I play with a guy that cheats somewhat regularly. One time he didn't think we could see him and he was behinda bush and tried putting his ball to get a better angle when we "weren't looking". This same guy (when he has a bad hole) always forgets his score, and says "oh it was like a 6 or something".

personally speaking, I'd stop playing with this type of Golfer, friend or not, not remembering your score is even worse then subtracting a shot or 2, that's pretty sad imho.

Ha.... I read this at work and couldn't stop laughing for 10 minutes.... I'll will forever be on the lookout for someone wanting a "gotcha"!

For some strange reason there's no icon for "Golden Bear" clubs. I wonder why?

WOW. You're talking at least 8 eagles to get to that number, and that's assuming they birdied all the other holes. Did everyone just laugh in their face or what?

They all booed. The same team decided a -19 sounded more believable this year ( I still call BS )

I played with an older gentleman this past Sunday. On #18, a long Par 5, he was well over 300yards from the green after his drive. He never put his driver back in the bag, so I'm thinking, "Wow! He's going to hit driver off the deck, IN THE ROUGH!!" Well, he did hit driver out of the rough, after a pulled out a tee and teed it up!

My mother does this. Only she does it for every shot that isn't a chip or a putt. Of course, she only plays a couple of rounds of nine a year and doesn't keep score.

This is kinda funny, not really cheating but funny nonetheless. I was playing in an amateur golf tournament that gets all kinds of players...good...bad...and really bad. I was the marker for a really bad one. On the 3rd hole (the 12th of the round...we started on the back), he hit his first shot into the trees...found it...took an unplayable lie. So he was lying two, hit three on the green about 30 feet past the pin. He rolled his fourth shot past the hole. Hit his fifth past the hole again...angry that he missed the putt...he reached across the hole and dragged the ball back to where he had hit his fifth shot. He realized his mistake, reached down, picked up the ball, realized what he had done again and quickly dropped the ball. I think I scored it a 9, but that may be a low ball estimate. I've tried to figure it out since, but I get bored and haven't had a calculator ready.

The next day...I busted him for tapping down "spike marks" along his line of putt. He argued with me for twenty minutes or so. The rules official even said that I was being too nit-picky, but I said that the rules are very clear...you cannot press anything down in your intended line of play, and the imperfections he tapped down looked suspiciously unlike ball marks (I was only a few feet away). The player insisted that I was out to ruin his score. He even said that the previous day's action (see above) was my fault. Yeah i think he shot 96...95...I really made a huge impact on his scores...

I got paired with a guy that would consistently put his foot to shield the ball while marking it on the green. His ball would be near his heal, and he would place the marker close to his toe, gaining at least six inches every time he marked his ball. It was so obvious, but I did not bother to say anything. He even re-marked his ball on one green, getting him over a foot closer to the hole.
"Never follow a bad shot with a stupid shot."

Got a friend who does daft things. Like, if he's in the bush he moves his ball to a better lie where its playable, of course me and my mate are watching him laughing as he thinks we cant see him...

Same friend, on the 12th hole par 5. His 2nd shot goes close to going over the hedge and being lost. Me and my mate said he be lucky to find it.

Funny enough he does find it, we go to look as we are sure it went over the fence/hedge.

We get to the ball and say "Thats not your ball" he said "Yes it is, look it has my marking on it" I said " Yea, but thats a brand new ball look how clean it is lol!"

It took us probably 5-7 rounds before we figured out why his score always seemed to be a little lower than we thought...

Man I hate gimme's. Not long ago I was playing with some strangers, and they kept giving and taking gimmes. So one of my putts, the guy says 'ill give you that', and GOES TO PICK UP MY BALL! I stopped him immediately. Told him never to touch my golf ball, and that I don't play with gimme's, never have, and never will. I said it nicely, but firmly. Just wanted to make it clear.

This guy was seriously insulted that I wouldn't give or take putts. Like seriously upset that I was playing out the hole (and it was not a pace of play issue). Everytime he would hit a putt close,. he would just give me a look, upset that I wouldnt tell him to pick up.He wouldn't even shake my hand on the 18th. He just turned and walked away. The other guy was great, and even apologized for his buddy when he walked off the 18th. But I could not believe how upset he was.

Funniest I ever saw was a foursome of octogenarian husbands and wives down in Florida.  The front and back nines began with par fives that ran alongside each other, and as I am playing up the first, I watched every single one of them tee up shots in the fairway.  Is it cheating if everyone in the group does it?

I hear about this all the time. Snow bird rules and still cheating.

Having played this game for a very long time I've seen my share of squirliness but for the most part in tournament play most people are honest.

But,,,,The worst case of unbelievable mass-cheating I ever witnessed was a tournament I played in years ago in Syracuse NY. It's the biggest amatuer event in that area and was sponsored by the local paper the Harold-something or other. It was so big they actually had a qualifying round to get in. In the qualifier on the 18th hole I missed a 3 foot putt for par giving me a 76. I walked off that green thinking well it wasn't my best effort but I soundly beat everyone in my group and surely 76 would be good enough to get in. I just about fell over when I turned in my card and was told it looked like the cut would be at 75. I had just moved to Syracuse to finish my degree and knew I was a pretty decent player but left there that day really doubting my abilities and thinking Syracuse must be a hot bed for great amatuer golfers.

Well,,,,That was until the tournament actually started and the first round scores were posted in the paper. Five guy's failed to break 100, and more than half the field of about 80 players failed to even break 86. Of all those players that supposedly all shot 75 or less in the qualifier, less than 10 of them managed to break 80. I have to admit I was boiling with fury when I saw those scores. You can add a few strokes here and there for pressure of a tournament but I'm pretty confident in saying that those 40 or so players that failed to break 86 had some part in cheating in the qualifier.

I was so pissed I actually considered writing a response to the paper but a day or two later other people beat me to it. There were quite a few responses in the paper that there had to be mass cheating in the qualifier for the tournament scores to be so high. It did make me feel a little better knowing that many others recognized there was something going on here and I was actually suprised the paper even printed the letters. I don't know if they tried to clean up the tournament after that because I refused to play in the event and moved away 18 months later. Either way to this day I have Zero respect for Syracuse amatuer golf,,,ZERO!!!!!!

I heard of some guys using lifesavers candy to tee the ball up in the fairway. That way the lifesaver shatters when they hit the ball, and there is no evedence left behind.

I have seen people cheat in many ways. Mostly it comes in the form of where to drop their ball from an unplayable or from a water hazard. The worst that I have ever seen was when I was in a league at a course in Belleville, Mi.. One of the guys was in a trap and literally scooped the sand out from behind the ball, right in front of everyone, and then proceded to hit his shot. When we questioned what he did, he stated that the rules allowed for improvement of lie up to 6 inches. We all started to laugh at this guy due to the fact that hazards were not included in lie improvement (our league was not USGA, obviously). We assessed the stroke and he got angry about it but let it go at that. I now play with a group that has 2 guys who never get more than a double bogey on any hole. On one guy, I once counted 9 shots on a par 3 and he took a 5. He hit his first and second one into the water. He then hit the next (number 5) into the bunker and it took 2 to get out of there then 2 putted the ball into the hole for a 9. I once caught a preacher that was notorious for cheating. It was at the same course in Michigan as the sand shot and he had gone out of bounds to the right onto the driving range. He was about 4 feet over the OB line but proceded to hit the shot. I came over to him and said that he was out of bounds. He tried to play it off as though he did not realize where the line was even though a stake was just to his left. He would not go back to the tee and we conceded by only assessing a penalty stroke. My, my, my. Isn't golf grand?

I've seen some pretty funny stuff but the one thing that really bothers me is the misuse of ESC.

Dave :-)

A guy I play with will not count all of his tee shots. Sometimes he hits 2 or 3 off the tee just because he loses the first couple and will only count the 1 he likes. We all play pretty relaxed but it is so frustrating when I card a legitimate bogey or double and he cards par after taking 3 shots off the tee.

How do you pick up your ball and tee it on a lifesaver without anyone noticing?

Funny thread.

I guess for certain people, the need to be viewed as accomplished outweighs the need to be honest.

One of my buds cheats all the time and we (the rest of our group) know when he's going to do it.  For instance, whenever he hits a good shot, he just sits in the cart and waits to be driven over to his ball.  However, whenever he hits a bad one--one that could be in a hazard or OB, he always tells me to drive to another player's ball first even when we know that ball is safe--like in the fairway or first cut of rough.  He then jumps out of the cart, grabs a few clubs and runs over to where his ball "is".  He's got to be the luckiest man on earth because he always seems to find it.

One day, another bud stayed back and watched him "look" for his golf ball.  Sure enough, he saw him look around and then drop a ball.  From there, he saw him wander away under the guise that he's still looking and then come back to where he dropped a ball.  Next thing you know, he shouts, "Found it!"  LOL.
