During the broadcast this weekend Johnny Miller described a shot that, I think was one of Bello's, a "money shot." It just seems to me that it is possibly poor taste to use this in this setting. I doesn't bother me but it seems strange to use it here.

It's a legit expression.  Just because some of us might be more inclined to know and associate it's Urban Dictionary definition doesn't mean that's what most people think.:-P

Agreed...it's a pretty common expression. I'm guessing a majority of the audience would know exactly what he meant.

I probably would have chuckled, of course, because I have the sense of humor of a 14-year-old sometimes.

Right, same here. :P

Yeah, he said a funny one. Could have been worse. Typical Miller. He's used that before.

I'm fairly positive the phrase didn't originate in the porn industry.

Quote

money shot is a moving or stationary visual element of a filmvideotelevision broadcast, or print publication that is disproportionately expensive to produce and/or is perceived as essential to the overall importance or revenue-generating potential of the work.[citation needed]

Cinema[edit]

Originally, in general film-making usage, the "money shot" was simply the scene that cost the most money to produce.[1] In general, a money shot (also called a money-making shot[2]) is a provocative, sensational, or memorable sequence in a film, on which the film's commercial performance is perceived to depend.[3] The scene may or may not be a special-effects sequence, but may be counted on to become a selling point for the film.

I've heard it used in broadcast journalism, etc. too.

It may not have been from the porn industry but it has the most notoriety...I think... Maybe I am wrong though.

I was in the kitchen when I heard him say it. I chuckled but didn't see the shot he was referring to. My guess it was either referring to a shot that was good for the sponsors (Tiger's ball hanging on the edge of the cup for a second, with the logo facing up, before falling into the cup) or a shot that advanced the player up the leaderboard (ie. more money)?

It was something along the lines of where he could have played safe but made the shot to place better.

I've heard it used more often outside of the porn industry but like others I did chuckle to myself (thinking of Beavis and Butthead) when I heard Miller say it.
