When I bought my car almost exactly a year ago, the one thing I wanted to avoid more than once was the worry that something would go wrong ... a month from now, three months from now, a year ago, etc. I didn't want to buy something 5-ish years old where I'd miss out on those first 5 years of not having to worry about it not starting in the cold, etc. My only other option besides new was about 2 years old, likely a car coming off a lease, and I couldn't find anything that was significantly less expensive than just buying new.

My wife use to dream of owning a Porsche when she was in high school.  I'm considering surprising her for Christmas.  2007 Cayman 40K miles, $25k used (new they're about 70K):

I bought a 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec in 2014. Its basically a 5 series BWM with a 450hp V8 in it. Love this car. It was $55K brand new and I got it for $32K with 9K miles on it. I plan on driving it until the 100K mile warranty is expired, since there is a lot of tech in this car and I think repairs could get expensive outside of warranty.

However, I did put 267K miles on my 06 Lincoln Zephyr before I hit a pot hole on the way to look at my Genesis. That car had another 100K miles in it with very minimal maintenance.

I am now biased towards new. For me the loss of 15-20% value as soon as you drive off the dealership doesn't mean anything since I am not going to sell it next day. Over time the value loss curve evens out to about same differential as a used car when time comes to sell it assuming it is 5+ years after. At least it is not much anymore in realm of car values these days.

Sure there are less guaranteed headaches over life of ownership but after 2 years of having bought a new car for the first time in my life, I would say don't discount the intangibles of driving one.

Been in the biz for 20+ years. Tough question to answer considering all the different personal situations.

I buy used because I buy wholesale and because I don't keep cars long. Not sure that would ring true if I didn't have access to whatever I want at dealer cost.  Knowing what I do if I was out of the biz and in the market I would buy new and lease. But it would be something like a Toyota truck where I know the silly high used prices would be significantly higher than the residual at lease end. Then I'd finance it with my credit union and be in it for less than I could buy the same thing for used.

The check won't be from "my account", it will be from "our account" (we don't have separate accounts).  So in a sense I'm spending her money too.

I don't know. If she is like other women, a car is worth one point, just like washing the dishes...:-O

A Porsche? Maybe 3 points.

They are always keeping score ...

So. . .you're saying that every time I wash the dishes 3 times I can get out of purchasing a new car or something else of value? Very cool info. . .:-D

Every woman has her own point system ... unfortunately, we are kept in the dark.

Supposedly, little things count almost as much as big things ... so forget the big things. And if it comes with a payment, she will hold it against you.

Been there...

Sure, but even a variance of +/-300% would be doing just a weeks worth of dishes versus 1 night or so. . .I like this thought!

For example, I spent an entire Saturday afternoon replacing a sink and vanity, that was about a point. Washing the dished on a Monday evening was worth 2 points. It also changes from day to day. . .

Sorry @saevel25 for going so off topic, but this is an important bit of information to assimilate and understand. . .:smartass:

Yep, funny how the system changes. I need to start a blog on all my failures with women... (OT) But the Cayman ... nice thought.

New cars are a rip off BUT have u seen what people do to cars!? Dont maintain them, all kinds of disgusting things, drive them over curbs, wreck them, falsify odometers and records. Let unqualified mechanics work on them and for all u know it belonged to a drug dealer before u. Its a tough story to sell to a cop who pulls u over.

I am a buy new and run the wheels off of them.  I am (ahem) in my early 50's and only owned 6 cars in my life!  Except for one truck that I needed to upgrade due to a boat purchase, I have kept them all at least 10 years.  Amortize the "off the lot" loss over that many years and it is irrelevant.

"There might be 80 kilos of cocaine in the spare tire" has never entered my new vs. used car analysis...until now.

    • I know you guys were discussing this like a year ago. But, ironically I just had this discussion with my brother-in-law. We literally just did one of these. I'd always used the "Slow-Cook, Rest, and Sear" Method. But my bother-in-law was convinced the "5-Min/lb, 500 degree" method was the way. So, we gave it a go. I have to say it came out great.  I have a 25 year old, electric oven, GE brand... Not sure if that matters, but it came out great. ... Of course we stressed that nobody was to open the oven.   I don't make these all that often so, I'm not sure if I can fully recommend one method or the other, because without doing a Pepsi Challenge, I'd say both ways come out great. 👍😁👍
