Really no problem with cargo shorts (although I don't wear them golfing myself) or the backwards hats. As far as cell phones go, I don't really see a problem with it as long as the person isn't using in constantly and you're having to wait on them all the time. Don't like the ideas of jeans though... I realize that and agree with the the general premise of the article that golf needs to evolve with the times but I still don't think jeans have a place...

And a definite NO on the hot manlove.

No jeans, no t-shirts, no holding people up while on the cell phone. I am in favor of cargo shorts though. I dont wear much for pants besides jeans so I will golf into the winter as long as I can in shorts, they are cargo shorts. If I were a private club board member I'd be more worried about the attitudes of the older "rich" members then the clubs future generations in cargo shorts.

I don't get the no T-shirt stuff. Doesn't need a collar to look good.

Cargo shorts, I'm no fan, but whatever people prefer. Jeans however, I cannot fathom how people would want to golf in.

Cap backwards, time to realize you are on a golf course, not a skate hall.

I don't see how clothes would affect the image of the game. Golf isn't an easy sport that most people can play in just normal street clothes. A lot of the clothes that people wear while golfing are designed for just that: golfing. They're light, they're airy, they breathe well, they are cut properly so that a person can swing freely and walk comfortably along a course and enjoy the game of golf.

but.

for the people who are die hard golfers like the majority of us on this website and don't mind golfing in jeans granted that they're properly fitted and don't have more holes then this chick , I don't see what the issue is with having jeans on while playing golf. Sooner or later these people will realize that golfing in jeans isn't the most comfortable thing to do, and will revert to other forms of clothing to make the 3-5 hours experience on a golf course more enjoyable.

I understand that "golf" has a reputation of being that "uppity" sport that only "rich people" play, but I feel that that reputation should be abolished as there are so many other sports that cost just as much, if not more, and are classified with lower class america. IE: bowling.

and if there's manlove on the greens, just clean up after yourself please and don't ruin my line, or else i'ma be shovin my putter in the places where the sun don't shine.

After seeing how many people dress these days, I can definitely see how clothes could affect the image of the game.

i agree with most of the article

the only thing that pisses me off to no end (I am a memby at a city public course) is the no shirt, shorts and flip flops on the course
...and full of beers to boot
your not at the friggen beach, your golfing, get a grip already [/rant]

and i 100% agree about the juniors
get those kids on the course and like it - they are the future of our sport

agree with all points 100% - i used to do the backwards hat thing until I joined a private club - and although noone would say a word about it, I would stick out like a sore thumb for being the only one that does.

I love how it keeps saying the younger people. Well the funny thing is, us younger people are the future so in time it will all be allowed any way. I only wear cargo shorts, I feel comfortable in them. I hate wearing the 50's tight short shorts that are considered dressy. I'd rather feel comfortable and wear a loose fitting cargo shorts. Have room in my pockets for glove ball tees ball repair... Things of that nature. Cell phones are you kidding me, not allowed, I set mine on vibrate and check it periodically. What if there is an emergency thats the fastest way to get a hold of me. Now if the guy is just standing over his ball yackin on his phone that is a different story as should get hit over the head for slowing everyone up.

I'm all for diversifying the target demographic of golf, and bringing in new players. More new players -> more opportunities for younger players to sharpen their talent -> fiercer competition on tour, making for higher enjoyment from my sofa. Sounds like a good deal to me.

I'm in agreement with cargo shorts, I can't actually think of how they are banned in the first place. Denim and backwards caps though, eh. I don't really care if someone wants to wear their hat backwards, I mean if you're wearing a cap "properly" at least it's serving a purpose, wearing it backwards is just to show how gnarly you are.

Restricting tee times for women/juniors. Seriously? That happens? ...Seriously?

Cell phones on the course. I absolutely always carry my phone, not because I need to talk to anyone in particular, but for emergencies. If there's an old guy on the next fairway that's having a heart attack and there's noone with a phone nearby, and noone with a cart nearby, the chances of old guy dying increase. I'm pretty sure that's not a good thing. It'd be hard to try to quantify what is an important phone call and what isn't, so I'd just allow the use of phones on the course as long as it doesn't hold up play . Guy needs to dump all his shares before he loses his entire savings? Fine. Guy needs to dump all his shares before he loses his entire savings and he's doing it on the green and there's a group on the fairway and a group on the tee? You're barred.

you speak of only a specific demographic(s) that to social norm standards aren't "standard".

If a brother from the hood wants to show up at a course with his shiny blinged out clubs, pants below his ass, hat off to the side with a huge gold chain, fine, be my guest. I'm not gonna say anything because maybe this brotha from the hood is a decent scratch golfer and doesn't mind playing in the digs that he wore to the course. now, if i'm stuck behind him and I can tell he's not takin this seriously, i'll pressure him all through out the course til he realizes that this isn't a game that people take lightly. He'll probably realize that with his level of play, he should probably hit the driving range first. Now, take that same brother from the hood, and he's playing scratch all day long and isn't holding up traffic, who am i to judge what he's wearing? It's not me that has to suffer in the sun in heavy jeans and a fubu jacket. Plus with golf apparel fashion in today's world, a lot of younger tour players are introducing bright vivid colors and patterns on the clothing that they wear. They're not buttoning there polo to the very top button and they're wearing no-show ankle socks when wearing shorts instead of wearing cumbersome dress socks. like someone said earlier, the young golfers of today is the future of golf in 10-30 years.

By tee shirts I mean, no band shirts or work shirts ect. Not a collarless dress shirt. Same line as your skate hall thing.

I understand your theory, but at what time does golf lose its mantra as a gentlemans game and become just a game? Having some rules and regs on the course should always be. It is nice to be around some people that are clean, well dressed and altleast understand that it isnt just a game, and have some desire to better themselves. Dont get me wrong, there are some well dressed guys that should not be on the course by way of their langauge or alcohol intake.

Good point. Currently in my closet I have two shirts that are virtually the same- plain blue Nautica shirts - but one has a collar and one doesn't. I think the t-shirt one looks every bit as nice.

I know my age might lead some to believe I stand on the pro-cargo shorts side, but I'm not a huge fan of them. I can see allowing them, because even I only have so many khaki shorts, but the baggy, enormous pocketed, frayed ones that people (mostly juniors) wear just shouldn't be allowed. I have several pair of cargo shorts that have pockets, but they are smaller (well, flatter), not frayed, and a normal length, that I think look nice and allowable. I guess I am saying that they should be allowed, but there should be a line that shouldn't be crossed. And that line is the checkout line at Abercrombie, haha. Cap backwards = stupid, but mainly because I look dumb with mine backwards. Cell phones- just be quiet when I am hitting and don't walk next to me the whole time down the fairway because I don't are what you are talking about. Jeans- no jeans. And I can't imagine anyone would want to play in them, khaki pants are 10 times more comfortable. Restricting tee times for anyone is just stupid. I don't think I've ever come across it, other than junior rates only at a certain time, or junior rates only with a parent present (dumb rule) I don't think requiring good looking clothing makes golf "uppity" or "elitist" or anything like that at all. Khaki pants/shorts cost the same as cargo pants/shorts and about the same as jeans.

I'm still amazed that in America you have people

in carts that drive around looking for you to sell you beer on a golf course . Italics overload, but the concept seems so, so ridiculous to me. I just can't understand it. The main thought in my head is that if you buy a beer from them, it's actually them vetting you to see if you should be allowed to play the course. Entrapment at its finest, perhaps?

cargo shorts are too heavy, plus they went out of style about 5 years ago. backwards hats are stupid. the only reason i wear a hat is when i need to keep the sun out of my face. anybody over 21 who wears a backwards hat should be pimp slapped.

That's the thing, the mantra of golf is that it is a "gentleman's game" and not just a game. Giving golf that kind of reputation makes jr's, and women feel unwelcome amongst the sport because only "gentleman" play this sport.

The actual definition of a gentleman is "a man of refinement" .. If only refined men were playing the game then the sport would die out eventually because with today's economy, along with social media and media as a whole ruining the minds of children. If someone were to tell me that golf was only a sport for gentleman, I wouldn't ever go past believing that only rich, refined, men play this sport and rub shoulders while smoking $80 cigars and whacking away at a little white ball. Nobody would ever believe that it takes actual skill to do what it is that we do. I don't feel that the game of golf should be considered a "gentleman's" sport because you're discriminating at that point, but instead change the overall mantra to golf being a refined and skilled sport that requires finess and patience.
