  1. 1. Should a female student athlete on an athletic scholarship lose her scholarship if she becomes pregnant and cannot perform as an athlete?

Clearly she owns the results a newborn baby. I think you see that helping her to finish college would reduce the likelihood that she might become a further burden via social programs.

There are plenty of social programs to help low income students. You are simply advocating the university foot the bill for another one.

If we are paying for four years of college out of sympathy I would feel as much or more sorry for those athletes that lose a scholarship simply because they weren't good enough to compete at that level.

Hell, while we're at it lets just pay for the students that weren't good enough to get a scholarship offer in the first place. No need to discriminate against them.

1.  If not her, who would you like to see bear the burden of paying for her college?

2.  How does she differ from the pregnant woman who wasn't on scholarship but now finds that she can't afford both baby and school?  Should that same someone also pay for this woman's education?

3.  How about the woman who wasn't sure if she was going to college when she became pregnant......

Would you prefer to bear the burden of paying for section 8 housing and food stamps which could all have a much better chance of being avoided if we let her continue her education and graduate?

That's irrelevant to the discussion (not to mention about as wrong as possible) and if you continue with this line you'll be restricted from the thread.

Yeah, I really hate using the "you're missing the point" line, because its so misused, but in this case ... you're missing the point.

Nobody is suggesting that she can't continue her education.  But she was paying for it with her athletic ability, which, as a pregnant woman, she now cannot do, so why should she be allowed to continue to receive it for free?  That scholarship should now probably go to somebody else who can make use of it.

There is no "let her continue her education".....  A college education isn't free, someone has to pay for it.  As a scholarship athlete, she was "paying" for it with her athletic skills.

One more time......who should pay for her college education now that she, through her own poor judgment and actions, has rendered herself unable to do so.

She may or may not 'own' the results.  You don't seem to want to give her the chance to be responsible for it.  You are assuming she's incapable, frankly.

I don't care.  Why her over anyone else that would benefit?  There are so many others that would also need it, who are you to play favorites.

Let people make their way and be responsible for their decisions.

As I said, it would be decent if the university would volunteer to find 'options' that she could afford or pay off later (and there are tons of options out there already - why add abuse of the athletic scholarship program to that list).  But the problem with your thinking is that it always goes steps too far and eventually everyone pays for her but her.  Charity is great when voluntary, it's theft when involuntary.

(your philophy is well intentioned, but history has shown that this causes large scale large population issues that worsen over time, just to make yourself feel better on a case basis in the near term).

Let me ask you this one:  Someone is in school on a REAL scholarship (academic achievement based) and they get distracted by a family tragedy.  They don't maintain the GPA per the agreement.  Do you give them a free ride on the college?  (i.e., everyone else paying has to subsidize him).  I won't tell you if he's poor or rich - it's an achievement scholarship.

What do you think of high income people paying higher tuition over low income people - for the exact same product?  .....  Perhaps rich kids should be force to skip college and work minimum wage.  They don't need it.

Not our problem or responsibility, nor is it the school's

The notion that every college dropout or non-college graduate resorts to section 8 housing and food stamps is one of the most preposterous and elitist things that I've ever read. It's now clear that you're really ignorant on the subject matter as a whole.

I know multiple college dropouts, as well as multiple people with "just" a High School diploma. None of them are living off of government assistance. Some who *gasp* even got pregnant while in college, or before they were able to go to college.

I know people like to throw the classic, "Oh the poor girl". Not to be sexist, "Oh that poor guy", routines that try to tug at the heart strings of people. Here is the fact on this. Scholarships are a CONTRACT. The academic scholarship, the student signs that they will maintain a certain level of performance academically. There are standards for each scholarship. Some are just have prerequisites, and don't need requirements during college. Sports scholarships are not like that. They require that the student play a sport. If you don't play well, you can loose your scholarship. Look at the number of division 1 football players who loose scholarships because they can't cut it at that school. They end up transferring out to another school.

So you have a female, who signed a contract to perform at a sport. That girl gets pregnant. Now she can not perform at the level she is required to do so. She should loose that scholarship. It isn't fair to the school. It isn't fair to the next girl who would get the scholarship. That girl who got pregnant had a responsibility to her school to perform. In return she would get an education.

You aren't adding any substance to the thread. All you're doing is throwing around classist generalizations and stereotypes. It isn't about throwing weight around, it's about keeping the debate on topic and relevant.

Given the nature of his argument, why am I not surprised when he characterizes Erik as "fascist"?! And I'm still waiting for this months check for not mowing the lawn! ;-)

Let's simplify this and remove the compassion for a woman and her child.  Instead let's say a girl gets a scholarship to play a sport for a college.  She parties too much, becomes addicted to oxy and isn't able to perform at a level that allows her to retain the scholarship.  Should the university be expected to continue to pay for education out of fear she might not be able to support herself in the future?

Scholarships aren't about preventing men or women from being on EBT cards or food stamps they are about a college / university offering a full or partial reduction in the cost of tuition to a person that possesses an outstanding skill or ability that the university deems valuable.    If the person is unable to perform at the agreed upon level the contract is broken and both sides are free to move on.

Your argument or popularity won't improve by calling Erik a fascist, he's very reasonable and has given you quite a bit of latitude in making your point, which thus fair you're failing miserably at.

Okay maybe a bit of frustration in that last post. It's tough debating six or seven attackers at once.

My last point on the topic and you can all take your turn piling on as you see fit.

In a situation where a athlete loses her scholarship because she gets pregnant it seems to me that the school would be held in higher regard if they provided a way for the athlete to continue her studies via providing an affordable situation which would include student loans so she can finish her studies graduate and get a decent job to provide for her new family.

I believe that UMASS does have a young family assisted living program to address these issues.

It seems crazy to finance a student for a couple of years and not find a workable solution.

want to keep the scholarship - don't get knocked up...you are not there for free - you are getting paid to play - it is not like they got hurt - they were stupid, much like drugs, drinking or being out of shape. if you can't produce you are going to get dumped. it is pretty simple.

create a family planning program - please...just stop there is no place for that
