of them have started off with a short or mid length par 4. My home course in Hawaii is a 391 yard par4 and my home course in St. Louis is a 320-350 (i think) par 4... i usually hit 3 wood off the tee and then a sw into the green.

I've shaved 2-4 strokes since I've been more judicious about using 3W versus driver off the tee.

Some helpful posts here. I'll try starting with the 3W on the first couple holes as suggested. I do tend to block drives early on, before I've relaxed a bit. Man do I hate ending up in right rough off the get-go.

The 3 wood is my best club. I almost always hit it long and straight, especially off the tee. Usually it will go between 250-270, but I've hit it as long as 315 yds. The driver is a different story...

The 3 wood is great, i can totally hit it much straighter than the driver

    • When I got to Florida this season (seasons instead of years since the years overlap) one of the guys asked what I had done, said I was about twenty yards longer with my driver. Said that I had a different driver which was true but looking back it’s really the shaft that’s been the difference. It’s similar in principle to the Autoflex in that it’s light weight and also light flex. Since most of my clubs are bought used I have difficulty finding senior shafts most of the time and being old and slow that’s what I need. Bought the Callaway driver, for several years I preferred Ping drivers, because they only had a couple of used drivers with senior shafts in my price range and it’s been probably the best I’ve had. Longer and very forgiving, decent distance even on my mishits and almost always in play. Keep in mind that my swing speed is probably under 70mph.
    • Day 17 - First round of the year. It took me about 6 holes to remember how to hit off grass. Short game was lacking, but the round could’ve been much worse. It’s nice that my new “bad” is my old “good.”
    • Yes this was what I was thinking you have two golfers same 5 HC same swing speed 110Mph ...one you changed the driver head to a 10yr old model head but the same loft etc the other you changed shaft ...now if its just 10yr old shaft of the same flex weight etc it would be more so the newer head IMHO ..but if the shaft was changed to softer flex lighter than player was use to then the shaft would be the winner IMHO
