Some say any publicity is good publicity because it gets your brand out to the public and gets people talking.

Agree with you, it is ineffective if the publicity causes people to avoid your product. Experience tells us that -- tylenol scare, Blue Bell, etc. can doom your brand for a period of time or permanently.

The question to ask is whether the Dino commercials spread the brand name and do they cause people to not use the golfnow product. Will people still use golfnow if it gives them a deal on a tee time?

I really dislike these commercials as well. They make me feel very uncomfortable when the guy morphs into Dino-mode. I dunno what it is. I need to change the channel immediately when they come on, even if I'm not even really watching TV and am just letting Golf Channel run in the background while I'm doing other stuff.

I guess they are having the desired effect by drawing attention to "golf now" but I really hate that stupid ad and hit the fast forward button at every opportunity. The guy in the ad looks like such an idiot. I especially dislike it when all the pictures fall off the wall. Can you imagine bellowing like that in the house or at work.

They serve their purpose by causing people to remember their product. Very irritating on the otherhand i love the geico commercials.. especially the new one.. Teddy Brosoovelt.   lol

Not designed for repeated views. I'll take the at least varied 'already over' Geico commercials or some of the 'Progressive girl' ads over the dinosaur bits any day.

But they don't run the attack ads on themselves.

That's funny.

The whole "any publicity is good publicity" does not apply to stuff like this. It rarely applies, really. Anything with "-gate" like Apple's "antenna-gate" was not good publicity.

I don't know.  The commercial is silly (I say it singular because they seem to only show the guy at home who seems more Velociraptor and not the guy at work who was a brachiosaurus or something) but it doesn't really bother me any more than all of the other commercials that they repeat all of the time.  In fact, there are actually a couple of positives I take from it:

  1. That guy is really impressive as a dinosaur.  How does he make such a realistic sound?
  2. In the longer version with the wife, I am in awe of the fact that he is able to move his face so quickly against hers without headbutting her and without her flinching even one iota.  I would love to see some of the outtakes from that scene.  No way they got that on the first try.

Yes, the Geico commercial with the whispering golf announcers is fun, where the giant octopus interrupts the golf tournament... " I believe he's got a 9-iron, I don't think that's going to be enough club".... I think it's funny... My golf buddy thinks it's stupid (shrug). But I hate the dinosaur commercials. But then, Geico always had some of the most creative ads over the years with a huge advertising budget.

I used to think they were tolerable, but now they are tired.  I imagine a bunch of idiots at the advertising company in a room trying to think up stupid dinosaur stuff.

I actually haven't seen them lately.  Maybe they realized they were stupid, or I've successfully blocked them from my consciousness.  That's handy.  I do that with my wife all the time.
