I take as much as I can get, for a reasonable price.

The time I need it the most is probably when streaming three streams at the same time. 4K is in the works, if not already here.

You've got to be looking at a LOT of porn on 5-6 devices simultaneously to need more than that.

Depends what you're paying for. If you're paying for consumer level 15 Mbps, then that's great. If you're paying for 50 Mbps...you may want to have a "discussion" with your provider...

Instead of a screen shot, hit the "share" link.  The image link they give you has the grade.

16 mbps is probably plenty.  And you probably do as much video uploading/downloading as anybody.  Does it seem adequate to you?

Yeah, seriously… Guy's connection is faster than 55% of the U.S. It's fine. AOL still makes most (millions) of its money from dial-up, believe it or not… http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2014/08/07/aol-still-makes-most-of-its-money-off-millions-of-dial-up-subscribers/ http://gizmodo.com/5982853/aol-earns-most-of-its-money-from-subscribers

I wonder what percentage of that are people who forgot they had an AOL account.

Thanks.  Now for the $64,000 question.  Why is it faster to download than to upload?  It doesn't seem to make sense that data moving through the system moves faster one way than another.

Please use little, non-geeky words......

Think of it this way, most people only use the web to "search, download music / movies, stream music / video "

These require fast downstream service from the service provider.

Most users do not upload many files to the internet, other than you tube nuts/regular users.

Granted many people do upload and have many various interests, but they are generally individuals who are either professional or hobbyist.

They know the proper methods to compress the files and usually have a regular need for the faster service's.

The cost for these service's hasn't been spent in the US by the major companies for the required infrastructure (fiber optics mainly)

It probably will be 5 or more years before the US has the capability to provide faster speeds.

Most likely wireless speeds will be the new generation for users, via phone service providers.

Cables will be a thing of the past.

Did you just say 2 mb/s up is slow and will take awhile to upload photos???

Also, "reasonable for internet use?" I think you have a very skewed idea of what is necessary for standard internet use.... a 15 mbs / 1.5 mbs connection is pretty much more than adequate for most home users.

You don't know from slow unless you were around during dial up days hah

Have you ever had a friend send you 50 photos of their vaca using their new digital camera, which still set at factory settings for hi-rest quality?

Yes, todays service's are adequate, but not up to speed with other countries.

It's not really a necessity for standard user's, but providers compete for consumers business and must raise the bar to compete.

Yes I suffered through the "dial-up" era....

I get that.  My question is why will data, presumably moving through the same system, move faster one way (downloading) than the other (uploading)?

Traditionally it had something to do with the PA (power amplifier) in your modem being less powerful than the one in the substation by the fiber optic cable. Symmetric lines like T1/2/3 and have pretty bulky modems. Higher bit rates mean more power output. For the receive side more sensitive and higher bandwidth receivers don't require large amplifiers.

In this day in age, I wonder if it's just artificial (they can charge more)? We can get a PA from Hittite pretty cheap: http://www.hittite.com/press_releases/index.html/view/446/print

EDIT: 25W is pretty expensive.

Because of the infrastructure which has been installed to provide the service to the millions of customers as new communities are developed further away

from metropolitan areas is very costly.

When the cables and fiber lines and equipment were installed, their interests were to provide users with only quick DL capability.

The cable companies did not find it necessary to spend additional costs for additional cables / equipment for upload service's.

If my friend ever sent me 50 pictures of their vacation I'd tell them where they can put those pictures after I print them out on extra heavy stock paper. I don't know anyone that sends that many pictures to others.

    • I don't remember a ton of favorite putts (maybe I need to make more) but here's two that I do remember.  18th at Kyber Run  We had been playing a 4v4 Scramble for $25 a guy and it had been absolutely pouring the entire day. Talking like 4+ hours of non-stop rain, but we had this money match planned for a while and the course was happy to take our greens fees. The foursome we were playing against was the group in front of us and they just finished and were watching us come up 18 from under a pavilion out of the rain. We thought we had a 1 stroke lead going into 18, but they had birdied 17 to tie things up. They parred 18. So they knew we were tied as we played 18. We had about a 35 footer straight up the hill for birdie and by this point water is starting to pool up on the green. I'm the last person to putt in the group, step up and hit it about as twice as hard as I normally would from that distance, water is spraying up behind the ball as it's rolling, ended up being perfect speed and drops in for a birdie, giving us the win and not realizing why they were so shocked about the putt until we realized that it was for the win.   12th at Talamore We had been playing 2v2 best ball and our opponents hadn't been playing great as we had a 3up lead through 8 mainly due to their mistakes rather than our great play. I went on a bit of a heater, holing a 10 footer on 9 for par to win the hole, birdied 10 after hitting a wedge to 12 feet and pouring that in, birdied the par 5 11th after hitting my 3rd shot to 4 feet to put us 6up with 7 to go. Par 4 12th, pin is front left and I am on the green back right after hitting a great punch slice recovery shot from the right trees. I had 50 feet left for birdie and was just trying to lag it close, it ended up going in the hole and I walked it in for my 3rd straight birdie and ended the match right there as my two opponents just shook their heads and my teammate was cracking up with laughter.
    • Why you young whipper-snapper you!😋 To OP, I have no routine, I eye-ball up to half wedge (40-60 yards) most days. Only time I am somewhat deliberate in checking is distances to clear hazards.
    • Well, I just got back from 7 days straight of golf in Las Vegas.  I've played all three courses at Paiute Golf Resort. Normally I say that the Wolf course is my favorite, but I do really like Snow Mountain as well. I'll say this, all three courses are really great there. You can't go wrong by playing Paiute.  Then I played a tournament at Bear's Best. Been playing that tournament for like 15-16 years now. We've only been at Bear's Best for the last 10, before that we were at Prime Valley. It was a great tournament. For some reason my head fell off during my Saturday round to take me totally out of contention. I also hit a piss-poor tee shot on the 4th hole of the horserace to take my partner and I out of that.  I hit some really great shots during the tournament. But you don't win tournaments by hitting great shots. You win tournaments by making low scores. Which I simply wasn't able to do.  It was great, and now only 357 more days until next year's tournament.
    • One that comes to mind ... #2 Jasper Hills GC, par 3 Naturally this one was to save par.  Hit two awful shots to find myself on the very front of this fairly large size green. The hole was in the back, left corner with a decent amount of right to left break. I'd only be guessing what the actual distance was, but it was easily over 50 feet. There was so much bend on the back end of the putt that it just seemed really unlikely until the last few seconds when it broke back to the hole, hit the stick dead center and dropped.
