What'd You Shoot Today?

Recommended Posts

Strange day. I started the day just with my putter, and spending time on the practice green. While having breakfast at the 19th, an old buddy showed up and asked if I wanted to join him for a round. His scheduled partner cancelled.

Since I only had my putter, I rented a set of clubs (Topflites), bought a couple of sleeves of PV-1s, and we took off.

Long story short, with 28 putts, I managed a nice 84. Most of my poor shots came with the metal woods off the tees. The irons from 5 - SW, I played pretty well with.

My last round of 2016. Next Tuesday, I will start the first of 100+ rounds in the next 10 months. I will be a member of "Golf Junkie Anonymous" in search of a single digit hndcp. :~(

Not long but tougher than you wold think for the distance.  Now it was windy, narrow fairways, small greens and water on 14 holes,  need to play again to figure out the course.  Course though was in really good shape.

Unfortunately it was 33* F when I went out to play. The forecast was for warming and some sun. Well it did not warm up and there was not any sun, but it started raining on the 3rd hole. I did not have on rain gear and by the 6th hole my partner said to me let's call it a day. So we only got 6 holes in I was +1 at the time but freezing my butt off.

Yesterday I recieved an early morning call to go golfing with an old friend. I don't usually golf on Saturdays due to the weekend warriors being out. However he's good friend and a decent golfer, so it was a no brainer. I shot a 78 from the 6500 tees. 12 pars, with 6 bogies. Putted lights out with 28. Didn't really hit anything bad. Used my 7 wood quite a bit. Just had a good round, and earned a free ham and egg breakfast. My partner shot an 86.  That will teach him to wake me up early on a Saturday.

So the cold season golf is officially on. Our CC (Elizabeth Manor) stays open through winter so a few good men like myself bundle up and play through the season, frost delays and all. We play lift clean and place everywhere as more than not balls pick up large amounts of wet mud. Especially around greens.

Yesterday was 44 F high but first three greens were frozen solid as the greens-keeper actually watered them to cut the frost. Anyway, ball striking was respectable but chipping around the greens in dead wet grass and putting on winter greens was down right comical as expected. Beyond that it was a good round in the sunshine.

Front nine was riddled with bunch of yipped chips, 3 putts and even a 4 putt. Back nine was straightforward as conditions were better and actually got up and down twice from bunkers.

Score: 47-39 = 86.

Also, in Virginia there is no score posting blackout so this is not going to help HCP but you take what you get. I expect to bounce around in mid 80s but will probably drop a few shots when it warms up. Just thankful that we can play at all. :-)

Played Eagle Creek again.

37-39-76 Moved back a set of tees.  2 birdies and 2 doubles only 1 3-putt today, was 2 under after 6 and then doubled 2 of next 3 (ugh). All in all a good trip to Florida.

Saturday I played my home course. Shot 86.  Did not feel comfortable over driver, but managed to scramble a bit.  Hit all par 3 greens, 1 for a kp. Played the 3 par 5's in 4 over, yuck.  Cold day we teed off at 8:45 am.  I played with 3 men's club members who are all single digit handicaps.  Definitely helps my game playing with better players.

Nothing....absolutely nothing........ice covered everything, and temps to drop to low single digits by evening and through the rest of the week.

that is all

94, which is about right for me, albeit in sub 40 degree temperatures, with lots of standing water and mud in the fairway. I was very good off the tee but struggled on second shots. I think on a nice warm & dry day w/ plenty of roll out I probably shave another 5-7 strokes. So, I think the lessons are definitely helping. A year ago in these conditions I'd have gone over 100 and maybe even 110. One thing that bothers me is, I was inexplicably very nervous for the first 6 or 7 holes. I haven't felt that way since I started playing. I hope this is not a trend.

Zip got snowed out for the second day and tomorrow looks like more to come. Thursday and Friday seem sunny but temps in the very low 30's. I think my golf is done until sometime next week hopefully.

My 9-year old and I played 18 holes last Wednesday. It was our first round in a couple months, and the weather was great for late December in Oklahoma (65 degrees, very little wind).

I shot an 84. I had a bunch of pars, but a few doubles kept the round from being a lot better. Luke shot a 110 which is one of the best rounds he's ever shot. It was probably the best he has hit the ball over and 18-hole stretch.

He got a Callaway golf net for Christmas, so we'll be hitting a lot of balls the next several years! Haha

Nong Khai Golf Club.

If you start your round with a double bogie, standing on second tee your mind seem to not be fully focused after three putts, but sometimes you can get right back in the groove and play good golf which happened on my round yesterday, finished 38 front,36 on back, 1 birdie,15 pars,1 bogie,1 double.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
