Either an extremely fortunate shutter click, or some okay Photoshop work.  Likely shot with a phone with about a 2 second shutter lag (which is why catching a bolt of lightning is a bit of a miracle), or maybe a frame cut out of a video sequence, which is probably the likeliest scenario.

I've played in snow, hail, and pouring rain, but lightning is another matter. The game isn't worth dying for people, so just go wait out the storm!

On the subject of the picture, I'm going to guess photoshop. The player and the bushes immediately in front of the lightning bolt have good lighting and clarity, whereas a picture (or video frame) taken by a phone with lightning in the background would look much more washed out than that. Phone cameras, at least to the best of my knowledge, are incapable of adjusting fast enough in response to a flash of lightning to produce a picture of this quality in that situation.

Lightning is a serious matter. If there are thunderstorms in the area, I'm done. Seriously, they will call a lightning delay for an hour in NCAA tournaments if the sun is shining and there is a report of lightning within 10 miles.

Last year we had thunderstorms in the area - you could hear the thunder, light rain, and no siren. I've lived in Texas. I hear that I'm done. I guess that makes me a "fair weather" golfer. Course gave me a rain check, though.

I get it that it's not good to play when you see lightning but statistically he will win the lottery before he gets hit by it. I wouldn't be that concerned if I saw some in the distance and wanted to finish my last few holes. I tend to do "risky" things if I feel the odds are significantly in my favor.

The thing is, people do win the lottery and do get hit by lightning. Life's too short as it is.

Just saying I will do it within reason. Those clouds in that pic would probably have me deciding to pack it in but I live in FL and can't go leaving the range or course every time there is some lightning bolt 10-15 miles away or I won't get anything done till the end of October.

That would be true if he just happened to be walking around in a thunderstorm. Waving a large conductive rod in the air makes those odds against it not as great as they would be otherwise.

Don't mess with lightening....I get it.  If you can see or hear it, you can be struck by it.

With that said, the pic can be real.   We've all been there........ distant lightening and rumbles and we hope it passes.  Then BAM!  A close one hits and scares the crap out of everyone.  The above could have been that very strike!   I've been close enough the bolt had "width" and left a physical vapor/smoke trail behind.  We could hear the "SIZZLE"..... time to GTFO the course!  For sure!

I knew 3 people who got killed by lightning and I saw another. I was on a balcony one night in Daytona when a bolt came out of a not particularly menacing sky. Normal for Florida. A couple was walking down the beach a few hundred yards to my right. I saw the bolt out of the corner of my eye. Then I saw the couple on the sand with people starting to gather around. The word came back that his head was blown off. You know how rumors are. Maybe, maybe not, but he was still dead. I've been close enough to a couple of lightning bolts to have felt the ants on the skin and the compression waves of the lightning. I think one bolt may have hit the concession stand I was under at one golf course. The bolt and thunder were at the same time. And loud!

I'm going with fake. It actually looks like part of the the lightning is in front of the bush right near the guy. Just doesn't look right. I got a picture of a lightning bolt once, I had to use my slow motion video setting and then went frame by frame to get something like that ;)

Yea, it looks like the lightning bolt is pasted on top of the bush.

Good catch.  With the majority of the scene that dark and the lightning so bright, it's doubtful that a camera would have the dynamic range to properly expose both.

I was playing a course in NJ two years ago with a few buddies when a thunderstorm rolled in out of nowhere.  The rain and hail were coming down really heavy and since we were on the 14th hole (a far ride back to the clubhouse) so we decided to park the carts under a bunch of trees.  We saw a bright flash and the sound was deafening.  Lightning had struck a tree about 100 feet from where we were, split it in two.  It scared the crap out of all of us but fortunately the storm passed quickly and we got back to the clubhouse.

These days If I see lightning in the distance or hear thunder I start to head back to the clubhouse rather than wait for the horn to blow.
