Hello TST!

Exciting stuff happening with the site.

Sometime in the next several months, The Sand Trap .com is moving from Huddler to what is likely going to end up being our own server using what is probably going to be either InvisionPower or Xenforo forum software. This will involve a costly expense (we need to find a developer who is familiar with PostgreSQL and IPB 4 or XF to convert the site from Huddler to IPB)

@iacas and I will be offering two membership perks to help fund this move:

  • Lifetime Supporter Status - $299
  • Elite Supporter Status - $499

Now, yes, that's a lot of money for what is otherwise a free website. But of course, nobody has to pay. It's voluntary, but it would mean so much to us, and we think and hope that many of you feel that you've benefitted from the site enough to consider it.

What will you get for it?

Lifetime Supporters will get lifetime "Supporter" status, and all the perks that come with it. We aren't entirely certain what features we'll be able to have or offer on the new forum, but they include the ability to have your own blogs and increase PM storage and other things. Plus we'll offer what we currently offer , as much as we can: preferred access to the Member Review program, which alone can make this worth while (members this year have gotten full sets of PING irons, wedges, drivers, etc.). If you're active with Member Reviews the Supporter status can "pay for itself" quickly.

Elite Supporters will get all of the stuff Lifetime Supporters get, PLUS premium access to the Member Review program - you'll be given the first chance to choose items you want to review.

That's about all we can say for sure, but that's only because we don't want to make promises we can't keep. There's some unknown stuff here, like what features we can offer, but we have big plans and will always look to take care of our friends and supporters. We enjoy making our members happy :-)

Please consider donating and thank you for reading this and being a Supporter or Forum Leader right now. We appreciate each and every one of you.

To donate send the $299 or $499 to paypal@thesandtrap.com . Please use the "Send money to friends and family" option and in the notes include your username.

Oh good. After reading Erik's post, my first thought was to ask if I could help, but as some of you know, I am not good with computers, so offering to help on the tech side of the transition probably wouldn't be the right way to go. This is a good way I can help out. Also... am I reading this right that an Elite supporter might be able to review a set of irons, just like board staff can?

A couple Supporters, reviewed the PING G30 irons this year. Elite would get first chance at the opportunity.

Oh, you know I'm in.

The quantity of free crap (well not "technically" free - the cost is writing a review) I've already received just for my Supporter Status is several hundreds of dollars higher than what an Elite membership will cost.  (And that doesn't even count the "priceless" stuff that isn't really quantifiable - like a tour of the Callaway fitting center, as one example.)

Well, if it wasn't a done deal already, that seals it. I'll be an Elite Supporter when it's available.

We'd like to thank the many members who have already chosen to support us as we transition the site with a Lifetime or Elite Supporter membership.

We will look to make this not only a rewarding benefit but one that is in the end a wise financial decision for you as well! :)

Memberships are now being taken, and we'll likely close these up at the end of July at the latest .

Glad I could help! I appreciate all the time and effort you and Mike put into this forum in making it a great place for golfers and non-golfers to interact.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
