I've got the old NBC theme going in my head, but alas, it's Fox, with its updated announcing lineup in its sophomore year. The US Open is my favorite major of the year, and it's at the venerable Oakmont CC. an added bonus, with its church pews bunkers in the great state of Pennsylvania.

TV Schedule:

  Quote

June 16: First Round, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on FS1, 5-8 p.m. on FOX

June 17: Second Round, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on FS1, 5-8 p.m. on FOX

June 18: Third Round, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., FOX

June 19: Final Round, 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m., FOX

June 20: Playoff (if necessary), 12-4 p.m., FOX

Will be interesting to see how they set the course up. I don't think they will set it up as brutal as 2007. Of course, weather will play a factor in that. But early word is they're not gonna make the rough off the fairway not as penal as they did that year.

They say the USGA has to slow down the greens at Oakmont to make them playable in tournament conditions. If lighter rough convinces players that they aim for the green and their approaches will hold, the scores may well be higher than they were in '07.

Oakmont has quite possibly the most decorated winners' list of any course.  The eight US Opens and three PGAs contested on the course were won by Nicklaus, Hogan, Sarazen, Snead, Els, Cabrera, Armour, Miller, (Larry) Nelson, Mahaffey and Sam Parks.  All but the last two guys were multiple major winners and, obviously, some of the biggest legends ever won here.

So by that logic, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that one of the top guys (Day, Spieth or McIlroy) wins the Open.

Some swings by Jordan Spieth during his practice round at Oakmont.

Hole out from greenside.

I'm hoping the course plays tough. I wouldn't mind 3 to 4 over par being the winning score. :-D

I would like to see that as well. US Open winner at even par is a success in my opinion.

Does anybody know if it's too late to sign up?

In all seriousness . . this is my favorite of all the majors.  It's the highlight of my golf-watching year.  I'm hoping for a Jordan Spieth victory - after what happened at The Masters this year - that would really be amazing.  Failing that - I'd like to see Rory take it.  These 2 have become my favorite golfers lately.

There's a qualifier ten minutes away tomorrow.

Unfortunately it's a working day.

On the strength of seven birdies, Sadlowski shot a five-under 65 and won the U.S. Open local qualifier at The Country Club at DC Ranch in Scottsdale. The native of Alberta, Canada, a two-time winner of the Re/Max Long Drive Championship, is making his first attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open, which this year is being held at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club.

“People figure you hit it a long way you ought to be able to shoot low, but you still have to get it in the hole, and I did that pretty well," Sadlowski, 27, said by phone. “It’s nice to be able to prove that I can do more than hit the ball far.”

So far the course is dry and fast. Word is the course is set up for an over par winner. The next 10 days look dry for the most part there as well. May be some rain once the tourney starts, but that's still a bit far out to forecast. But the USGA has to like what it sees from a "tough" standpoint. The drier it is, the more the USGA can dictate the scoring.

    • This is my second year playing golf, I started last season but have always struggled with a slice. I've tried multiple things to try and fix the slice: Closing the face. Rotating my right hand out or clockwise in the grip. Keeping the club head low in my back swing. Focusing on a straight swing path. Trying the straighter arms like Bryson D. (as seen in the videos above) Trying to not let me hips get too far ahead of my down swing. Trying to keep my shoulders down until after I've made contact with the ball. Etc. I recently changed to the straighter arms which has helped me adjust away from such a drastic slice. So it has helped a bit. Before that, I was trying to keep the club head low in the back swing and this was the most helpful in correcting the slice, however it drastically removed power and distance in the strikes and would even sometimes result in a hook. About a couple months ago I had a single lesson with my driver and learned some helpful things, but have since struggled to perform what I learned well. One of the things in the lesson was to keep my shoulder down more in the the down swing until after making contact with the ball. This would help the slice a bit, sometimes drawing the ball. To even it out, I was instructed to rotate my hips a bit earlier in the down swing. What I have noticed however with the earlier hip rotation is that it's really hurting my lower back a lot. Since backing off on that it's helped not injure my low back as much. I believe my main issue might possibly be the swing path, being a Pull Slice.   See above, was mid typing when you posted. I have never watched Moe Norman's swing to be honest. I have never measure my hip rotation, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on that after you read about my hip rotation / back pain issue.
