Why do you want a "Gimme"?

Our group takes gimme's inside the leather. Speeds up play. But anything outside that is rarely given. If a player is out of the hole on our bets, we sometimes give a few outside the leather. Again, just to speed up play.

To speed up play??? I'm well into middle age, shoot 110-120, take all my putts and I can play 18 walking under 3 hours easily. Those putts aren't slowing down play.

I have a friend that is constantly wanting a gimme when he has a three foot putt. He will shoot in the mid 80s when I give him the putts but when we play with other partners that won't give them to him he's in the low 90s. I always putt the ball in the cup and not accept any gimmes when we play together, hoping he will take the hint. How would you handle it?

If you're competing against him, I'd make it known before you tee off that we hole everything. If not, who cares?

I used to pick balls up inside of 3 ft before I started playing blitzes and tournaments again - as a captain, I have to putt everything out, so I always putt everything out now. Everyone in our group are single digit hdcp players so no gimmes are ever given. We play it out till it's in the hole so we can hear that sweet sound. No matter if it's for a 2 or an 8.

No gimmies. I will concede putts to people in skins games or stroke play, but I don't ask for gimmies.

I don't know why you guys are so proud not to take a gimmie. If I'm playing a match and the other guy wants to give me a putt, I TAKE IT!!!!

The OP was talking about STROKE play... there are no conceded putts in stroke play. In a match, if your opponent concedes a stroke or a hole, then you are finished with the hole. Putt it out or not, it can't affect the outcome.

ask him how many "Gimmies" Tiger has ever taken

When he's playing match play, he takes them any time they are given by his opponent, just like anyone else. As I said above, there is no choice. When playing a match, you cannot refuse a conceded stroke, nor can it be taken back once conceded.

I always putt out; but on 3 ft putts I'm about 50%.   Much better from 20-30 ft.

Clarify? You're not better than 50% from 20-30 feet. Or even 10 feet.

I play with a buddy that's all about the gimme's ... he considers it a gentlemens courtesy.    I don't accept it unless the put is the length of a grip or less (maybe 9 inches) - I think out of 100 of them, I would make 100 of them even at my hcp, so I'm ok with it.

I have never understood people begging for a gimme (I saw that again today). If you are that close that you think it's a gimme, just putt the damn ball into the hole instead! It should be a no brainer because it's that close, right? ;-)

It's a funny thing when you are playing with strangers when they'll assume gimmes. Many times I'll leave a lag putt a couple feet from the hole and they'll knock it back at me unless I tell them I want to putt everything out. Maybe you call those takees.

He wants 3’ gimmes???? Hahaha, tell him to take a hike. That or play him for money with hcp, no gimmies.

I am not a fan of "unstroked hole outs" when I play rounds with folks new to me. I neither take, or offer gimmies. However, if others take gimmies, I don't have a problem with that either.  If that helps them to better enjoy their game, I say go for it. We are all there to have a good time.

Now if I am playing with own group of friends, folks I have known most of my life, folks I have golfed with for decades, we take gimmies. However, the gimmies we take are usually with in a ball width, or two of the hole. The ball has to be really close to the hole. We also count those gimmies as a stroke, since we usually play for a $1.00 a hole.

why would you care?

why does he need someone else's permission?  it's his round, not theirs

I would 'handle it' by not betting with him and just enjoying our rounds together and letting him play his round and I'll play my round - (though this is how I handle every round and every playing partner)

personally, the sound of the ball falling in the cup signals a completed hole to me (OCD much?), if someone presumes (incorrectly) to give me back my ball, (unless we're holding up pace), I'll always go back and putt it out anyway.  I'll thank them, and just tell them I need the practice, or like that sound.

Now, I'm not criticizing you or anything but what is the time savings? 5 seconds? 10 seconds including reaching down to get the ball? No one waiting would ever criticize you for finishing the hole with a 6" putt left.

Unless you just hit a sand shot and everyone else is about to finish and you have to rake, go get your putter, etc etc - each situation is different.... normally, it's not that big a deal to just putt out

Some people play very casual golf and like it that way.  Some people are very loose with the rules, because they enjoy it that way.   Who am I to tell someone how to enjoy their round?

I'm generally a chameleon with whoever i'm playing.  If they're giving me 2 footers, I give 2-footers back.   If they're putting out 6-inchers, I putt everything out as well.   When you're playing a friendly round with some beers or lunch on the line, who cares?  It all evens out in the end.

I have missed 18 inch putts so the only real "Gimme" would have to be a couple of inches which I just tap in.  If I am not playing a match and my playing partner starts taking 2-3' "Gimmes" that will be his problem if he posts the score.

This much said, rarely will anyone I play with take a 2 foot gimme, and only when the hole is pretty much lost by their team.  usually, if anyone tries to take a gimme over a foot, or anything that player wouldn't make 9 out of 10 times, I usually just laugh and say good one when they ask "is this good?"

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
    • I would guess putting grooves in it might make it non-conforming. I am not sure how stringent the USGA is on restoring golf clubs.
