Milk, bread, and eggs?

Here in the Mid-Atlantic, everyone is getting ready to get hammered. DC is forecast to get 24+". Every time a snow event happens, you inevitably hear the same thing all over the media. "Everyone is buying up milk, bread, and eggs." "Stores are running out of milk, bread, and eggs."

My question is, why does snow induce everyone to start making french toast??? And why no maple syrup?

Ha ha! Don't forget the water. Everyone buys bottled water. In NYC, of all places, people panic and empty supermarkets. So silly.

I was in college in Delaware when Hurricane Sandy came through. I went to the grocery store to get some things a few days before, and the entire drinks section was cleaned out. No water, and people had nearly snapped up the soda and gatorade and everything else too.

French toast would have been a much better idea.

Never even thought of that. You can always just go outside and fill a couple pots with snow and bring it in.

My point is, what is so special about those 3 food items? Why not veggies, rice, and OJ? I have never stocked up in a panic, but if I did, I think I would go for steak, pasta, and red wine.

If we recieved 2' of snow out here, folks would be buying alcohol. That much snow would stop everything around here. 

I think it was about 40 years ago we recieved a heavy snow fall. Very few folks went to work. Any hill of any size became ski/sled area for the kids who were out school. It was a fun time.

That makes perfect sense to me. Milk and eggs are the basic ingredients for most recipes/cooking. Bread spoils, loses its freshness quickly. I guess you'd expect to hear meats, veggies, flour, pasta too.

Maybe for Boston, but I doubt Dallas would handle 2 feet of snow very well!  I lived in Cincinnati for two year. 1-2 inches closed the city down. The issue is the lack of snow removal and salting equipment.

Agree the panic is dumb. Being prepared and having the right equipment is more important. The real food you want on hand is the kind you can eat when the power is out.

The main thing I stocked up on was booze.  Got a 6 pack of beer and a bottle of scotch.  I'm at work, but the government shuts down at noon, so I'll head home then.

Not American white bread. That can last a few weeks. 

I think pre cooked foods are the best. If you have no electricity you are SOL on cooking eggs if you don't know how to cook over open flame.

i cook all the time and hardly ever use eggs or milk. I have bought milk in over a year.

Only a sixer and a fifth? If I'm going to be snowed in for more than one day, we're going 24-pack and two fifths (of bourbon). Also lots of coffee.

All very good and true points. I guess I'll have to append the word generally to my statement.

I buy whole wheat/7 grain/whatever bread straight from the bakery so those tend to get stale and hard quickly as they have fewer preservatives. Same for baguettes.

Milk is a staple in many things I cook, oatmeal, coffee, scrambled eggs, muffins, pie, pancakes, cakes, brownies, french toast, batter for fried fish, chicken, cream based soups, macaroni and cheese, etc...

Same for eggs, there's just no way I can cook w/o milk or eggs.

Heh.  I'm a light weight.  If I went through that much booze in a couple days, I'd be dead.  Also COFFEE!!!  Forgot about that.  Gotta go pick some up on the way home.

Did everyone forget toilet paper? In northern Virginia, the stores sell out of toilet paper too, as if we're all going to be snowed in for a month or more. Of course, it's much more amusing to be watching this all from sunny Palm Springs

There's snow in the general Palm Springs area.  Or at least visible from it.  You should take a picture of it to show your friends back east

I used to live in Virginia, if those poor people get 24" they will need a lot of bread, milk and eggs.  Hopefully it's improved since 12 years ago but if it hasn't people won't get out of their neighborhoods for at least 4 days in some of the more remote areas.
