66 worst ball is crazy, crazy good.

Quote:

According to Rosaforte, Tiger shot a "worst-ball 66" at his hometown Medalist Golf Club in Florida. Because it was worst ball format — where he played two different balls and took the worst shot in each situation — Rosaforte says it was arguably more impressive than the course-record 62 he shot in 2011.

If you're one to get overexcited about "Tiger Woods Is Back" anecdotes, prepare yourself. Here's how Rosaforte described it :

"The best example of the progress Tiger made over the last two-to-three weeks is the worst-ball 66 he shot at Medalist Golf Club. That's where he takes the worst of two drives, the worst of the two approach shots, the putt that's either furthest away from the hole or the chip that's furthest away from the hole. And then if he makes birdie he has to validate. So if he makes a 10-footer for birdie he has to make another 10-footer for birdie. To go around that golf course, shoot six under in those conditions where you can't hide, obviously, you can't hide a weakness, and you think about the course record he shot there — 62 in 2011 — this round could conceivably be considered better."

Sounds pretty good!

Well, at least Tiger's team is doing a great job of keeping expectations nice and low, haha.

Wow impressive. Surely he played well around the greens to get that done. Be curious to see his stats for the round.

This. If it's true, it's absurd. Not impressive, not really really good, but absurd. Medallist is considered a tough course right?

From the championship tees it has a course rating of 76.2 with a Slope of 151. Not sure if those are available year round. The typical back tees is a course rating of 74 with a slope of 146.

74 with a 146 is a pretty stout test.

When he steps on the first tee at the Masters, what happens while the gitters are shooting through his body will be the real test.

That said, the worst ball 66 is incredibly insane.  My boss has played that golf course and he said it was a stern test (and he's played almost all the top 100 courses in the world).

I wonder if I could shoot 66 on worst ball for nine holes at my home course. I'm so glad to see Tiger can do it for 18 at his.

It's not. It was reported by Tim Rosaforte a couple days ago.

I know it's his home course, But a worse ball score of 66 is pretty hard to do if you are off your game. Like most are saying , unless he is injured he's playing. If he comes out and says he's healthy but isn't confident to Play, he's done

Doing it at The Medalist for fun and doing at The Masters for a green jacket are two totally different things.

As much as I swing from Tiger's jock and I want him to do well and obliterate the competition, you are correct. Tiger has had notorious first hole jitters. Huge blocks, snap hooks, pull hooks, double crosses....the first hole is tough for everyone.

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
    • Yes. I believe in using the same ball all of the time, including chipping and putting practice. I use the orange Callaway Supersoft.  Only $25 per dozen, and sometimes on sale for $20.
    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
