Basically, Curt Schilling sent a congrat tweet to his daughter on her softball game and two idiots posted vulgar tweets about Curt Schilling's daughter. From what I heard one mentioned something about rape and other sexual acts. Update, I just read some of these tweets. They are some of the classless and obscene comments I have seen in a long time. I rather not post any of the content here.

Curt, using his resources and being tech savvy, found out who these guys names were and responded to the media who they are, where they are at, and what they posted.

In response, one of the people was fired from the Yankees Organization, he was a part time ticket seller. Another was suspended form the college he was going to. I believe he was a small time college radio host on a local radio program.

All I can say is, big props to Curt Schilling for not backing down to these type of trolls.

It baffles me why people would do this.  Even on this forum posters sometimes say things they would never say in person.

I also love a good properly done attribution, and I hope more internet trolls get what's coming to them (but I'm not optimistic). Also, I think it's amusing that one of the jerks worked for the Yankees, given Curt's three World Series wins (one was against the Yankees, the other two were for one of their rivals).

Those folks were classless idiots that got what they deserve.

But what puzzles me is why Schilling would send a public tweet congratulating his daughter rather than a private text .  Isn't that just asking for problems?  I just do not understand the impulse to live out your private life publicly.  And if you do, aren't you just inviting the crazies into your private life?  As just happened?

It is also funny how in an atmosphere where people are increasingly concerned about and hyper about privacy, so many routinely open up their private actions and words for public consumption.

It is a strange world we have made.

This is nothing against you, I hate that logic.  In the end your logic gives all the power to the people who are saying those horrible things. Really by your logic then victim of bullies should never go to school because they are putting themselves out there to be bullied. See how that sounds?

I don't believe that is the correct message to send. I get it, it wont change. The internet is the land of slander, trolling, bullying and harassment. People can hide behind their computer screens and not worry about anything. Except if you run into Curt Schilling. Then you end up suspended form school and losing your part time job with the Yankees. There should be more of this to the idiots who think it is good to go after the victims of this sort of harassment.

I know in the UK they have laws that allow prosecution against people who perform this type of harassment. Maybe we need that here in the USA. The real dark side of this issue is cyber bullying in high school and grade school now that lead to even more depression and possible suicide or violent retaliation against this sort of thing.

No, no, no.  I don't think you should take it that way.  I almost posted after @turtleback wrote that to say that it's off topic for the exact reason that it might nip in the bud the "counter" argument that you're stating.

He's not at all blaming Schilling, he's just pondering why he did that.  It's the same thought that goes through my head when I see a guy say Happy Anniversary to his wife on facebook.  I'm like "Why are you telling me?  She's (probably) sitting right next to you, or was at some point during the day, why not just tell her then?"

I'm not sure what you are saying.  I said the people who did that posting deserved what they got.

But it is naive and foolish for people to go around inviting things and then acting as if their own actions played no part.  You criticize MY logic, but by YOUR logic we would stop giving defensive driving classes because it give the power to the bad drivers.  Smart people practice defensive life.  Personally I am not going to go through lie exposing myself and my family to all kinds of nonsense by idiots just because I can.  If a person swims in a cesspool and comes out stinking, yes the stink came from the cesspool -  but the swimming came from the person.  Granted it would be nice if the cesspool smelled better, but it doesn't.  And THAT should inform the decision of whether or not to swim.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I can get wishing the wife an Anniversary. Though on facebook you kinda get the whole conglomeration of friends, family and for some alot of people they never met. I can see maybe if they are celebrating a 50th year, that might be something nice for the family to know as well. In that regard friends and others are just collateral on that.

With Curt, he's was a baseball player and his daughter is a softball player. To me it wasn't like he was wishing her a happy birthday. They share a very common bond with two sports that are basically equivalent for their own gender. To me I don't think it was too personal for him, being a very good MLB player to give praise to his daughter. I guess even that is too much for the internet.

Schilling was probably proud of his daughter and wanted to boast a bit to his friends / followers.

Social media has taken on this weird dynamic where people feel the need to proclaim their pride, love, etc for someone in their life in a public manner which places pressure on others to do the same.  I have friends that post every minor accomplishment their kids achieve or ramble on about how great their spouse is.  As a result more and more friends have adopted the practice so it's now to the point if you're not boasting about your kid / spouse on FB or Twitter your they are either losers or you're an uncaring parent / spouse.

I don't really get it, but it's easier to ignore than post something inflammatory as the individuals did to Schilling.

I don't do twitter and one of the reasons is that it is a cesspool of trolls. I get what Schilling did and he should be able to express pride in his daughter, but he has been kind of a polarizing guy (speaking as a Phillies fan) and should probably expect the trolls to come out. That said, I think it is great how he handled it. People have to learn that when they hit "send" it is out there forever and should be held accountable.

I recently read an interview with the CEO of Twitter in the NYT and he said "We suck at dealing with abuse." He wants to get more aggressive about dealing with cyber bullying and abuse. It was a short interview and it didn't get into details about how that would be done but at least they are thinking about it.

So you can't congratulate your daughter in a semi-public way? That invites the crazies?

C'mon, Rich, I see your point… but I think you're too far to the one side of the middle here. This isn't airing something terribly private publicly… it's saying "congrats to my daughter for her achievement." Articles about it might be written in an online newspaper or something, too, and that's public as well.

I don't condone any of the vile responses that resulted from Curt's initial Tweet.  Here's the REAL problem:

He tweeted the message to the WORLD on a global platform to be seen by anyone with a phone or computer with an internet connection.

A simple AND PRIVATE message to his daughter on the subject and this is a non-news story.

When are people going to realize that when you put stuff out to everyone on the planet bad thing can and DO happen?

Personal rant: Social media outlets like Twitter, Face Book and Instagram, (just a few) are merely platforms people use to draw attention to themselves for selfish reasons.  Constantly posting to these sites opens the door to personal attacks and backlash beyond what anyone expects.  Honestly, I hope ALL social media runs its course and ceases to exist.  And soon.  It won't, but I can only hope.

Umm, I think Curt was 100% sure he was making a public statement about his daughter. I don't get why people assume he was considering this a private matter. Curt pitched for Boston, a HUGE baseball market. He knows about publicity and being in the public eye.

Again it isn't Curt's problem. It is these Idiots who think they can hid behind their computers with their hate and trash people. It is absurd. You have right to free speech, but there should be consequences to saying things. There should be a way for the victims to go after these people in some sort of legal way.

I know people will yell and cry about freedom of speech, the internet needs to be free of all regulation. To me this type of stuff is getting way out of control.

No, the problem isn't that he chose a public forum to congratulate his daughter. He's a former MLB player, his daughter committed to a softball team and he wanted to share it with his followers and fans, etc. The problem lies in people who think that a small amount of anonymity gives them the right to say and do stupid things.

    • Still working on the backswing a bit. Hand still gets away from the body, out towards the ball, and at A2 the club wants to roll over and get flat at A3. It's just very difficult to shallow from that position like I want. Which makes my downswing work impossible.  Backswing I have been playing around with the left leg straightening to start the backswing. It's like, a slight shove of the hips right with the left leg. Then just keep the flex in the right knee as I turn into it. I kind of like it. I never had a good swing trigger. It helps keep my left knee extended.  Yea, definitely feeling the hand path is traveling down the feet line, and straight up. A little bit of wrist rotation, and a lot more hinge sooner in the right wrist and elbow. I am trying to get the feeling that the arm hinging up then is the cause for the right shoulder to retract to finish the backswing. Club feels much more vertical at A3. I am trying to have my wrist fully hinged by then.  Feel the club and arms stop at A3.5 (my A4). If my arm collapses late, then I turn into that and I am pretty much screwed. The club and arms kind of have a floaty feeling, where they are just suspended in air for a bit, then drop.  Downswing I have been trying to think of a good visual for this mentally. I like the idea of my hands taking a wide arc to my right pocket, or I am taking the back of the hosel and trying to hit the ground behind my right foot.    Left knee stuff, just sooner.
    • Day 78 - 2026-03-10 Backswing work at the net with foam balls, a few real ball swings.
    • Day 525 - 2026-03-10 Got some work in before lessons today (was going to play after but it decided to POUR). Then like three minutes in later on.
    • Day 2 (10 Mar 26) - Worked on weight shift feel using slap stick drill (hands about 6” apart - coming back weight on trail foot - down - thru weight on lead foot….moved it to hitting chips w/9i playing what I call “leap frog” - hit 1st about 10yds, the next a couple past the 1st, for about 6 balls total.  Love it as the lies change, the distances vary making each swing slightly different.
    • The first post is here:   Do you have an overly long backswing that ruins sequencing and leads to poor shots? In nearly 20 years of teaching, I've found 5 common faults. You don't have to swing like Jon Rahm, but a shorter swing will probably help you #PlayBetter golf. Which is your fatal flaw? #1 - Trail Elbow Bend Average golfers ♥️ bending their trail elbows. It can feel powerful! Tour players bend their trail elbows MUCH less. A wider trail elbow creates a longer hand path and preserves structure. It also forces more chest turn; not everything longer is bad! Overly bending your trail elbow can wreak havoc on your swing. It pulls your arms across/beside your body. It requires more time to get the elbow bend "out," ruining your sequencing. The lead arm often bends and low point control is destroyed. The misconception is that it will create more speed, but that's often the opposite of what happens. Golfers often feel they swing "easier" but FASTER with wider trail elbows. Want to play better golf with a shorter backswing? Don't bend your elbow so much. #2 - Hip (Pelvis) Turn I see this all the time: a golfer's hips are only 5-10° open at impact, but he turns them back 60°+ in the backswing. Unless your father is The Flash, your hips are probably not getting 40° open at impact from there! That's more rotation than Rory! Golfers who over-rotate their pelvis often over-turn everything - trail thigh/knee, chest/shoulders, etc. They have more work to do in the same ~0.3 seconds as a Tour player who turns back ~40° and turns through to impact 40° or so. Want to shorten the pelvis turn a bit? Learn to internally rotate into the trail hip, externally rotate away from the lead hip, and do "less" with your knees (extending and flexing) in the backswing. Learn some separation between chest and pelvis. #3 - Rolled Inside and Lifted Up Amateurs love to send the club (and their arms) around them. You see the red golfer here all the time at your local range. The problem? Your arms mostly take the club UP, not around. Going around creates no height until you have to hoist the club up in the air because you're halfway through your backswing and the club is waist high and three feet behind your butt! 😄  Learn to use your arms properly. Arms = up/down, body = around. Most golfers learn how little their arms really have to do in the backswing. The picture here is all you've gotta do (but maybe with a properly sized club!). #4 - Wide Takeaway Width is good, no? Yes, if you're wide at the right time and in the right spots. Golfers seeking width often don't hinge the club much early in the backswing… forcing them to hinge it late. Hinging the club late puts a lot of momentum into the club, wrists, and elbow just before we need to make a hairpin turn in transition and go the other direction at the start of the downswing. When you're driving into a hairpin curve, you go into it slowly and accelerate out of it. Waiting to hinge is like coasting down the straightaway and accelerating into the hairpin. Your car ends up off the road, and your golf ball off the course. Give hinging at a faster rate (earlier) then coasting to the top a try. You'll be able to accelerate out of the hairpin without the momentum of the arms and club pulling in the wrong direction.   #5 - Sway and Tilt Some sway is good but sometimes I see a golfer who just… keeps… swaying… Their chest leans forward a bit for balance, resulting in a whole lotta lean. The green line below is the GEARS "virtual spine." Pros sway a bit, but stay ~90°. This sway often combines with the extra pelvis turn because this golfer is not putting ANY limits on what the "middle of them" (their pelvis) is doing in the backswing. These golfers spend a lot of energy just to get back to neutral! The best players begin pushing forward EARLY in the backswing. Often before the club gets much past their trail foot! Pushing forward (softly) first stops your backward sway and then begins to get your body moving toward the target. Push softly, but early!
