How much respect does McIlroy have for Woods? He woke up at 2AM to watch him play last week. And there's this:

Quote

“He’s won 14 majors, he’s won (79) times on the PGA Tour, he’s won over 100 times worldwide. That is not a failure,” McIlroy said. “But unfortunately, people are going to see his career as a failure because he didn’t achieve what he set out to achieve, and that’s ludicrous. Absolutely ludicrous.

“He played the best golf of anyone in the world, ever, for like a 10-year stretch. It was golf that no one had seen before. It brought so many people to the sport, and it ignited a generation of golfers that you see now coming through … so many guys that were just inspired by what he did on the golf course. He transcended the game of golf, and he is nothing but a success and a credit to the game of golf.”

“I would love if he would just give it one last run … because I’d love to compete against him down the stretch of a major.”

Quote

McIlroy said he saw some good signs.

“If you look at his backswing, where he’s taking the club away, where he’s putting the club at the top of the swing, it’s really good,” McIlroy said. “It’s so on plane. And if he can just get his lower body to work a little bit better through the ball, he’s right there. He’s so close. … He’s closer than people think, I can assure you that.”

I think we should wait until mid season to make that assessment. But it's not looking well - for now.

Who knows how true this is, didn't watch his round, doesn't look good, but still early. Also, he missed his private flight to Dubai so had to go commercial so maybe tighter quarters wasn't good for his back, that's a long flight after all.

We all know golf is a perishable skill, and it was foolish to think even a Tiger Woods could take so much time off from the game and come back to make cuts, the players who make cuts play golf every day, every hour, every minute of their lives, those that don't miss cuts.

He may not ever get back to tour level golf, he may simply be too old at this point, sure some maintain it into their 40's but it's not many.

But he isn't that far off like Rory said, he's not out there hacking it up, he just needs to play a lot of golf and get back into the groove, and it may take a full season to get back to that point, golf is that hard, is he willing to do that? is he willing to miss a ton of cuts and still go out there? maybe.

I think plenty of guys "maintain" it into their 40s. Particularly when you're talking about guys who have been on the Tour for awhile, so they know the ins and outs.

Now, most of them haven't had more back surgeries than they have majors, but also… most of them don't have 14 majors. :-) (Had to say most since Nicklaus had 14+ when he was still winning in his 40s. But of course he and Tiger are the only ones…)

Now… none of Phil's or Ernie's success means anything for Tiger except in the abstract.

Just a quick thought… if the cold bothers Tiger and makes it tougher for him to warm up, why can't he wear a heat patch or something? Would that be against the rules of golf? You can use handwarmers, even artificial ones (so long as you don't warm your golf balls with them), so… why not?

Also, Fred Couples said a few times he liked the cold days. He said his back was always tight, and at least on cold days, the other guys were tight too.

Well he's W/D so clearly not going well. Two observations about his swing, he just does not seem to fire his hips anything like he should be and he also looks like he's in pain when he swings it hard.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Tiger Woods withdrew from the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on Friday morning before even beginning play due to a back spasm he began suffering following dinner on Thursday night.

Woods' agent Mark Steinberg said the problem is not related to the nerve issues that have plagued the 14-time major champion over the past few years and that have resulted in three surgeries, the last coming in August 2015.

"He says it's not the nerve pain that's kept him out for so long,'' Steinberg said at Emirates Golf Club, where Woods did not even start the second round.

Yes. Totally. The swing at the Hero was petty nice, it wasn't that scoopy, flippy thing we saw at Torrey. I would love to know what happened to affect this change.

Maybe everything? The holidays, the travel, the cold, the unpredictability of the back. Maybe personal life, the man can be a cipher. Yeah, it doesn't look good, but one day at a time. Let's sit and wait and be patient, very easy to dispense with the hyperbole.

    • Two things… QuadMAX Comparison I conducted a test with the R50 against a QuadMAX. I just did ball data, as getting club data on both simultaneously proved difficult. But, I was able to work around the conflicting IR signals or whatever others were experiencing. I'll make a video eventually, but the short-term info is that the R50 was really, really close in VLA, ball speed, total spin, carry, peak height (the last two are just algorithms of course). It was decent at HLA and spin axis.   R50 Club Impact Video Is anyone else as annoyed as I am that the video includes like one or two frames of impact and after, with like six frames before impact? The before impact stuff isn't all that useful - and the after impact stuff isn't enough to see the club twisting much except on egregious heel or toe mishits.
