Hi,

We will have a tournament in June for 80 people and we need to have 80 gifts. I want to know what are the gifts that people like to get, can you provide me some ideas?

Last year we flopped with too many coffee makers, microwaves, blenders, blankets left toward the end and you can tell people who last picked weren't too excited with the remaining items.

2012 Odyssey putters can be found in the $70-80 range some places online.

The fundraiser tournaments I've been a part of usually get all or most of the prizes donated.  But however you go about it, these are great ideas.  (I'm not a cigar person, but a lot of golfers are ... and who doesn't want a couple bottles of wine???)

You can mix it up with the gift cards too; golf shops, restaurants, golf courses, spas.  I've played in several tournaments that had free doctor exams for prizes.  One was even a prostate exam.  (I did not win that one ;))  Chiropractors are also popular.

And just about anything golf related ... putters, wedges, boxes of balls, bags, push carts ... you can probably find each of those for under $100.

Kudos for recognizing the duds from last year.  I won a cheap knock-off version of a George Foreman grill once, and that thing sat in my garage until I stopped feeling guilty about throwing something "brand new" in the trash. :)

Rounds of golf at a nice course in your area?

That has always been a big hit for big work or customer based tournaments.

lots of great ideas in this thread.

I will add one more

signed sports swag.  If you have some time and its for Charity, inquire to the sports teams in your city and ask if they will send you some autographed prints.  You could also inquire to any local professional golfers.  These types of things typically are a numbers game, send out enough requests, you are bound to get some responses.  You could easily take these prints and then have them framed.  Same thing with jersey's / the ball / puck from the team, etc.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Ugh...I can't stand when some hacker who plays a few times a year gets gifted a box of ProVs and doesn't have a clue what they just received.  For this reason, I'd stay away from tour grade balls, but maybe a mid-level ball would be OK, like a dozen DT Solo or Callaway HX Hot or something like that.

I don't really care who wins the ProV1's if it's not me ... but this is actually a good point.  You're going to have just as many "hackers" in your tournament as good players (if not more) so instead of 1 box of ProV1's, or in addition to, you could also get 2 boxes of those mid range balls he's referring to.  Heck, you could get 3 or 4 boxes of some really low end balls too.

By the way you described the raffle in your first post, it sounds like people get to choose their prizes when their name is drawn, and I would bet that a lot of people would choose more balls over better balls.

Have some blank envelopes and stick some cash in them.  In some put a bunch of $1 bills, another a $20, another four $5 bills, etc ...  Since people won't know what is in the envelope, whether they pick first or last makes little difference.  I would not have all the prizes "cash" and maybe have only 5-10 envelopes.  Adds a sort of element of surprise and anxiety: do you grab the dozen balls or take a chance on getting an envelope with $50 in it??

Since you are buying 80 tee times from the course, you might ask then if they would donate some rounds of golf for the prize pool.  It doesn't cost the course much to give 4 gift certificates for 18 holes and a cart.

If there are women involved keep at least SOME of the stuff gender neutral... Not all of the ladies appreciate a nice Macanudo, or a "ball sack" golf ball holder. Gift cards to local stores and golf clubs would be a great idea.

But the good golfer is gonna toss those to his little boy.....

Golf balls seem like an easy choice, but they tend to be so personal, that I really don't recommend them at all.

I agree, golf balls do tend to be personal but almost anyone would play a dozen Pro V1's if they got them for free.

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
