I mean, we have to remember that Spieth himself got a bit tight on 17.  Awful tee shot and missed a short bogey putt.  It's just always more memorable on the 18th. But look at what Spieth has done here.  It's pretty incredible.  Could be him and Rory in a 10+ year battle.

Yeah, granted Spieth had an easier eagle putt than DJ but Spieth played it smart and went for it but made sure to leave himself a tap in birdie. DJ's eagle putt was a wtf is he's doing moment. He saw how far Day's putt went past the hole just a few minutes earlier

Maybe DJ should look into AimPoint. 3 putting from 12'4" is a brutal way to lose a major.

From 12', on 3% slope, I have a 35 inch read. Not sure if that was a 4% slope on that putt. His ball was able to sit there on that slope, I doubt it was in the 4%+ range.

Spieth > McIlroy ?

Exciting final 9 holes overall, but sad to see anyone 3 putt from 12 feet to lose. DJ will have a tough time getting over this one. Probably won't.

People were saying that golf was dying because of Tiger Woods poor play.  After what we saw tonight, a lot of people are going to be saying Tiger who?

Tiger who. Your a funny guy. But things are very exciting in the world of goLF no doubt.

4 total for Spieth.

Agree. But Jordan is the best putter in the world. I might not be surprised if Spieth passes Rory.

Awe He has to be shock. He just seemed to "so what" afterwards. It will hit him at some point.

Watching DJ three-putt that was almost as brutal as Fox's coverage of the whole tournament

Correct. But we may actually see a true rivalry develop with these two. Would be good for the game with Tiger fading from the picture.

Spieth has four total PGA tour wins.  And McIlroy is five years older.

I'm not ready to put Spieth ahead of him, but I'd say they're equals right now.  Obviously Rory has something that Spieth never will, and that's a power game.

It will probably hit DJ when he wakes up tomorrow.

AND WOW did I just hear a fan say, "You got lucky he missed the putt???"

I think you are ignoring the fact that Rory has played a few more years and events, though between them they have won the last 4 majors.

The tour needs this rivalry to develop, it adds to the fans excitement and will create a natural PGA tour vs Euro tour rivalry which isn't a bad thing.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
