Wow. What an idiot. I just don't get how people go around destroying property that isn't theirs.

They probably don't have any nice property of their own to destroy.

I think that is a little bit excessive.  I can't remember the exact quote but it reminds me of something that Denis Leary's character said at the end of The Thomas Crown Affair while basically telling Rene Russo that he really didn't care if they caught the thief or not.

Last week I was arresting a man who beat his wife and kids, so if some rich guy wants to steal a couple of swills of paint that are only really important to a few other rich people, then, yeah, I could really give a shit.

Not saying it's not bad, but in the grand scheme of things, he's killing some grass and not actually injuring other humans, so ...

if someone destroyed your private property, youd want to beat them up, wouldnt you?  i feel like golf courses everywhere are the collective property/haven/sanctuary of all golfers and i take this personally,

and to me, this asshat is more of a scumbag than Chella Choi.

... thats mighty big of you.

That guy should be prosecuted, period.    Full extent of the law ... cost of repairs, and most importantly lost revenue (unfortunately, thats a very difficult thing to put a dollar amount on when only 1 out of the 18 holes are presumably damaged).

Whole thing is pretty bizarre ... maybe the guy lives on a golf course & is sick of his house being hit by golf balls; maybe he has a problem with golf & thinks it's only for rich people; maybe he just hates golf because he's never tried it - who knows ... the whole trash a golf course because he broke up with gf thing doesn't make any sense.

A local course had vandals pour solvent or something like that on the several greens in 2012. Instead of re-sodding the tried to bring them back only to eventually have to tear a few up. The temp greens killed their traffic for a while. Not sure what drives people to tear up courses but they do.

Not sure what drives people to do a lot of things that people do today.  The world we live in today is pretty sick and twisted.  So many days go by that we all just get up and go to work, go to the course, come home, whatever else and we don't run into that sorta stuff we forget just how bad the world really is elsewhere.

Despite what @14ledo81 thinks :-P ... I'm not a capital punishment/eye for an eye type of guy.  The guy should be punished in the form of having to pay for the damage, and then he should spend whatever amount of time in jail is warranted (probably a matter of a few days or weeks, I'd guess), but nothing really beyond that.

Maybe it's just my cynical nature, but I'm almost surprised more of this stuff doesn't happen in some places. Untended kids (and other idiots) can be destructive little bastards and golf courses in the dicey areas of town would look like easy targets.

Eh, it's just stuff. In this case it is dirt. Yes he should pay for every bit of it but it this society hardly anyone pays for the damage. I don't think a felony is warranted for being this kind of moron however he should have to show up to the golf course and work off his debt until it is paid for even if it takes ten years. Missing work or failure to do a good job should result in jail time.

This sends up red flags to me. I'd be worried about his mental health. This is not normal behavior. This appeared to have been done in anger. If he can't control his emotions, what might happen the next time he gets rejected (or looses his job)? I hope this was an isolated incident from the young man and serves as a wake-up call.

A teenager on a four-wheeler did the same thing to the first green where I used to be a member.

I asked the superintendent if the kid was going to pay for it and he said no, and that the kid's family didn't have any money. :hmm:

I told him they obviously have enough money to afford a four-wheeler.

Teenagers are all awful. I've long advocated for all of them to be shipped off to Guam until they're 24. (This isn't even sarcasm)

These courses are in suburban Buffalo, I play one of them, Harvest Hill, a couple of times a year. It's home to The First Tee of Western NY, and a real gem. I'm actually thinking about leaving my private CC and getting a season pass there next season. I couldn't believe it when I saw the report, and can't bring myself to drive by and see the damage in person. I'm sure the guy will get his though....the course is owned by one of the most well known lawyers in town. He bought it a few years ago, and has dumped a s#$tload of money into it..new clubhouse, stone patio and fire pit overlooking the 18th green, practice area. That just adds to my anger, as this course is improving itself when other are forced to close, and this idiot can't find a better outlet for his aggression.

You don't think that doing thousands of dollars worth of damage to someone's property is a felonious act?  What if he had stolen 15 or 20 thousand dollars in cash or merchandise?  Would that be worthy of a felony in your opinion?  I don't see any difference.  The same value was lost - in fact this is worse because there is likely little chance of ever recovering the loss.  A thief caught that quickly would still have had the cash with him.

OK - true confession time . .I vandalized a golf course in 1990 (I think).  I have no reason for saying this online except to explain the reason why . . . . .  no reason.  I was 16(ish) and highly stupid.  I found myself with the opportunity to vandalize a golf course so I (we) did it.  We snuck onto the golf course at night (for no reason) and found the flags still in the cups.  We took the flags and, like they were spears, punctured the greens and basically ripped the greens all up.  Then we threw the flags in a pond.

We had no malice for the golf course . .we were actually members (our parents were) . .we were just totally stupid . .like the person who did the damage in the pic in the OP.  I'm glad we weren't caught and arrested because we were just stupid kids being stupid.  All involved in the incident (and I still know them today) are responsible members of society who would never even *think* of vandalizing anything  ... but when you're 16 you have a lot of energy and, like George Thorogood said .. it's got to come out.

I think there's a component of having his vehicle taken and repayment via service but idk. If he's a frequent offender of the law maybe. I just don't think giving him this label does anything to improve the situation. It wasn't like he hurt anyone or meant to hurt anyone. At least he did this instead of shooting his girlfriend.

Have you done anything to make any amends at all? Posting here doesn't really count IMO, so don't say that. :)
