I came across this website/thread after meeting Matthew Bond who originally started this a few years ago. I know many people on here doubted his story, because it was rather remarkable, so I wanted to post an update for anyone who might be interested. Its a good read and quite a fascinating story.

Good luck to him.  It's a hard road...

That was an incredible article, thanks for sharing it. It will undoubtedly be a tough journey and the mental strain must be something that only those who go through it can understand.  I got nervous just reading the article and that is probably why I am behind a keyboard and couldn't hit a shot to save my life. After meeting Matt, I hope this thread finds him once again because I know he will read this and use it as a motivational tool.

Am I the only one who finds this article rather infuriating rather than daunting ?

The dude decides to quit at the grand old old age of....25.

I mean it's his decision and all that, but he was never going to make it anyway with that kind of a mindset. I'm sorry if it sounds harsh, he might be a great dude, but that's the mindset of someone who gives up way too easily. Which is a nicer way of saying it's a losers mindset.

Yep, just you.  You can't get to his level with  a "losers mindset" or by "giving up way too easily."

Rich Been said that, before making the tour, he was a "very good 2 handicap and then something clicked"......so, the answer is "Yes," you can make the tour.......

You could also very easily devote all the blood, sweat and effort possible and not make the tour.......

Good luck.......certainly would love to hear that it happened

You're 22. You only have one life. I say keep improving, be realistic about the amount of sacrifice in your future (sleeping in a rusty van eating top ramen for a while - perhaps), and give it a go. I hope you make it.

Custom fit RBZ irons. Taylormade RBZ driver. Some crappy old high-bounce Macgregor wedge and an even older Mizuno 5 wood. Haven't settled on a ball yet - still looking. Decades of football, weightlifting and boxing came together to create the world's worst golfer. I'm slowly correcting that now.

Gents, I'm wondering if you're replaying to some of the original posts in this thread from 2011.  If you read the article that @MitchRapp linked in, you can find what's happened over the past few years.

I didn't feel wading through 9 pages. I got enough of these guys living around me in AZ that are trying to be touring pros or going to practice for the champions tour. Never mind they can't beat the guys their age now on the PGA tour, they just assume they will when they are 50.

Legit statement. Like others here have alluded to, I don't make the time to properly research the history of every thread I comment on. It appears some find that irritating so I'll probably post more carefully and less often,

The link provided a very good article and and a fascinating story indeed.

It is amazing what is needed to make  in golf..

The guy run out of time he said...a few criticize him for quitting too early or having a looser mentality.  But, we don't know if he just could not afford it. He said he made 7k in 2 yrs...it took a lot of time and he could not afford really good coaching. What was he supposed to do?...getting a full time job doesn't allow time for traveling and playing.

I sent the article to my friend who was trying to make the tour last year. He said it's a pretty accurate description of how they feel. Said he it took him 3k/month minimum to keep going (tournament fees and travel in the Texas area) and if you're not at least recouping that each month you can't sustain it. If you have a bad couple months.... what then? You need a sponsor, family, friends, gofundme, something!

Hey guy, unfortunately I could not remember my old sign in, but I am the original poster. I appreciate all the feed back. Also wanted to point out a lot of you are confused on some of the articles. The article by G&E magazine was done on me. The other article where it is referred to as the life on tour and the quy quitting is not me.

I am still hard at it, in fact more than I have ever been. I am currently in Canada preparing for Q school on the Mackenzie tour . I am unfortunately on the wait list due to all fields filling up in less than 12 minutes. But it looks like I will get in. I will be between Canada Australia and the United States this year.

I was able to take some time off before Christmas and have some of my injuries cleaned up. And tbh have never felt better or more confident that I will be there soon.

Anyone wanting to following me can follow my instagram @mjbond23

I thank everyone following supporting or not. Everyone drives me in a different way.

play well

Hey I welcome differing points of view, and I had guessed I would come off as a so and so because of my views. But I stand by them, I cannot fathom how someone can quit at 25. I simply don't understand.

Not understanding is one thing.  Saying that the guy "gives up too easily" and has a "loser's mindset" is another.

What age should he have quit?  As a golfer he was probably top 5% in the world and was still playing local/regional tournaments for the other competitors entry fees; in other words his best hope was to make his entry fee back and maybe cover his expenses.  If you're not successful (and he wasn't very much), how do you eat?  How do you pay for a place to live and clothes?   I assume the guy is like most people and eventually wants a family.  How do you feed kids with nothing but the desire to golf?

Once he got on a low-level Canadian Tour, he was dead last and out of money.  Again, how does he go on?  It's well known that the mini-Tour players usually have some kind of financial assistance to help them.  Maybe that's parents or parents and friends, etc., but going it alone with whatever you have in the bank is extremely risky.

He essentially devoted his life to golf, saw little professional success, had an empty bank account, and had to make a decision.  Maybe one more year would have done it or maybe he'd be sleeping under a highway using his golf bag for a pillow.

So again, you may not understand how the guy could quit but to say that a golfer who is better than 95% of all gofers in the world has a "loser's mindset" is just plain wrong.  The talent, effort, and devotion that requires a person to get that point is more than most people can even fathom.

    • Day 20: Did 30 minutes after getting home from work, before kid's baseball practice. This session was piecing out the new hip move in transition, doing 2-3 rehearsals from the top, and then hitting a ball from between P5/P6. Did another 45 minutes after baseball practice and dinner. Did 30 more minutes of what I did earlier, and then about 15 minutes of full swings trying to incorporate athletically.
    • Day 296: did a stack session.
    • Day 126: 5/1/24 Putting and chipping practice. Slow motion swings with 8-iron.
    • #4 - 1st hole at Kingsbarns I rolled in a 15 footer for birdie. Showed my caddie an old guy could still play a bit. #3 - 18th hole at Basin Harbor Club, Vergennes, VT. I had played matches against my nephew over the years. He had never beaten me although through the years he had become a long hitting teenage golfer. I was 1 up but bunkered near the 18th green. My nephew had a long putt for birdie. I splashed out of the bunker to 4 feet. He rolled his first putt close and I gave him the par. Sadly for him, I rolled mine in and won our last match. He went off to college and then Europe for a Ph. D. It was our last match. Family champion forever. #2 - First playoff hole in the City of Livonia, MI “65 & Over” division. I rolled in an 8 footer that broke about 4-5 inches. #10 Whispering Willows GC. #1  18th hole at TPC Prestancia, Sarasota, FL. A 4 foot slicing putt for par to beat the prior year’s Member/Guest winners and win the Member/Guest with my father at his club. I was having heart palpitations as I played the final hole solo when my father put two in the water. There was never a better golf sight for me when that ball dove into the hole.
    • Finally, wedges getting somewhere. This one a punch gap from 87 yards to about 12 feet. Contact and ball flight absolute restaurant quality. It's nice when grass comes back.
