He protected himself from the press and in so doing, from the fans.  But the press protected him too, pre-incident.  Once that happened the floodgates opened.  Before that, very few wanted to utter a negative word about him for fear of upsetting him thereby getting cut off from any access to him whatsoever.  I never quite got this since he provided so little access anyway.  I'm certain there were media types aware of his proclivities long before they were inadvertently outed.

Due respect, but it is ridiculous to claim that the press knew about his peccadilloes and did not report them.  Maybe not the NY Times, but the TMZs and the Gawkers would have been all over it.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I doubt TMZ was aware but these golf reporters are quite cozy with the pros, there's no question some of them were aware, Tim Rosaforte, perhaps.  So I reject your claim of ridiculous, but I appreciate your respect.

The "press" did know about it -- Tiger paid them "hush money" (or better yet, hush services) by agreeing to do a cover story with Men's Fitness in exchange for keeping it quiet (at least, that is the story I have heard).

That's the National Enquirer, or the company that owns them and Men's Fitness. The rest of the press didn't know, or they would've printed it. It would've been a huge, huge, HUGE scoop, and the media isn't going to turn that down. It wasn't as if Tiger was nice to the media anyway.

EDIT: Hey! 1600 posts! A weird one to hit that number on.

Tiger played Miura clubs before Titleist and Nike, I wouldn't be shocked if he went back to them.

we (the press, the fans, etc) built the facade ourselves.

I get what you're saying, but don't entirely agree. His sports management company helped build up part of the facade in the way he was marketed by sponsors and in arranged media pieces. Hardly unique to Tiger, though. Crafting an image goes well back - at least to the 20's Hollywood studio system.

His sports management company certainly helped build up the facade, the problem Tiger had (like many celebrities) is his ego got too big.

Rumors of Woods buying TaylorMade. Doesn't make sense to me, maybe he's part of a consortium?

That's.....fascinating. Honestly. I think the ball choice has to be most interesting.

If true, of course.

We've been here before. We'll see when the Safeway starts.

As Golf Digest reports, Woods has been seen swinging away at Medalist Golf Club, where he’s a member, near his home in Jupiter, Fla. And he’s not just pounding away… he’s striping it! That revelation comes via Jesper Parnevik, who revealed that he’s quite impressed with what he’s seen from Woods in practice. So much so that he’s predicting a “spectacular” return.

    • In response to the first question, yes - I have reduced my average score in 9-hole league rounds by about 3 strokes.  As the attached plot chart shows, my high scores decreased and my low scores also deceased.  So I am scoring in an overall lower range. For the second question, I expect to make some improvement next year based on the results I am seeing in my recent practice rounds.  However, I have noticed that "plateaus" in scoring (and many stats) can persist for long time periods and can be permanent.  With advancing age and decreasing swing speed I may be mostly just working to maintain my current skill level.  I do expect a more consistent range of scoring as the result of frequent practice and overall playing experience.
