AimPoint Green Reading

Had my AimPoint class last night and it was quite the eye-opener. Learned that I under read the break and compensate by pulling or pushing my putt toward the correct line. I purchased a level to better practice the feel part. Was pretty amazed how quick the group had a good read on a 40 foot double breaker. I stepped up and hit it to about 10 inches. That was a pretty cool moment. One question. Has anyone tried using this to map out greens at their home course, or would it be pointless since the pin placement is constantly changing? I am playing today with a buddy who is skeptical about the process, so hopefully I can drain a few extra putts today and show him that Aimpoint is the real deal.

You can always mark down max slope numbers, and which way they break as well.

For three or four spots on each green, write down:

• The direction of slope (an arrow)
• The amount of slope (%)

Then you can always use them to determine nearby spots.

I took an Express level 1 and 2 class. PS sorry about that last post. My phone isn't cooperating.

A good example where AimPoint helped a lot.  The greens at my league course were aerated a few days back.  They did a great job of filling the holes, so the aeration did not affect putts.  But visually it really created an optical illusion about the break.  It was like looking at the green in a video game like TW golf.  The dots appeared to make the break look completely opposite of what it really was.  I had time, so I check the break a couple of times with my eyes closed just to make sure.

Aimpoint is so awesome.

Last night I played a round and had a putt of around 7 feet or so that had a lot of break that before the class there's no way I would have made but I stepped up to it last night and drained it.  Felt awesome!

I also had a putt last night that looked like it broke the other way but I using Aimpoint, I trusted my read and left it on the edge of the hole for a tap in.  Would have been great to make it but I know had I just trusted by eyes, I wouldn't have left myself a tap in.

I use the midpoint technique.  I am surprised that the pros use express.  I believe the Aimpoint website or perhaps I saw a video that said the Midpoint was more accurate.

Even before express was available, I never saw anybody (Stacy Lewis is the only one I know of back then) actually do a midpoint read like I was taught.  Part of it might be because they have extensively pre-mapped the greens and express is just an extra little confirmation on the aimpoint they've already established?

Otherwise, I don't know.

I recall hearing that Stacy's caddie does in initial midpoint read.  Also, they may not show players doing the read because the camera may be focused elsewhere. I do mine pretty fast usually when other people are walking to there balls to mark or getting ready.

That's what I thought too, but I am now 100% converted to Express. I figure any accuracy loss is so minimal it's irrelevant because a) i don't have a perfect stroke and b) good capture speed will likely iron out any differences.

On an another note, sometimes I find the midpoint read to be vague, I think it's more or less straight but can't commit. When this happens I will walk forward to the 3/4 point and read then back up to the 1/4 point and read. This usually confirms or at least firms up my midpoint read and I can commit. Anyone else do that? Does it work for you?

Also, sometimes I'll read a midpoint as "no break" but I can see a fairly significant break over the last 1/4, in those cases I'll take a read on that last quarter and slightly modify my initial read. Anyone do this? Am I over thinking it? 90% of the time my mid-point reads that are zero break will end up being modified to inside or outside edge based on that second input (last 1/4). I find it hard to commit to a zero break read. I usually miss these ****ers as the ball tracks perfectly online and doesn't break at all. Seems I have trust issues....

I have the little Aimpoint circular bubble level, and to be honest, never use it anymore.  Most greens around here are close to a 9, so I just go in assuming as much until I find that they seem a tad fast or slow, then adjust accordingly.

I've used the "8" charts, maybe 3 or 4 times, and I've used the "10" charts 3 or 4 times as well.  I used the "11" charts once in a tournament last year and have never used the "12's."
