Check out the SF Chronicle's great pics of Mike Davis getting a hold of the "Bird Man".  Think he's a little pissed?  Davis makes sure everything is perfect for the tournament but didn't account for a drunk Brit "activist" to steal the show.  The truth is his name is the Jungle Bird and he's a deforestation protester.  No, I'm not joking, I don't think he did much for his cause by acting like a moron yesterday.

Webb Simpson showed he has a good sense of humor in This Tweet

Quote:

Andrew James Dudley, 40, of Wallasey, United Kingdom was briefly detained by police after he snuck in front of TV cameras and made bird noises. Dudley was wearing a goofy Union-Jack outfit when he was hauled off by police.

Dudley was not arrested for disturbing the interview but was held in the local precinct’s drunk tank after officers determined Dudley had been drinking, said Albie Esparza, a police spokesman. Dudley was released when he became sober.

“Essentially he made the crowing sounds and … was detained by SFPD,” Esparza said.

Police did not arrest Dudley because he committed no crime, Esparza said.

“There is no trespassing since he had a ticket to be there,” Esparza said. “All he did was go on the green of the 18th hole and make a bird noise.”

Dudley is a noted deforestation activist who goes by the name “Jungle Bird,” according to Deadspin .

“Jungle Bird’s M.O. appears to be invading people’s lives and making bird noises,” Deadspin wrote. “His Facebook page is full of videos to this effect, which you can watch.”

As Dudley was hauled off, Simpson couldn’t help but remark on the situation.

“Yeah, enjoy the jail cell, pal,” Simpson said.

And if you want more, here is more

Quote:
Jungle Bird's Facebook page describes himself as a "fictional character" and "activist dedicated to raising awareness of deforestation :-)."  Perhaps yesterday's episode will push him above 100 likes on Facebook.  Oh well, at least he's still doing better than the Craig James for Senate campaign.

He doesn't deserve the attention, much less a thread. But then again, maybe his real name is Patrick.

I agree with the fun part but it shouldn't be disrespectful.  This guy isn't a fan of golf and does stupid things to promote himself.

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being pitch-perfect), I thought Webb's reaction was a 6 or 7.  That's not bad at all, and it was semi-funny.  Only the wittiest wit would be able to do much better.  I've no idea how I would have reacted.

He was not trying to promote himself, he tries to bring awareness to deforestation. I would think a gold course would be a good place to do that. Look around the web, nobody is calling him a moron.....if anything the word hero is being used allot.

So I guy called Dudley comes onto TST and this is his first post....hmmmmm. There's a connection here somewhere but I can't quite place it.

Davis' angry yank of that dude off the green was the best on-course move the USGA did all week.

Webb's remark made him look like a tool. He shouldn't of even acknowledged the guy.

He didn't. Costas did. Simpson was answering a question when BirdBrain Man did his thing. Simpson kept going, but Costas interrupted. That's when Simpson said 'Enjoy the jail cell, pal', which I thought was a great line.

I thought Webb handled it fine.  That would screw up anybody.  The only thing that made it awkward was when no one laughed when he made his "jail cell" comment.  I thought it was pretty funny but there was an awkward silence after he said it.

I like the line Simpson said... That guy who interrupted the award cerimony of the US open should be black listed from every golf event

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
