I must be missing something. How do golf spikes give you more traction on the smooth surface of a rubber mat? There's nothing to bite into.

its turf...rubber mat...thats what the spikes bite into.

Never wear them on the range (grass), and sometimes I go without them on the course..don't really notice a difference to be honest. I wear them most the time just because I feel like I should.

Don't go to the range much, but if I do, I'm usually wearing sandals/flip-flops. On the course, it's usually golf shoes (although they look and feel like sneakers), but I'll bring along the sandals and change into them if it's nice.

If I'm on the golf course, range, practice green, chipping area or whatever, I'm wearing golf shoes. Only exception would be if i forgot them.

I don't usually wear them on practice mats, but on real grass it's a no-brainer.

I wear golf shoes, but I wear an older pair of shoes I only wear for range/practice sessions. I hate to tear up my good shoes practicing.

Yes. My golf spikes have mush more rigid soles than my sneakers, and my sneakers and golf shoes are different heights.

I always used to wear my golf shoes mats or grass. Of late I only wear them on a grass range. Tennis shoes otherwise and am happy with how they perform. (one of the reasons is my local GC range is a bit of a walk down a hill on a cart path, up on the way back, much easier on tennis shoes and does not wear out my golf shoes as fast)

I wear golf shoes but I don't use my 'gamer' adidas shoes but rather some FootJoy shoes. My range (when it's off the grass anyway) is very sandy and shoes get beat up out there. This way I don't beat up just one pair of shoes.

I wear golf shoes. The only time I did not I slipped quite a few time; pretty scary when you're on the 3rd floor of a multi story driving range :)

I've been noticing that most of the "I almost never wear golf shoes, even when I'm golfing" coments come from very low handicappers....

I can't wait til I get good enough that I don't even need to fork out the cash for golf shoes. Do the pros only wear them because they're free for them?

I practice a lot in loafers with a slick driving sole. I like it because it's thin so I'm closer to the ground and it makes me focus a lot on balance when I'm working on the short game. Yeah, it's not the best shoes but it's too much to bother with putting on my golf spikes just to practice.
