Which, by the way, was once allowed. Not sure when the rule change happened, but here's a pic of Tommy Bolt at the 1958 US Open (which he won):

LOL....actually, I am about as big of PMick fan as there is....just that those first couple of tee balls were a bit skanky...maybe a bit of reverse jinx psychology??

Not saying he'll win. There's a lot of tough golf left. But the field is sliding back steadily toward Tiger. He's T16 at the moment. Was T 50 something this morn...

Yeah, Tigs even par round was actually pretty solid as far as not giving up ground...

I think even par should be a solid round for Saturday and Sunday. Only a hand full of players shot under par today. One of the reasons why I like the US Open.

That's I chose even par as the score to win. Just got the wrong player shooting it (Kuchar).

I feel kind of like a hater for saying this, but I'm half-way rooting against Phil. No particular reason other than I want Luke Donald to win.

I never understood why commentators and such thought Marion was going to get massacred. It didn't make much sense too me, especially considering how high the rough was going to be and the speed of the greens.

Also, it's the US Open, for Christs sake. Mike Davis would import deadly animals and sic them on the players if he could.

You pin the marker down by placing three tees around it so that it can't move with wind or anything else.

Just watching the end of Phil's round, what a competitor!  Great to see him playing well and also good to see Merion is playing tough.

We could see a winner at over par.

ESPN, Enough with the interviews of the USGA guy or the grounds keeper guy or some other random guy we don't care about!  We want to see golf, not three bald guys talk about Merion.  If you really want to talk, show players golfing while you talk.

If there's no more rain, I agree.

Okay this is stupid -

They got Rich Lerner on TGC reporting live next to the 18th green, just pontificating about Merion. He has to keep his voice down as players are nearby on the green....

How about MOVING AWAY FROM THE GREEN?!?

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
