Tiger is plus-120 to miss the cut. Meaning you bet $100 and win $120 if he misses the cut. This might be the easiest and safest way to double your money in our lifetime.

I believe you have that entirely backwards there @skydog .  I don't really bet so I won't swear to it, but I think -120 means you have to bet 120 to get back 100.  +120 would get you that amount on a 100 bet.

So that would tell me that they are slightly favoring him to miss the cut.

Nope, sorry I'm right and you have it backwards..

He's also minus -140 to make the cut. Meaning you would bet $140 and win $100 if he makes the cut. The oddsmakers are predicting he makes the cut.

Gotcha ... your syntax threw me off.  You wrote the word plus and then but a hyphen that I read as a minus sign right after it.  I glossed over the word and saw the sign.

Which is crazier odds?

DJ at 30/1

Tiger at 50/1

http://golfodds.com/weekly_odds.html

We've seen Tiger so you kinda have a guess at what you could see, DJ hasn't played since withdrawing from the Canadian Open 7/27, though he did finish T12 the week before at The Open Championship.

Relative to Tiger at 50/1, DJ doesn't seem that crazy at 30/1. I don't think he will win, but I think he'll finish a heck of a lot better than Tiger. Now that he's hopefully gotten his life togehter a bit I think DJ could have a great next few years. That said, he's probably going to have some rust to kick off this week.

Write Tiger Woods off at your own peril. Every time people write him off, he comes back and shows them why he is the greatest ever. Better than Jack, better than anyone. Everyone always says that Jack would have been a better golfer with modern equipment, etc. But back in his day, courses were shorter, golfers weren't as strong and there was less competition. Nowadays there are millions of hopefuls to the crown, Tiger has beaten them all.

But then again, in his last 2 tournaments, he hasn't even beaten one other golfer in the entire field.... ;-)

Tiger has no chance to make the cut, but for a few days, he'll still drive the discussion.

You're correct that just any mention of Tiger will stir the conversation.  I suspect your correct about the "making the cut" too.  I was at the Waste Management Open and followed "the man" for a few holes and he won't work his golf game out in a week I suspect.  Not enough time and too many things to work on.

The last time Dustin Johnson returned from an extended layoff, in the spring of 2012, he won at Memphis in his first tournament back. Obviously, DJ's the smarter pick between the two.

The tournament will be great whether Tiger is on the leaderboard or not. The venue is great and the game is great. If someone plays awesome and goes low, it won't really matter who it is, their story will still be compelling.

I agree all the way

Took up golf late in life with a lot to catch up.

Wow, just read the Tiger tracker on the pro-am...things are not looking good at all. Good luck to him today though. Hope he makes the cut.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
