Therein lies the problem of the President's Cup. Only the US care as it is, to all intents and purposes, their glorified friendly for the Ryder Cup.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to say that the live chat last night was a lot of fun. And it was great to see Tiger snipe some putts too. Good times.

I saw the highlights, those backflips were amazing! :-P

I don't think the U.S. cares any more than the Internationals. Unlike the Euros, almost all the International players are "PGA Tour" players. This, much more than the Ryder Cup, is like "Florida Residents vs. Florida Residents."

Playing for their "country"? Give me a break - only golf fans care.

The internationals have just as much pasion or drive or desire or whatever you want to call it.

True. There's too much friendship involved. The US wins because they are quite clearly better man for man than the Internationals.

Led by Seve, the Ryder Cup became a real hate match when the Europeans joined. It became the European Tour v the PGA Tour. A real us v them encounter. It meant something to everyone involved. This is why, unlike most Europeans, I didn't get upset at the 'exaggerated' US celebrations in 1991 or in 1999 when the US team stormed the green after Justin's putt. By taking it so seriously, they provoked that reaction in the US contingent. It stank of double standards when the Europeans were all up in arms at the US behaviour.

Fair enough..........

I completely disagree with you though. If you are playing in a sport where the leaderboard states your country rarther than your own name then you are therefore, by definition, playing for your country. It doesn't matter how many 'care' about it.

When these groups of players get together and play on a team, they feel more responsibility to the team then to just themselves.  Golf is such an individual pursuit and that is a big part of why so many pro players have pursued the game.  They only have to rely on me/myself and I.  So when they are put into a team atmosphere and given the additional pressure of "The Team" they aren't properly prepared for that pressure. I don't believe there is any pressure from them to perform for their country.  I truely believe it is in support of their internal close group of team and associates. There's a World Match....It is 2 man teams representing each country....Has anyone ever followed it?  US has trouble getting anyone in their top 10 to play in it.  So from that angle I believe representing your country isn't where the pressure comes from. That's JMHO

Just read this after posting the thread about it A lot of countries still have interest in it, Germany, Ireland, South Africa, Spain, Italy etc all have their best teams out there. Gone are the days of Tiger and Duval winning it as World #1 and #2 though...

If it was one country against another, I could see it as playing for the flag. The President's Cup is not that. Neither is the Ryder Cup. The Olympics will be.

That'sright - and isn't it great that players from Korea or Argentina or whereever can aspire to play Presidents Cup?

Do you remember the years when Freddie and Davis would treat most courses like excecutive 9 holers driving any par 4 < 320 yards?

Anyway, the Ryder Cup was pretty much a non-event for a generation too. Then when Seve and company from the Continent got to play and it became competitive, then it seemed to matter. I thought the President's Trophy was great this year.  It was interesting and not so much faux patriotic BS for those without a horse in the race to sift through.

Exactly. They won it 4 times in a row before they got 'bored' and decided to let other US players play in it. Watching them in the one in Spain in 1992 was amazing. They were streets ahead of the field.

I was just curious what people thought of Fred Couples and his pairings of Watson / Simpson and Mahan / Haas?  I found it interesting because Simpson lost to Watson earlier in the year in a playoff and Mahan also lost to Haas in a playoff.  Some people might have some bad feelings having lost in a playoff, but it seemed to fuel them, they played off each other very well in the team competitions.

How can you be mad at someone for beating you fair and square or hitting an amazing shot to beat you. These guys are professionals they have to deal with losing like a professional they get don't angry at the winner when they lose.

    • Played 9 yesterday at Rowley Country Club. Played a scramble format with my brother as my teammate and shot a 40 together. Wasn't good enough to beat my friends but had a great time. Had a decent few shots highlighted by a 174 yard 4 iron to 8 feet. Missed the birdie of course lol. 18 at Pease today.
    • Some great stories here. I'm more inclined to remember good wedge or iron shots than putts. Here's a few that stand out in recent memory.  #17 at Elizabeth Manor (my home course): Last year at Schaubach Cup. It is the toughest par 4 on the course. Long, uphill, OB on both sides, a large bunker guarding majority of front, another lining the right and a steep fall off on the back. Par is always a great score here. Needed a two putt to go in to flight playoffs. Good drive and a decent 7 iron put me on the green but left a long meandering 45 feet carrom putt with green rolled out to 12 on stimp. All but guaranteed a 3 putt for anyone who knows my poor distance control. This one felt good right from the second I walked up. Saw the six-ish break, and executed almost perfect speed and line for the best tap-in I've ever had. We made the playoffs and lost on the second hole eventually but damn that putt felt good! #14 at EM:  North-South (Ryder cup knock off with our sister course Williamsburg GC). This was one of those 30 footers where you putt up a ridge and let it fall off. Higher you hit, more it breaks. Anyway, read both line and speed perfectly aaaannndd executed to drop it from the side door. Demoralized the opponents and soon after shut the door on them the next hole. They had a chance until then. I had felt like I had turned the corner on match play prowess earlier last year.  #17 Stoneliegh, Round Hill This one was with @DaveP043. A 25 footer from a high shelf to a low shelf, where the putt required to be placed just at the right pace up to the precipice of the upper shelf for it takes the slope to anywhere close to the hole. Had been putting decent all day on fairly difficult greens. Dave gave me a good line and spot to nudge it up to. I took and executed for a birdie! Made it even sweeter since I had just birdied #16. #5 at the 6-hole Par-3 course at Belmont, Richmond: Was having a bit of fun with @iacas. Had a match going with him for a soda. Had to make par from 5 feet to tie him going into the 6th and final hole. The greens had heavy aeration holes so it wasn't exactly a skill test. Anyway, I pushed a nervy stroke for the ball to rim out half an inch away from the hole. On most normal the ball stays out, but lo and behold the large aeration hole cut on the edge of the hole comes to my aid and tilts the ball back in the hole!  I don't know what was more satisfying, the putt or the look of annoyance/disgust on @iacas's face at the ensuing run off celebratory dance. 😂. He managed to save face by beating me by a stroke on the last hole but man that was a fun day!
    • Its not. They are just giving an example in a situation say if cant reach it. Example, You have 230 to the center of the green, you cant hit a club you have that far, so you whip out a 3/5 wood or whatever, but you have to hit it soft because there is trouble in front of the green, a bunker or water. A full swing would land you in the trouble. You want to lay up as close to the green as you can. So you aren't hitting a full shot with that club so for distance tracking you can make that shot a provisional and it wont affect the distance stats.
