I agree with this.  Bubba seems to have, as his first priority, entertaining himself with his shot selection rather than optimizing his chances of scoring.  He hits that big slice on the drivable par 4 because he LIKES to play that shot, not because it is the optimum play within his game.  I think Phil had a little of that in him, albeit to a much smaller extent, in his earlier years.

In some ways Bubba is the polar opposite of Tiger.  Bubba will play his style of golf no matter the course set-up or conditions.  Tiger will completely adjust his game plan to suit the course.  If that means hitting one driver all week, as at Hoylake, he will do it.  Tee to green he really doesn't have a style of play, he has assiduously developed every type of shot and will deploy the shot he thinks fit the situation best.  Not many other players could play with his game plan because not too many other players have the scope of different shots he has to draw upon.  Bubba has one and only one way to play because for all of his supposed creativity he lacks either the strategic awareness or the desire to beat the course on its own terms, not his his terms.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I'd read Bubba has ADD and it shows in his golf game.  He doesn't like courses that are restrictive and limit his creativity.  Watching him the last two days you could tell he wasn't having much fun except for being the fan favorite.   He's not likely to ever approach golf in the way Tiger does, he's just not wired that way.

It will be a while for Bubba's head is back in it. I didn't realize until I saw an interview yesterday that their adoption isn't finalized and likely won't be for months. Apparantly Florida still has to sign off on it. He expressed they are fearful they could still lose the baby.

Rory and Luke should have played better. Rory is starting to look like he lacks the grit work through rough spots if things don't go his way. If he's not in contention his entire game falls apart.

Looking at the scores so far, I'd say someone out of the top ten will post a 67, while most of the others will only manage 71s and 72s. There will only be five or six players who will end today with a chance to win tomorrow.

In my UnderArmour Links stand bag...

Low round of the day is -2 so far, and those guys went out really early.  The course should only get faster as the day wears on.

Meaning courses that are difficult and don't allow you to aim 80 yards right of the target?

Guys who can hit the ball straight don't feel that their "creativity" is being hampered.

I'm guessing that a "restrictive" course is one that rewards accurate play and punishes wild shots.

Watson had given up after 7 holes. Either that, or he is not creative enough to realise that he has to modify his approach on some courses.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

out of curiosity, does anyone know the slope/rating of the course as the pros have to play it?  golflink is telling me the regular stats are 140 slope and 74.4 rating for the lake course (which sound intimidating enough already), but i'm guessing it's even higher for a major setup?

On Thursday, with perfect conditions all day, the scoring average was 74.92. If you figure US Open contestants have an average handicap of +4 or so, would that put the rating around 79?

I'm really not a fan of the USGA softening the conditions in order to bring more players up the leaderboard.  The greens are holding from the rough today...

Hmmm, Westwood and Goosen have a chance to get into contention if they have strong back 9s.

IIRC it was Colin Montgomerie.

Wow, Furyk's ball took a hop off the 2nd green like I haven't seen before.  Like it hit off a springboard.

They are shooting a few good high speed shots of close-up impact today. Three ones so far by Tiger. Two long irons and one wedge. Could be something to save if someone is recording this.

According to Hicks I think, 18,000 frames per second.

The tracer on Woods' low stinger was cool too.

Woods just barely made the fairway on that tee shot.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

LOL! Colsaerts just hit an iron off the tee on the short 7th, the par 4 everyone's going for. A guy in the gallery just yelled 'Nice layup." That was classic.
