Hitting into a Net

To all that read this entry, Please understand that my intentions are not to argue any points or slander any method. If I came across that way, I owe an apology to anyone offended. I have the SNT series along with the Plane Truth, PGA training series, Golf My Way, A to Z, PGA Partners series with Tom Lehman and Martin Hall, etc. I have a library of books as well as videos. I constantly read and research the game and all aspects of it. I have multiple certifications in teaching. The list goes on. However, I do not for one minute think that I know everything. I am always open to new information. I am a +1.5 Handicap and have taught thousands of students over the years with great success and continue to do so. I have competed at multiple levels as well. My point is, I am here to contribute to others and share what I know which has helped numerous individuals enjoy the game. I also know that with all of the information out there, it becomes more confusing all of the time. People over think things and get bogged down. This is a Forum and not a debate. The ole addage, (there's more than one way to skin a cat) comes into play. There's many ways to achieve success as long as certain fundamentals and criteria are met. Again, If I have offended anyone, please accept my apology.

I have an added benefit to hitting into a net.  This weekend I set up a net in the backyard.  My yard is not perfectly level and I realized I can practice hitting from different lies and film my swing.  At the range or indoors, the lie is perfect.  But we never see that in reality.

I must warn my Evolvr instructors that I will be sending video in with all kinds of lies!

After some very good input from Erik, I have constructed my "golf center" here at home.  I bought a Real Feel 5' x 5' mat and then double hung some 1" square high impact netting.  I already had the dog.

Looks great! I got a somewhat similar setup, but I only bought a hitting strip of the Real Feel mat. Shipping was pretty expensive to Norway. :-D I love the Real Feel mat, best I've ever hit, period. According to Erik, they are very durable to. I've hit a lot on my little strip already and don't see and wear. You'll knock out a straw here and there, but they seem very durable to me.

Nice setup! I thought about doing something similar on my patio. I have basketball hoop I need to cut down first unless I can get setup to the right of it. Are those poles cemented in?

Nice set up.  Hope your puppy doesn't stay there when you hit!  I don't have a flat spot like this, but I am setting up something the backyard.

Looks awesome man. I had something like that (and my mat was really, really cheap, not like that one which looks great), but I stood to far away form the net one day and hit a sky-ball into my neighbor's truck bed. Not my best moment. ;-)

Yes, they are the poles that hold up the roof to the carport.  I screwed some eyebolts in the top support beam and then secured the net to the poles with tight bungee cords.

I'll put up some video of me hitting into it in my swing thread in the next few days.  Better let this thread get back to the thoughts about hitting into a net instead of showing off a new set up.

Net Return is the best if you can shell out some big bucks...if not next best is Izzo

There's a lot of talk on this thread about nets - but how can you really improve if you can't see the ball flight? I've been training all winter in Toronto at Lakeshore Links and they've got the HD Golf simulator and it's truly amazing. Not at all like the stuff you see in the big box retail stores - be careful of those guys because they're out to sell you clubs not improve your game.

In the simulator you get all your shot and club information after every shot AND see your ball flight. I can't wait to get outside now!

I can't afford to put one in my home but I would in a heartbeat if I had the money.

I just bought a Net Return and I love it. I was shocked when I realized how big it actually was. I set it up in my family room initally because I thought it was smaller and then realized I had to take it apart just to get it outside. Im very impressed with it. Sturdy and easy to use. A bit expensive, but well worth it. Im just debating now whether i should buy the mat or not. I like hitting off of grass better, but right now I have no grass so I have to hit off dirt. I kind of like hitting off the dirt because it helps me focus on compression and on the flip side learning to pick it clean. Its hard to tel if I have any spin on my ball, but thats where the lessons at the range come into play. I just work on solid contact every time.

It doesn't appear that he did.

I've seen a real improvement in my ballstriking since I've started hitting into the net I've bought.  It really allows me to break down my swing and work on certain parts.

I am starting to come around to a much better swing by being able to concentrate on what I need to do instead of chasing ballflight.  I am still not playing well overall because I am working a lot of compensations out of my swing but, I am also starting to have patches of striking the ball on the course that I could have only dreamed of before.

I don't have any technical explanation for why it works for me other than with the net I tend to be more consistent. It is easier to focus on the swing, timing, rhythm etc. rather than trying to make the ball go somewhere. Though I tend to hit well on the range too. But I can admit I feel "smoother" hitting balls into my home range with no outside distraction. I just need to learn how to take that with me to the course. Put me on the first tee and without fail I will try to crush it, even when I try not to I do. Weird.

Nets, simulators... I don't like them. I want to know for sure where my ball is going. Even the most "advanced" simulators... I just can't trust them.

Inspired by this thread I bought a net....now I need a mat.  Any recommendations?
